Several months ago, Andy gave an interview talking about the cast; and Don inparticular, Stating that he and Don were so close as friends but could never tell one another how they felt. But he said through tears that when he spoke to him in the last days before he passed in 2006; that what he was most proud of was that they both told one another just how much they loved one another. There will never be anyone alse like them.

This show was and is proof that a significant percentage of Americans LOVE good, clean humor. It shows that a good percentage of Americans want a simpler and less harsh view of life. Why does TV just ignore this market today? What do we have that compare with Andy Griffith, Hogan's Heroes or some of the variety shows they used to run? Nothing. That's what. Most of these reality TV shows are garbage.

Bullseye on your comment! You're so right. I enjoyed those shows so much growing up back then. Andy Griffith, Gomer Pyle, Hogan's Heroes, Gilligan's Island, F-Troop, The Munsters, Patty Duke, and on the quality drama side: Bonanza, Gunsmoke, Star Trek, Dragnet, Daniel Boone, and Hawaii 5-0 to name a few. We had major societal issues during the 60s and 70s, but TV was still decent enough that adults and kids alike had good shows to watch.

Don Knotts may have been the greatest comedic actor in the sixties. I didn't really care for the Three's Company Don Knotts but as Barney Fife, he was the best. RIP Don!!
@luvagoodsongyeah
@luvagoodsongyeah 8 лет назад
+brugglesby Not arguing with you, but gee we were blessed with some great comedians in that era. There was the likes of Jackie Gleason, Red Skelton, Jack Benny, Bob Hope, George Burns, Milton Berle, Flip Wilson and I have probably have neglected to mention a half a dozen others. This was an era of pure comedy, where they depended on funny lines not distasteful language etc. If only the world could go back to those days, what a world it would be again, but sadly that has gone forever
@brugglesby
@brugglesby 8 лет назад
john crane Thank you John. I would never take your comment as an argument. You bring up some very fine actors, Jackie Gleason is also a favorite of mine, but I guess my point was he was just so damn good as Barney Fife that it was hard to picture him as somebody else.
@skibbers55
@skibbers55 8 лет назад
Don Knotts was not just a comic, he was an actor who made you believe he was who he was playing. When you watched the show you saw Barney Fife, not an actor saying lines. There were great comics back then, such as Bob Hope and Jackie Gleason, Red Skelton, but they did not have the acting ability that Don Knotts did. IMO.

Every time I hear the whistling theme of "The Andy Griffith Show" it reminds me of my family in the early 60s when I was in elementary school. "The Andy Griffith Show" was the one show that the whole family watched. My dad would laugh so hard at Don Knotts he would lose it. I remember sometimes he would still be laughing at the breakfast table the next morning.

It's too bad shows won't be more like this anymore...nice clean fun, hopeful and decent!...isn't tv for entertaining., even for relaxing ?, now it's all about politics, it's dirty, and people are always trying to "stand" for something when those are the ones that will fall for anything. Anytime they do put something on that's worth a hoot someone finds a way to cry about something to get it off the air. Most people are decent and want to see goodness don't let the media fool you!!

In fact one of my favourite shows ever was Matlock (and still watch repeats over and over) where Andy was a brilliant lawyer. Don put in a couple of mad appearances from time to time, which were quite funny. You could tell they were very good friends as they interacted more like brothers with their body language. Man, ain't that the truth? Today's TV is pure trash! Its not simply coincidence either! its all part of the agenda to dumb down our children, to make them mindless zombies, who cant see no difference between good and bad OR right and wrong. It trickles down from the propaganda news, to the filth they choose to do reality shows on, down to the Disney channel pushing homosexuality(in subtle ways, of course), to TBS who has filled their episodes with Illuminati symbols. I use to love watching the Andy Griffith show! the Flinstones, Sanford and Son, Beverly Hillbillies, Happy Days, and all the other wholesome programming of the 70's and 80's era.

My paternal grandmother was born in "Mayberry," NC (actually Mt. Airy, NC) and I've been privileged to join in several family reunions there, attend one funeral and make notes about family buried in Mt. Airy, NC. Those are fine folks who created quite a legacy!

I agree but lets not forget how good Andy Griffin really was. In the 70's I saw him in a TV movie (I think) where he played an evil sheriff; very chilling performance.

Lockemeister That guy is so underrated as an actor it is almost a shame he did The Andy Griffith Show. I say almost because it is a show I appreciate more and more as I get older and TV gets crappier and crappier.

Elijah James You ain't kidding brother! when I was a kid in the 60's, we had 6 channels to watch over the air. That's it, 6 channels. There was ALWAYS something good on TV to watch on one of the stations. Sometimes, good shows on 2 channels so we had to switch back and forth to catch some of each show. VCR's were not invented for home use yet. No remote control either (on the black and white TV we had), so we got up each time and turned the tuner during the commercial. Now 300 channels of (virtually) nothing. a true wasteland.
@elijahjames8837

Lockemeister Well you spoiled rotten kid where we lived in Northern Alberta we had only two channels CBC and CTV. lol I remember watching a football game where it was snowing at the game and so much snow on the reception that you literally couldn't see anything. And yet you are right in spite of all that it did seem better and way more fun. I remember waiting all week for me and my brothers favorite cartoon show Looney Tunes. We would sit there with holding our breath waiting for the intro to start. I remember sometimes we'd get up and march right along to the intro. Now you just go to the 24 hours a day Looney Tunes channel; not the same. One thing I don't miss is the god awful test patterns and their single tone that was so annoying.

It is the only black and white show that I show my grandkids. If you want to know how to raise children watch two episodes. "Mr. Mcbevee" and "Opie the bird man". Everything you need to know about relationships are in those two episodes.

OMG, so true, especially Mr. Mc beevee, lil opie, was soo sad his Pa didn't believe him, and sometimes is parents , we do the same, we need to believe in them, They do tell the truth on occasion 😀

And when opie lied about the bird, all Pa did was make him listen to the baby bird crying for his mama, (I'm crying thinking about that episode)

Growing up in the latter 1970's, I always wanted to watch the Andy Griffith show with my dad on some cable channel that played the black & white & early color shows, Don Knott's Barney Fife was the BEST Character to me! I'm SO Glad Jim Nabors "Gomer Pyle" going to his own show > "Gomer Plye U.S.M.C" was Favorite show to watch... Frank Sutton's Sgt. Carter made the show GREAT !!! Don't think the Entertainment Company Channels could ever make this kind of show again.... Sad, but True...

The “Good Old Days” are truly gone… And I don’t mean that just metaphorically. This is not just melancholia! This is the cold, cruel reality! Banks and huge Corporations are taking over! The Constitution and The Bill Of Rights are vanishing. The best day was yesterday in America!

Has anyone ever noticed how Andy's personality changed throughout the show. When it first started he was more like the clown from No Time For Seagants, but a a couple of years later he was more poised, wise, and mature.
@travisdial1730

RubberWilbur I’ve read articles and seen interviews where Andy said early on he knew he had to be the straight man and let Barney be the “goof ball” type character. It was definitely the right choice.
@PO-pi5su

Andy says (said) it was deliberate. He recognized after the first season that the cast was a Murderer's Row of comedic talent and he needed to be the straight man, because he was in every scene and Andy Taylor had to be consistent.
@zyxmyk

he said he figured out barney was the comedian and he was the straight man so he started playing it straight and reacting to barney, the comedian.
