I am travelling to Dublin from South Africa to see Paul Brady at the Vicar 15th April 2024 and can hardly wait. Maybe Paul will invite Andy along to join in in a few songs.

Everything about this is golden. Paul is so happy to be there, Donal too, and Andy is as jolly as I've seen him. How Mr. Irvine does what he does playing upside-down harp in a rack while playing those gorgeous mando runs is beyond my understanding, but bless' im for it and for that unique Andy tone in his voice. There's a touching gentleness and even lovely vibrato now in Paul's voice along with the clarion tone and power it's always had. And Donal is sitting over there out of the spotlight, but as it was when the Brady-Irvine album was recorded, he's a big part of why these songs are immortal. I posted earlier before I recognized the great Kevin Burke in there, hence this edit. 4 masterful musicians there. Thanks so much to Folky Celtic for posting this.

When I heard him in Germany he played "Băneasă’s green glade" and you could close your eyes and his voice was young and you could imagine you were in that forest back in the 60s. Magical. And the artist in his 70s on the stage. A wonderful concert in front of a small and intimate audience. Beautiful.

I saw Paul play in the US a few years ago - got a front row seat in a smallish club. He played that one (and the rest of the show) about 5 feet away from me. Unbelievable.
@speakertreatz
@speakertreatz 3 года назад
@@GlennFink he's got a lot of power as a performer, charisma that comes across more when you're close up like that. For this concert we were right up in the stands, about as far back as it gets but I'd seen Paul before right at the front, he was one of the guests at a tribute concert for the late Robbie Brennan, drummer. I was three rows away, he came out totally against type and played a storming rock n roll set - Elvis' - One Night With You, and Larry Williams - Slow Down were two I remember. My Dad said it was the kind of stuff Paul regularly played when he was in the beat group scene in Dublin, in the mid 60s. You'd be surprised what a good rock n roll and soul voice he has!

As a teenager I had a Planxty album (or rather a cassette copied from a mates’s album) and I think the Best of the Bothy Band. I recall at the time I loved the music but after 30 years in Asia I sort of forgot. The other night I listened to an interview with Karen Matheson of Capercaillie and she mentioned how much of an influence Paul Brady and Andy Irvine were. Subsequently spent hours and hours listening to these guys in the last two days. By God they were brilliant and how in retrospect I missed them. Now sharing their music with my sons., something I should have done a long while back.

@@jschofield5034 I just listened to the Andy Irvine/Planxty tune, Time will cure me," and you are right, the song is quite moving and mournful. The tune also hits home for me, as it probably does for countless others. I always hated the devastating intonation, "Can't we just be friends?" One-sided love, or love lost (the aching pain expressed in Gordon Lightfoot's heart breaking song, "If you could read my mind" fully captures the emptiness that comes when you lose love for another), but it can be harder when you are the recipient of someone losing or not having love for you. I must say, the rejection side feels worse, as it's out of your control. Thanks for the tip!
