Andy Purdy: Why the US is so concerned about Huawei | Talk To Al Jazeera

It's the world's number-one telecom gear supplier and number-two smartphone vendor after South Korea's Samsung.
Huawei's revenue grew almost 20 percent in 2018, surpassing $100bn for the first time.
But the Chinese technology company is at the centre of the trade war between China and the United States.
Huawei is blacklisted by the White House, and US President Donald Trump said: "Huawei is something that's very dangerous. You look at what they've done from a security standpoint, from a military standpoint, it's very dangerous."
Why is Huawei regarded as cybersecurity threat by the US? And is it an independent company or an arm of the Chinese government?
"Right now, we have a geopolitical war between the US and China, and as the largest privately owned company in China and active in telecommunication markets in 170 countries …. we are kind of caught in the middle," Huawei's chief security officer in the US, Andy Purdy, tells Al Jazeera.
"A number of government people have said it (the Huawei ban) is not really about the company, it's about the country, China. So, I think the fact that we are based in China raises some concerns ... The US is deeply concerned about China and the rise of China economically and militarily. And the US liked the world better when the US was still alone, as the powerhouse militarily and economically," Purdy says.
"We seem to be being used as a sort of bargaining chip in a way as part of the China-US trade talks. And we don't want to be a bargaining chip. Because the China government doesn't speak through us and we don't want to speak through the Chinese government."
On this episode of Talk to Al Jazeera, Andy Purdy, Huawei's chief security officer in the US, discusses the Huawei ban and the issues behind it.

Then it should be owned by America, since the entire success of the company was built upon theft from American/Western Corporations (just like all Chinese companies). It was only once they were large enough from this theft, that they could afford to spend a large R&D budget on 5G. That is fact.

I agree in that the global community and especially the UN has a role in standards and mediation. The problem is America has absolutely no regard for this concern. Let’s look at starting military attacks in Iraq and Syria, also using economic sanctions, also interfering in foreign politics to name a few key examples. America doesn’t care. The global community is spineless - well, except for a few nations.

There are huge double standards here by the US. It's OK for the US to interfere in large tech companies in the US (Apple, Google and others) but it's totally unacceptable if China has the slightest opportunity to do it.

Actually the 3 major US cell phone companies want to implement their own 5G network that way they can continue to charge an arm and a leg for cell phone service. Huawei's 5G would cost much less for consumers which in turn will give them a foothold into the US market. The 3 big cell phone service providers will never let that happen.

...dear Mr. Purdy, ...if Huawei, has confidence in the Canadian Justice system, as you say, I suggest that the two Canadians in affect held as hostages in China for the "Huawei Princess" should be released immediately, (at least, not held incognito, freed on bail charges having been laid). I ask, why such disruption? Indeed it is the Rule of Law, Justice seen, that Canadians are now concerned with: China's Integrity. And China has not demonstrated, a basis for this trust, frankly nor has Huawei, who in their silence, avoid the subject of "their" detention. If it is as partners, (one of the "Five Eyes" no less), Canadians defend (and promote) the credibility of Chinese enterprise, (having done so for so long), why has the Chinese Government exposed itself this way, treating Canada with Tariffs, insult, and such contempt? How does this advance their cause, for Humanity, (or their own People at home or abroad)? Are Huawei phones still sold in Canada, talk about Integrity; (...this is not "America"). This is Canada. ...like I said, partners; Rule of Law: (based on Universal Principals). From a Country and a People as great as China, this is not Leadership, or advancement.

An appeal from within China for free and fair treatment is rich beyond belief. The Chinese government doesn't even extend free and fair treatment to all of it's own citizens. And there is no doubt that the Chinese government is standing 100% behind Huawei. Without the Chinese government and the significant diplomatic pressure it has applied on it's allies and (for all practical purposes) vassal states, Huawei would have a seriously tough time now. If he wants to call that a spontaneous push back from many countries then... mkay. Also I find it hard to believe that there's a big company in China, which by the way has some involvement by the PLA in it's origin, is not at least 50% owned, or controlled (if I have to be pedantic), by the government. Huawei can write that they are independent on as many papers as they want - The moment it does not obey the government's wishes, regardless of what those wishes might be, for a moment then they can kiss any insignificant independence they have goodbye. Plus this guy is a lawyer. He knows the rules and regulations, but he can't say anything meaningful about security technology.

China has ten internet stations in Canada and the US which are part of the internet backbone. They diverted the stream of data from North America to China where data was harvested, and once harvested, they sent the data back to North America with only a brief delay. (China will not permit Canada or the US to have stations in China). The US concern with having Wuawei build out the US's 5G network is a very real and legitimate concern. The CCP can command individuals and companies to hand over information if they claim that it has anything to do with national security. In the US, the government has to go through the courts to get a warrant to demand such information. And the US courts are not beholden to the government as Chinese courts are (they have a 99% conviction rate!). Google it (You won't find this information on Baidu (which should tell you something about free access to information in China vs. the US). "China Telecom, a state-owned telecommunications firm, has systematically diverted internet traffic in Canada and the United States by shunting it through its own network in an effort to commit espionage and steal intellectual property, two cybersecurity researchers say. Yuval Shavitt of Tel Aviv University and Chris Demchak of the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, R.I., published a paper recently in Military Cyber Affairs, the journal of the Military Cyber Professionals Association, outlining how China has been rerouting Canadian and U.S. internet traffic via access points it has set up legally in North America, ostensibly to improve service for its customers. Although the Chinese government has signed no-hacking agreements with numerous Western countries, including Canada and the United States, to prohibit direct attacks on computer networks, the accords did nothing to prevent the diverting of online traffic on key Western internet infrastructure, the authors say. "China Telecom has ten strategically placed, Chinese-controlled internet ‘points of presence’ (PoPs) across the internet backbone of North America,” Prof. Shavitt and Prof. Demchak say. “Vast rewards can be reaped from the hijacking, diverting, and then copying of information-rich traffic going into or crossing the United States and Canada - often unnoticed and then delivered with only small delays.”
