And he was never the same again. Never made a slam semi since this moment. He hoped he could get back, but he knew deep down that 09 was probably his last, best chance.
@@moonshine8255 Don’t forget 2004. Roddick was serving for a 2-1 lead before the rain delay. Also had 3 break points to potentially go up 2-1 USO 06. Federer didn’t own him as much as people think
And what a classy speech wow!! Making us Americans look good. Unlike the poodle head maniac from 1980. I love John though. Guilty pleasure. Embodiment of NYC, like Donald
15yrs later and I'm listening to 'Served' - the Andy Roddick podcast - and he talks with such love of this tournament, what it still means to him and what a true champion Roger is. As a player, he was always right up there - he deserved more. And now we get to enjoy his inside line on being an elite tennis player. Check out Served with Andy Roddick. He gives us some wonderful insights into the sport...
@@samadbaksh he won a slam just not Wimbledon. He’s a champion of the sport simply because he won a slam earlier on, though I do not agree with him being elite. He was a tier blow elite when the dust settled and could never truly open that door
He will be remembered for losing to Federer in Wimbledon 2004,2005,2009 and 2006 US Open actually mostly He is best at losing major titles to Federer. If he won it He would be 5 time grandslam champion being one of the best tennis player ever born in America.
I was so gutted for Roddick although I´m a Fed fan. Roger destroyed and denied him so often, but this one should´ve gone to him. That loss ended his career.
I think we should give Roddick more credit. This match did not destroy his career - he did pretty well at AO2010, was runner up in IW, and champion in Miami. He still had some good results after this. Yes, it was his last chance to win Wimbledon, but it’s not like his career instantly plummeted.
If not for Roger, Roddick wouldn't have stopped w/ a single major. However, Roddick faced Roger in Roger's peak performance time, multiple times, and Roddick doesn't have a very good slice and doesn't have a very good volley. Tough to overcome Roger that way. Similar to how Novak has been exploiting every player's weakness these days.
Andy truly was (and is still) SUCH a gentleman. It’s easy to show good sportsmanship in victory, but Andy always impressed me deeply for showing grace and kindness in defeat. He truly was an incredible role model.
He didn't let it slip away. He lost to one of the greatest players ever. Sure there was a path to victory, but "letting it slip" makes it sound like he was careless or didn't try hard enough. No one plays every point to their 100%; Andy dropped some and so did Federer. I was a teenager, an American always cheering for Roddick, and I was so impressed with Roddick making it this far and devastated he didn't win. But I wouldn't phrase it like he let it slip away. Because I knew what it meant when Roddick faced Federer in a final, especially at Wimbledon. This was THE confrontation for a Roddick fan. Paying attention to Roddick from his first Wimbledon finals loss to Federer, I saw how much he was trying to evolve his game every year to one day beat Federer in the final, and I knew on that evening when he got to 5 sets, it would be the only chance he had at it. I have so much respect for what he went through from losing 4 sets then 3 simple sets in 2004/2005 before to finally reaching this moment in another finals after 4 years and coming so close. What a competitor to dig deep and make that journey and reach that peak. The grace he showed afterward was maybe an even greater role model for me than winning. As a competitor, as a player, Roddick's journey was dramatic, intense, bittersweet, but always so inspiring to watch.
Roddick held serve an insane 37 straight games in this match but needed 38, and this remains the only slam final in history where the loser was only broken once. This still hurts to watch as I was rooting for Andy very hard. Federer owned him so much that even when Roddick outplayed him, he still couldn’t beat Roger when it was there for the taking. That , of course, is part of why Federer is in the GOAT conversation............... until Novak started showing him what it feels like to be Andy Roddick. 3 times in Wimbledon Finals alone. 😎
@@TheFpzsomb I am a Fed fan but I don't hate Novak. His tennis is beautiful. But I still can't believe that Roger didn't convert those match points. Wimbledon 2019 hurts more than any other grand slam.
I wanted Roddick to win so much. I followed his career from the start and he was my favorite player then. One of the first tennis matches that I saw was the final US open in 2003 and I really liked the big serve, big forehand play style. I played a lot of tennis myself and I wanted to copy that play style. Back to 2009. I was glued to the TV. And when I had to eat with my parents I watched the live score on my phone. I was so invested I yelled after every important point, win or lose. I still think that Andy deserved the win and he was the overall better player that match. But Federer is Federer, and Andy playing the match of his life didnt' change that.
OMG! I cried watching this Live. Andy Roddick Gave all of ounce of blood and sweat to this. It's very amazing to see that he didn't shed a tear. Denied 4 times By RF 03 SF 04F 05F 09F in wimbledon. In the end it was that Federer has so many weapons in his bag to win it as roddick lacked a powerful backhand chip shot and volley but yes this was the most amazing performance of his career.
I was just six years old when I watched this match so I dont remember a lot of it. But my dad, who is a very big Federer fan, says it's the best match he has even seen. He always says how Roddick wasn't broken even once until the last game. He says he was happy for Federer but felt really bad for Andy on losing a match with such stats.
i went from being a roddick fan at 12, to being kind of annoyed by him for a long time, but this match completely made me find a lot of respect for him forever on out
His fans are appreciating Andy here except for few. Novak fans rather insulted and are insulting Roger after that loss. Looks like humanity is going downhill.
Vik Sinha yeah I came across that video of his match against Wawarinka but there it looked like except for Novak fans everyone(including Rafa fans) was blaming him though bad apples exist on both sides it’s just that currently the ones on Novak’s side are more visible since he is winning.
I never saw Andy hit his backhand so well. It wasn't a liability in this match. When it's that close, hard fought and well played, it comes down to who blink first. It could have been either one. Now, for those saying Andy would have many slam to his name if not for Roger, it's not that simple. Roger isn't in the tournament? Roger doesn't beat some dangerous opponents on his way to the final. Andy has to handle the dangerous player who get to the final. The what if...speculations are fun, nothing more.
I didn't quite realize how sad it was that Roddick lost this one (and just never won one in general) until Wimbledon did that ceremony with all the singles champions a few years ago. Roddick deserved to be there.
Two men of extraordinary class. Roddick took his many losses to Federer with grace and sometimes even with humor. It must have hurt to fall short in front of all those legends, especially after an epic match like the '09 final. For Federer's part, Roddick would state in an interview that after this final, Roger and his team came back to the locker room but kept their celebrations very quiet and subdued out of respect for Roddick.
If Federer hadnt been there, Roddick would have had many slam titles, it reminds me of Djoker being Feds achilles heel after 2010, if Dhoekr wasnt there Fed would have had over 40+ grand slams
Roger and Andy played 4 Grand Slam finals. Roger won them all. If it weren't for Roger, it's almost certain that Roddick would've been a multiple Grand Slam winner. Roger broke Andy once in the entire match and if Andy hadn't missed that sitter volley in the 2nd set tiebreak, Andy may very well have won the match. But Roger is Roger. There's a reason why many consider him to be the GOAT. Like Roger said, it's a shame that someone has to lose. They both deserved to win and strangely I didn't want either to lose. I definitely teared up when I saw Andy with the towel over his head after the match. To have worked so hard and come so close only to come up just a little bit short had to be the toughest moment in his professional career. I truly admire him for how graciously he handled the moment. And also of course Roger for how he also handled the moment. Definitely one of the best matches I've ever seen.
I wish he would have stuck around the pro tour another 3-4 years. He still had game, his body and his ego just wouldn’t let him continue...I wonder if he would’ve had an Ivanisevic moment - to win Wimbledon at the end of his career.
@@proshepherd just needed someone like an Anderson to take him out, someone like Raonic to take Roger out and Rafa wasn’t that much of a factor on grass mid 2010s
Roddick won 39 games in this match which amazingly is the most games ever won by any player in any Grand Slam final in history - and did not win the match. That's almost incomprehensible.
I'm so sad and he didn't win this match or ever win Wimbledon... If federer wasn't around he would have won so many slams. And then nadal came along also. He was born in the unluckiest era really. A few years earlier he would have cleaned up. One of the most satisfying playes to watch with those incredible power ground strokes
When history is set to be made,we would wondering who will be the key to determine that. Federer met Roddick at that point and yeah it isn't an easy battle for either side.
Fed is the only reason Roddick isn't perennially sitting in the Champion's Box eating strawberries next to Borg and Sampras. The guy has multiple Wimby's in any other era. He would have been a deserving champion too.
Rafa earned every bit of 2008, especially after the previous 2 years, mainly 2007. I'd have given Rafa 2008, Roddick 2009 and Roger 2019. This I think would've been the fairest outcome.
Roddic Should have won the first time against Roger. Roger wasn't that invincible in the early part of his career. Roddic is like Jimmy White of tennis.
Was never a fan of the interview style instead of just them making speech on their own but they used to be short & sweet with Sue. Dunno what’s changed now they’re unnecessary long for no reason.
I don't know what Wimbledon Channel are playing at but this is kind of embarrassing to put up speeches like tis. They have an infinite amount of resources / archive matches, they really should be putting it to better use.
How about honoring him and putting full match or decent length highlights of his epic semi final vs Murray in same 2009 Wimbledon. (6-4, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6).
People forgot that he had 2 grueling matches against Hyewitt and Murray before he faced Roger in the final. To be able to hang with Roger all the way to a 5th set epic is a win in itself already.
@Beach and Nature fan His fighting spirit was underrated. Definitely not the fastest guy on the tour but he sometimes had that Nadal-like attitude to never give up. I really miss Roddick's slegehammer forehand in 2003-2006.
