*A GAME THEORY!*

Tbh the story is kind of spelled out right in front of us and it's definitely not that. Thomas seems to be possessed by some sort of dark entity (represented by Peter Pumpkin and is shown as a mass of eyes/a shadowy humanoid figure) which causes him to kill everyone he considers close after his son, Louis, died. He sets the house the family lived in on fire with his wife and child still inside, and then kills his best friend Arthur. They then somehow possess the characters in the game, alluded to by Thomas mentioning creating technology making the characters more "lifelike". Perhaps the technology wasn't technology at all, and Thomas summoned this dark entity to make his game better, or perhaps to even save his son?
