Here's an interview with Andy Newman founder and pianist of the short lived English band Thunderclap Newman which will forever be remembered for it's worldwide classic hit Something in the Air. Recorded in 2010 for my radio program Retrospectives on Casey Radio in Melbourne, Australia. Andy sadly passed away in 2016.

Loved this song when I was a preteen, still do. Thanks for the interview audio.

Thunderclap Newman was such a unique band. Speedy Keen and Jimmy McCulloch were well ahead of their contemporaries and Andy Newman provided wonderful leadership as his ego did not get in the way of the Youngins'. If you put their album on your turntable it will be in your rotation if you try it out... great great album.

Andy "Thunderclap" Newman was an avid collector of 78rpm records. A familiar face at the Croydon Record fair. Sad to hear of his passing.

I knew Andy in the 70's . Great guy and even invited me into a London studio with Bowie! Spent many a night drinking together chatting.

First heard "Something In The Air" from "The Strawberry Statement" movie soundtrack. He sampled Scott Joplin's (ragtime) "Maple Leaf Rag" in the song. (The "Strawberry Statement" was actually about US student demonstrations in the 60s)

The solo isn't maple leaf rag , it's his own composition based around his experience of rags boogie etc
