@@arthistorystorytime If anyone can it's you. I have watched hours long documentaries on Warhol and you come out with all of these specifics that I didn't know. I had headphones on but I atleast mouthed "what?" when I learned he was a pathological liar. The specificity of his drug use is often left vague but you came out with names and the chemical makeups of them with a timeline. I honestly admire your work.
@@arthistorystorytime I wonder how many are like sages or philosiphers, In sharp dress and coherent until they hit the drugs and it's train wreck time. You may wish you hadent looked.Full on melt down of people who seem to be the smartest of all. Scary!
@@DazeyChaineMusic the gallbladder produces bile that aids digestion. it's very simple. his diet was horrendous and amphetamines used chronically will exacerbate the condition. do you always resort to insult in discourse? is that an 'artistic' tactic from your charm school?
Fun fact: People discovered that Obetrol while a drug to combat obesity, had properties that helped people with ADHD get some sort of dopamine, so in the late 90’s Obetrol got renamed Adderall
Andy was my neighbor in Manhattan and we walked our dogs together. He was a very sweet guy and always affectionate to my pup Mr Duffy. Warhol was considered 'genius level' as a student in Pittsburgh and his eventual use of repetition had more to do with art history than some trendy statement on mass production or the use of some speed. He is acknowledged as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century for a reason.
@@arthistorystorytime sure np, I was just 19 when I knew near Andy, now I live in Pittsburgh and know his nephews. You often see young men here who look exactly like Andy as a boy. It's poignant.
He( Andy Warhol) and those associated with him were quite the fascination at the time in the 60's in particular and continue to be. In a documentary about him I viewed a few months back apparently/supposedly the Warhol name change came from a typo credit that he liked and kept. He certainly was productivity obsessed( hence the drugs). He may have been "on the spectrum" as well. I had a time years ago ( with Deitch Projects in NYC) being involved in a capacity with some who knew Mr Warhol and/or were inspired by him. Thanks!
An acquaintance of mine related how he approached a man from behind who had dark hair on the back of his head, but oddly appearing light hair on the sides. When he got around in front of him he realized it was Andy Warhol.
You've done an amazing job, at encapsulating us into this era. This was always an interesting point of time for me, Lou Reed, Velvet Underground, and the feeling of "expression." You can tell, this came out of the Beatnik culture, and formed into it's own little culture immediately. Not many people would focus on the Amphetamine/Methamphetamine aspect, as it used to offend people (because they used to do those drugs) - now in today's society, we see that it was very crucial in the "mental health" aspects, that we often overlooked for decades. This modern era, of perspective, will help us look back at these times with more of an understanding socially.
I've been a huge fan of Warhol and all pop artists from that era. The one thing I never did was enjoy their art for the quirky and bizarre nature of the individual artist. The image they create with their art and not the image they create with their lifestyle is where my appreciation came from. To me, it's about the image and what I see and feel and not what the artist thinks or wants or expects me to feel and think. Art is a very personal journey not only for the creator but the viewer as well.
Very true! At the core, it’s about your personal experience with the art piece. But for me, I’m always curious about the person behind the work. Always have been. I can enjoy a piece of art for arts sake but eventually I get curious about the person and the context. Thanks for watching!!
I hate Warhol!!!! He destroyed modern art with the repetitive plagiarized crap he created in the 'factory'. Picasso or Dali never had a factory. You know why? Because they were REAL artists.
Everyone, including housewives were addicted to speed. There was a whole dang crisis from the, roughly, 40s to 70s. Speed, crank, uppers, pills were everywhere and everyone did them, it was like coffee, documented at the highest levels of government (and probably started there too).
I read somewhere that Warhol was a regular Mass goer. That signals an immense internal conflict with his artistic output, public persona and social activities. A complex man would be an understatement!
Yeah Andy went to mass but he stood in the back, did not participate in the sacrament and would leave early. I'd say he was conflicted alright. Poor guy. He definitely loved his mom though!
Let's not get it twisted everybody that hung around Andy Warhol was there for the fame the drugs and the sex they know what they're getting into so they participated the early days of clout chasing😂
Totally, they wanted to be famous for being famous and beautiful for being able to imagine themselves as beautiful, but it was just a lot of self-indulgent horseshit that yielded a few interesting stories and SOME good art which became extremely influential, but mostly garish trash and a good example of capitalistic excess.
Look up the story of the mathematician Paul Erdös, a lifelong amph user. A friend made a bet with him that he could not quit for a month. As the story goes, Erdös won the bet and told his friend that he had set the progress of mathematics back by a month.
If you grew up around speed addicts, you'd know they never do burn out - they hide, until they have their stash refilled. Tweakers have been around for decades, and are still getting very high. Some of them have been alive that long. Men's hearts are weaker, than a woman's, thus you'll see women exist as addicts much longer.
......It depends on one`s immune system & phycological makeup... It's amazing how unique we all are... Some people can sit on a porch and consume Moonshine & tabaco till they die at 95🤔... Have a good day... ...Old Naples Florida🌴🎨
he singlehandedly destroyed the indie art community forever, turning it into a ruthless rat race that eats visionaries before they get a chance to mass produce their lazy products.
Very informative video thank you for sharing. I’ve always been interested in Andy and The Velvet Underground. It must have been something to live in New York in 1966.
Enjoyed this video and cemented my view that this artist were more fascinating as a person than his works that do not resonate with me (all personal view but still hold firm to it).
...Love your very interesting videos📽...Some people lie so much; it isn't lying anymore...Remember ( Scarface ) Al Pacino " I always tell the truth, even when I lie " Of Andy`s worsts addictions! The Concrete Jungle...Thank you beautiful, your artsy personality, is my addiction🌹... ...Old Naples Florida🌴🎨
I've been to a lot of places in my lifetime and in none of those places has anyone shoved a Quaalude into my mouth. Time to start going to different places. Great video, Stephanie!
Carnegie Institute of Technology is not an art school but a regular college where Andy studied art. Today it's known as the prestigious Carnegie Mellon University or as locals know it as, CMU..
He’s lucky he didn’t get psychosis a lot of people that do uppers get psychosis and some are never the same ever again. Interesting video but I also wanted to learn about any other drugs he did unless that is the only thing on record.
Para mim as drogas são uma chave que encaixa na fechadura de uma porta e a abre... quando se trata de artistas elas adquirem uma importância que só o artista conhece......e claro isso se reflete em seu trabalho.......
I recall reading somewhere that he said he used amphetamine irregularly and in a much more milder dose that those around him at the time. I think those around him were his ‘superstars’.
you think Warhol's fame and success was sociogenic? Like the people around him and the social status allowed for the encouragement notoriety and access to the streams of revenue and engagement needed for that success? Thanks for this, they're great.
Yes, I think it all contributed. I think what you're describing is a positive feedback loop and we see this play out today with social media memes and trends.
The edits in this vid are wayyy too choppy which makes it almost unwatchable… Great research & delivery but the visual edits are too jarring to the eye to be enjoyable, but, cool info (& great voice) to listen to so definitely keep making these 🙏🏽💚👍🏽
Sorry about that. And thank you! This comes from trying something new out where I don't use a teleprompter for the script I write for myself and instead just an outline and talking into the camera. But it's hard to spew out a whole page or paragraph smoothly without pauses, glancing down, or tripping over my words. Haha 😅 Will keep practicing though.
@@arthistorystorytime nothing to be sorry about, your vids are great 😊 I just thought you should know so you could tighten it up but I totally get it - memorizing your script for a single take is crazy but im sure eventually you can get it down to less cuts (or X amount of “scenes”) so it’s smoother for the viewer, but, either way your videos are Awesome so Thank You for putting out such good quality content! 🙌🏽🔥🔥🙃🔥🔥👍🏽
I just found a show called MR PEEPERS. Most innovative artist are a cross between insecure and wily. The wierder drugs probably did n didnt help. I think ultimately too many hangers-on ruines things
I would use the term "Keeping them in his orbit" rather than 'under his control' Warhol surrounded himself with the "Beautiful People" because of his sense of inadequacy, and need for attention.
Super interesting. I’m a fan of the velvet underground and that’s really how I began to learn about Warhol… it’s wild learning how much drugs go into art and music.
i cant believe you are saying all this about andy warhol without even mentioning the main underlying thing behind his issues was he was freakin gay and it was a struggle for anybody in those days.
No Warhol will ever match your beauty, dear Stephanie! I was introduced tot the music of the VU underground at a tender age, and became very aware of all the drug references in their work whilst studying the words of Lou Reed. More than a Warhol fan I became a lifelong VU/Lou Reed/Nico/Cale fan. You make for very dopey & addictive vids, thank you! 💋
Never been very sure about old Andy. I tend to skip over him I like Philip Guston I have been on all sorts of mind-altering substances speed is good 😂 the creativity is in constant flux the comedown is nasty
trite commodification at the expense of exploited speed freaks ain't that at microcosm of american culture at large. not knocking andy his influence was wide reaching but i agree with previous sentiment that the devaluation of art in america was largely to blame on him
How can you KNOW that he was addicted? How many people today are prescribed stimulants that have been life changing. Also, the people who flocked to him must have loved being there and wouldn’t have changed it for the world. I left my well paying job in Architecture to assist an artist, because his creative energy fed my soul. I have no regrets.
For sure! They wanted to be there. They weren’t held hostage. Some did express resentment though. Some aspects of relationships are more clearly observed from a distance and with time vs when you’re in it. And that’s fair, I know I can’t fully know anything about historical figures as I was not there nor was I them. It’s a conclusion based on quotes, events, and art left behind.
First, I love your channel. But I just wanted to step in and tell you that is not why he changed his name. Someone published his name incorrect, and Andy liked it, so he kept it like that. That's the whole real story. Lol
Commenting and passing judgement on artists' private lives and not their actual work, esp after they're dead is pretty lame. Also, all this is old news so you're just raking over very, very cold ashes. If you've got nothing positive or new to say, say nothing at all imo. Seems a waste of your intelligence and talent, tbh, you seem like you could up your game way above stooping to this tired salacious shtick. How about some analysis of the actual artwork from your own perspective? Seems more in line with your channel tag no? What does it matter who was an addict, or who took what?!? It's about what they achieved in life, no?
Commenting on drug use and his surroundings is commentary on the artwork.. an artists environment is worth researching, don’t think it’s meant as an attack
This is not an attack on Andy, I even say so at 06:17. And I'm always interested in art analysis and appreciation, but I've also always been interested in biographies. The good, bad, and ugly that happened is interesting! This video just covers 1 small and rather condensed aspect of his life, drug use. It doesn't mean it's all he did or all that matters and certainly not a put down on Andy.
