Membership and Development Coordinator Kyle Dalton discussed the use of anesthesia during the Civil War. Though many often don’t associate anesthesia with Civil War medicine, it was used in over 95% of Civil War surgery. Kyle outlined the use of chloroform and ether in the 19th century and how it came to be so pervasive in the Civil War in both the US and Confederate armies.

Thank you so much for this stream! I always love them, considering I'm not native to the US and cannot visit the museum, and gladly enjoy anything that's been presented. Also, thanks for naming resources. Can't wait for the next one!

It's my understanding that ether's flammability killed more than one surgeon and patient, not just in field surgeries, back when it was used prominently.

Good video. Why do you have toilet paper on the shelf behind you? Haha.

For the bitten bullet, I could see this happening with the musketry drill of American soldiers: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YpoDO9uucNw.html They would be issued paper cartages, the drill would bite off the tail end of the cartage to power the black powder charge into the barrel followed by the mini ball. What if they bit the cartages in heat of battle the wrong way (the ball is covered by paper) and did it hard enough to leave marks? Only logical reason I can see this happing...
