I'm going to watch this for you AliG. I couldn't face the Gold & Guest podcast, but just for you I'll persevere. Yesterday was awful. It's amazing a group of young millionaires I have nothing in common with ruin my week.
Hi Ally, you’re the only person I’ll listen to about yesterday. I’m looking forward to watching this. You’re the most balanced reporter, bar none. Praise or criticism, you apply both with dexterity. So, in advance, thank you for keeping an old man sane ☺️☺️
Never was the sigh more warranted. Tottenham's ability to go from the sublime to the ridiculous is both worrying and annoying. The player's performance in the first half was sublime and in the second half ridiculous. Ange's tactics in the first half sublime, his inactivity with substitutions and directing from the touch line in the second ridiculous. Every team we will play in the league and in Europe will have periods of control over the game, if Ange can't find some pragmatic tweaks when opposition are in the assendancy similar capitulations will keep happening and although I think it's way premature the noise to have Ange removed will get louder and louder. Fair play to Brighton.
Oh Ali, i was on cloud 9 when we was 2-0 up, then brought right back down to earth at full time 😭😞. Listening to you will make it feel abit better. Cheers Ali
I was so happy at halftime, I thought we played really well first half. Then after the break we just couldn't handle them. We needed a leader on the pitch, apart from the goalkeeper I didn't see anyone geeing any of the players up.
I feel like Welbeck missing that sitter was a blessing in disguise for Brighton. Brighton momentum could have been blunted by halftime, and it would have given Spurs something to think about at halftime and make necessarily adjustments for the 2nd half. Instead, they just couldn't stop the momentum once Brighton started scoring early in the 2nd half.
I think possibly Ange detected some hubris in the dressing room at half time? And then let the players see for themselves how that can bring about a downfall? It’s a tough lesson but one it appears was required. Ange is confident but he does not want overconfidence or arrogance. If it is a lesson, this is the right time of the season to deliver it.
Son even though he is perceived as a quiet leader. We’ve had many videos that showed the opposite. Even Brennan and Maddison have refuted it. Romero should’ve been commanding his backline and telling them what to do. Maddison as well should’ve held his side of the pitch accountable.
Cluelees idiots mentioning ange stood there and did nothing. Just a question: Who is Ange meant to replace Romero, Vdv and Udogie with? Maybe Spence for Udogie. These are the players who cost us the game. We dont have replacements. The only mistake i thought ange made was not getting Udogie straight off after that disgraceful first goal effort and not getting Bentancur off earlier. Hecouldd have brought Moore on earlier as well but with the team playing so poorly I don't know if that would have made any difference.
Agree, other than Son that was our first 11 and the first half showed what they are capable of - it’s on the players about their attitude change in the second half.
17:21 - That was what I was thinking along with a lot of others. Romero has had too many lapses probably down to fatigue. My own personal hottake is that Ange is learning on the fly and not bringing a wealth of experience to the situation. He should be rotating players more as all the players that played midweek looked gassed.
I thought he would have played Spence over Perro and Radu over Romero. I have also notice that when Romero gets fatigue he lapses. He isn't as sharp. After the IB Radu is able to play in the EL again. So Romero will be rested.
Thanks for having the strength to make a video after that mare of a performance, Alasdair. I agree with you that Ange needed to react sooner with his subs. I would have brought on Spence or Gray for Werner after the second Brighton goal and given them freedom to roam where needed either side of the pitch. In his post-match interview Ange claimed that substitutions and all those kind of things were totally irrelevant to him, and if you're not competitive you don't deserve to win. Which begs the question of whether any subs that he could have brought on might well have shown the competitive spirit that he wanted. It was almost as if he wanted to punish the team and let them fall to defeat. To do nothing until the last 10 minutes was difficult for us mere fans to comprehend.
Didn't expect to hear the sigh after the first half performance, but here we are. Watching this was a very cathartic experience for me Ali. Cheers to being able to break down a complex situation and truly bizarre match so well!
Love Ange, but if you play the high line and you have access to some quality subs, you need to replace players from the 60 minute mark. Gives the team fresh legs. Spence hasn’t been playing and would be chomping at the bit. Bringing Moore on for Werner. Bringing Biss or Sarr on or both. Gives the team impetus. Been saying this since he started and will continue until the end off his reign. Ange is still the man for the job in rebuilding the Spurs, it’s still a young team, they are learning and I’m sure Ange is as well, hopefully won’t see what happened with Porro and Johnson again, it is concerning that he doesn’t coach on the run like Pep does,I’ll be honest. The whole mix up between Porro and Johnson could have been avoided by Ange simply telling Johnson to stick to the left back. Sitting back with your arms folded just doesn’t work in the best league in the world. Have to be able to adapt formations and players on the run.
That second half is a result of a team thinking they had won the game by half time. Another example of a team empty of anyone with a killer instinct. They are unable to cope with any kind of pressure placed upon them. This is why we have the moniker of Spursy, and it won't go away until we get players with a killer instinct, and the mentality to make sure they do not lose a game that they are in total control of. Yet another false dawn at White Hart Lane.
I agree with the reason Ange gave re lack of early substitution. If you wish to build resilience in a team, then saving the players from themselves - their lack of grit/desire - is not going to achieve that. They, themselves, need to want that win at all costs & had that desire been there they would not have folded in such a manner. Sheer capitulation.
The whole of the game it was patently obvious Porto and Johnson had a problem defensively , we got away with it in the first half , but Ange failed to address this issue at H.T or in the second half . This game has two facets , offensive and defensive , you cannot just concentrate on the former .
This has to be on Ange , it is naive to think Brighton were not going to change things at half time , surely Ange should of had a plan ready if the second half was going wrong , to do nothing and let the team fail in front of everyone eyes , almost like he wanted them to suffer to prove some type of point . I simply don't understand when your 2 up , just making sure your tight and solid for 15 minutes . The whole attack attack attack thing is mind blowing arrogance .
Thanks for this thorough analysis of a heartbreaking match. Agree with you wholeheartedly and think the lack of leadership really had an impact. I also appreciated your contextual points. Hoping for no injuries incurred in international break! Hope you have a fabulous holiday!
I think it is pure and simple that the team had become complacent given recent results. If we want to be really critical, we could say that again for all that possession in the first half we scored one good goal while Maddison's should have been saved. Even in the first half, there were at least two occassions when Brighton could have had a goal. I still think we are on the right track. Yes, Ange has never managed a side at this level but he does have a lot of experience as a manager and I think he will come good.
It really was a game of 2 half's one manager seen the problem and fixed it the other waited till 78 min to change it. Alot will disagree but far too late and attacking sub 84 min. Players at fault but manager never managed the game.
If that's the case, it could be a lesson well taught. We need to score 5 goals per game playing Ange's system in the prem. It's otherwise not a guaranteed win.
Yeah, most on here say [in short] it was all Ange's fault, it confirms i guess that haters are going to hate, and whingers are going to whinge. But for me i would rather try and see were we went wrong, and try to fix them and do better in our next game, instead of finding some person to blame and then complaining and moaning about it. Ange In COYS!!.......The Aussie Spurs Fan.
No need to complicate the explanations or demand removing the manager. It should be easy for the manager to understand: You cannot maintain the same stamina for such intensive play as occured in the first half. There should have been two or three changes if not at the start of the 2nd half, then absolutely after Brighton's first goal. Hoping that things will straighten out by themselves is naive.
Not mad at all, we fell apart at Leicester in a similar fashion, they just weren’t good enough to capitalise. We easily could have done so last week too, if Utd weren’t so poor. We are so easily rattled. It seems like a tradition handed down from squad to squad.
That is a very good point about Hojbjerg. He led by example. but ange jettisoned all the senior leaders from previous seasons, presumably as he doesn't want his strange methods questioned. He even got rid of skipp, our future captain, just in case. This is not a man at all confident of his abilities at this level.
I do think it was a mistake to get rid of a player like Hojbjerg, he would have been the perfect type of player to bring on in the 2nd half. Ange In COYS!!.......The Aussie Spurs Fan.
100% on the false reward thing. Total garbage, just a spoilt child being stubborn answer. Needs to be careful what he says about these things and winning in 2nd season. Giving ammo to the media needlessly
Maybe the team were trying to manage the game in 2nd half but couldn’t handle Brighton’s press. Plus a bit of complacency may have played a part in their awful 2nd half display. Whatever the case, we are looking for excuses at this point. The team let the badge down: every single one of them.
Timo...oh Timo. That touch was terrible...utterly terrible. How many chances is Ange going to give him? There has to be a suitable LW backup. There has to be.
I’m going to be honest. I was thinking we’ve won the game after two goals. I was even predicting Moore and Lankshear will get their first senior goals. This was a good reminder how competitive this league is. Complacency is everywhere from the players to fans.
Don't understand why he waited so long to make his subs when he admitted himself that the most disappointing thing was the lack of compete and intensity. Feels like that's when you need subs to create new energy and wake up the team and he waited too long. Also why bring on Mikey when the pressure is the highest it gets, might as well start him, because that would put less pressure on him...
First let me say Romero is a good player, but his performances this season have been poor. He is missing too many tackles, he is failing to cut out crosses that he should block, he is not dominating our six yard box at set pieces, he is not showing any leadership by organising or marshalling the defence and his body language is poor. But most importantly he is switching off far too often and regularly costing us goals. Romero is an extremely experienced senior player but seems incapable of showing composure and leading by example. He may be a swashbuckling figure but he isn’t a leader. He’s too into his own game to ever be. I don’t know if he’s suffering a Copa America hangover, or is coasting because he thinks he’s undroppable but his performances are way below what he’s capable of. Personally I’d bench him until he gets his act together.
As much as I’d love to see us even marginally protect a 2-0 lead with a tactical adjustment to “grab the away points” I’m certainly not qualified to question the tactics. However it doesn’t take a professional eye to see that full throttle aggressive football requires fresh legs earlier in the second half than is our standard.. Might even save a few hamstrings? Fresh legs help in every sport at those dig deep moments, football is no exception. The competition level in the prem demands it. Ange is an incredible coach and I love what he’s about but god this was a self inflicted kick in the groin.
Watching the match I felt in the first half it was too easy for Spurs. They were in behind at will. Just a few quick passes. I felt that if Brighton scored they would go on to win the match. When they got the first goal that was it. Ange not making subs until the 70th min will slated though think He was shellshock at what was happening. I was thinking that Destiny should have been taken off after the first Brighton goal. He made a mistake and never recovered. Spence coming on would have added freshness. Also though Radu should have started over Romero. What is being notice about Romero is when he starts to get tired he switches of. The 2nd Brighton goal came about due to him rushing out and missing the player and ball. 3rd Brighton goal Romero just watch Welbeck. Romero was the captain when he faded Spurs faded. Benta faded badly too. Brighton wanted it more and got the win. Spurs have been on the good side of a comeback win so being on the wrong end of one can be taken.
Thanks for your insight. Always valuable listening. I get the feeling that Ange is going to persist with his vision. Only the reality of the current situation is no where near it. Players just arent capable of maintaining the required style and philosophy over and over for 3 games a week. It took one half for a young opposition coach to outdo where the squad is at. What Ange needs is to be flexible until he has the squad depth to match his process. Maybe that will be when we have a stronger squad to interchange players that are letting down him, the side and the fans. So no one gets complacent. This isnt going to happen in one or two windows. Its going to be more of the same for the rest of this season.
Nobody mentions this but at 2-1 Porro crossed to ball perfectly for Romero who had a free header. Looked like a glorious chance for 3-1 or have I overlooked something. Kulu as captain in Son's absence? He's vocal, outgoing and speaks well. Q: When was the last time Spurs trailed by 2 goals at half-time and ended up winning?
The glaring issue with Spurs, which often goes unspoken, is the lack of a strong, commanding captain. Historically, Spurs' most successful teams always had a tough, authoritative leader on the pitch. In recent years, we’ve been missing that. I genuinely believe that one of the reasons Spurs secured their last trophy was due to Jonathan Woodgate’s presence. We are lacking a dominant, vocal figure on the field to push the players, and this absence has been a problem for a considerable time in the club’s history. It’s something that urgently needs addressing. These kind of situations shine light on this.
Don't shoot me.. But essentially its one bad half We are far from perfect but its also far from Nunoball. Still plenty of positives even on a nightmare day We got 2 weeks to sulk then we start to climb again.COYS
No way finally a team take their chances against spurs I mean it was always goin to happen eventually. As for Ange we need a goal and he brings on subs at 77mins and 1 of them is sarr over bergvall haha. Moore only good enough to get 6mins over ange’s star man Werner and where was spence as clearly udogies head was gone. I’m still Ange in for sure but his in game management is alarming at times. Positives may Johnson continue to prove me wrong and I’m really enjoying solankes hold up/link up play
At 55 minutes I said to my son subs subs subs. Ange is too slow to Sub. At 60 minutes sub and at 65 minutes sub sub sub bloody sub! Destiny had a terrible second half and I was crying for Djed Spence to have an opportunity and 7 minutes for Werner sub ridiculous! Ali thanks for your honest and balanced perspective
Absolutely crap second half, ange is so so stubborn!! Ha has no plan B he had all those subs and never used them??? I now don’t think he is good enough for the premiership???? He needs to get our team to defend a lead??? Stop leading a high line??? He has to adapt to the premier ship???? And he needs to drop Romero !!
The first half we pressed and pressed. Right from the start of the 2nd half, we stopped pressing. Which allowed Brighton to take control. Why do you think that was Al?
Can't press relentlessly for 90 minutes wears players out. Arsenal and city do it in phases then have 10-15 minutes spells in between where slow it down pass it around take sting out of game ans then go again. To think you can play high octane full on pressing football and attacking football for 90 minutes week in week out is naive. He will be gone by Xmas unless he adapts.
Romero should have covered Porro on cross for Brighton's first goal but really not Romero 's fault , midfielder should have been there to cover Porro ( defensive midfielder) having seen B winger giving us huge problems all the time. Plan B should have been , keep it tight for 20 minutes , no stupid mistakes , then perhaps a third could have been scored. Instead , Plan A all out attack and we suffered. Third goal was the worst for passive defending. Shocking second half performance and ruins another Sunday. What can you say ?
I’m in Vancouver (YVR) been rough camping on V.Is, Quadra and Cortez, sea kayaking in Tofino and dodging Bears in forests around Campbell River-l’m going back in May.l❤️Canada!
Hi Ali, love the video as always. In fairness to Ange...I think he was in shock..it was a total systems failure... the whole team collectively crawled into their shells...they need a leader...as you suggest. Mark
Would have been really interesting to have been a inivisible secret ear and eye in that Tottenham locker room at half time. What was the team and the gaffer talking about...and how? Did they already half celebreating a win? What was the "wise" words for second half? If there was anything like a feeling of "we have it already"...they have all learned a VERY HARD EARNED lesson now. I hope and wish that lesson learned will be ONLY a very positive thing moving forward this season...and onwards.
The only positives worthy of comment came from the commentary.... "⁰Mickey VDV was clocked at 23mph last week at old Trafford.. that's illegal on most high streets" lmao... So I think it's fair to call him Mickey white Van man Der Ven Whilst I'm on the nickname vibe... Temu Werner - he's not quite the winger you wanted
Have a great break Alasdair. Q, Anymore news on anyone buying a percentage of the club?? Q, What players do you think Spurs should be looking at for January transfer??
Terrible second half against Brighton. Johnson still playing well and getting chances to score, so 6 goals in 6 games now. Hate the International breaks, happening way too often these days. Don't remember it like that decades ago.
It looked like to me that Romaro was cheesed of with his partners while Van just had nothing left in the tank, both of them were not happy with the teams cover and just couldn't cope with what was coming their way.
A sigh is undoubtedly the right response! What the 💩 happened after the first half? Why does our club torture us time and time again? Do they want us to love or hate us?😅
We obviously did something bad in a previous life and the powers that be decided we needed to suffer for our sins. And it was decided "I will make them Spurs supporters!"
Don’t ever change the format Ali. The wait of 24 hours before publication makes it worth listening to IMO. Way too much reactionary emotional nonsense on so many other popular channels. Mind you I do get it, if I was to voice my thoughts straight after that match I’d probably be banned from RU-vid!! 🙂 Shocking embarrassing toothless second half display, the type of display I thought we’d seen the back of, but…. we cannot ignore how brilliantly we’ve played in EVERY other half this season, bar the Brighton 2nd and the Coventry 1st half (ok, and a fair chunk of the 2nd half of that game). Point being, as poor as it was yesterday, the positives by far outweigh the negatives this season. Let’s just hope lessons have been learnt…
Defence all over the place 2nd half Udogie was shocking for the 1st goal and no better for the others mayb needs a spell on the bench 4 nxt game and give Spence a run, but players need to have a look at themselves that 2nd half just not acceptable too soft.
I would love to ask timo has he been working on his one v one with a keeper in training- I think not as he is so poor and saw no improvement whatsoever !
Apparently in practice he scores very consistently, he has had a good career when he was young, but he has a clear mental block in the game that affects him.
Since 1962 guys. Year on year trying to win the league. How many souls have cone and gone, oraying, hoping, only to be let down like this time and time again. This team is soiritually...... 😡😡😡😡😡
Man Utd prob. have a worse problem with an ineffective captain - it is not always the most obvious senior player but most often one of the centre halves who is in the midst of play with the largest physical presence.
Postecoglou is terrible with subs. He did the same at celtic so many times but lucky enough to get away with it. It's madness not to make changes until the games are either wrapped up or loss imminent. Mind boggling to play Porro and Romero the whole mid week games and then almost the whole of the next game. Bentancur is not good enough, 1 avg game out of 10 is not good enough.
"Brighton have only lost once this season" yeah and we have lost three, says it all really. They thought it was all over at half time, totally unprofessional, more concerned about throwing pretend darts. Kamikaze football but don't worry he wins things in second season.
In a nutshell - Ange is a 100 metre runner attempting a marathon. Every time its the same nonsense. Anybody can play champagne football for 45 mins. As soon as there is a need for leadership on or off the pitch, it's nowhere to be seen. Ange can moan all he wants. It's his responsibility. You can't be this far into your Spurs tenure and still be so ineffectual when momentum shifts during a game. That's your job as a manager. It is to manage. It's not rocket science. This whole '5 win streak' chat is also misleading. We've struggled through beating some poor opposition. It isn't an achievement. Romero needs shifting. He goes missing far too often and I feel he wanted that Madrid move. He just seems disinterested half the time.
