Tom flies in with a freshly caught chipmunk and Deyani mantles and claims it. The chipmunk is not alive (the wind is blowing its tail) and Tom had started to open it up on a small portion of its underside. Over the the next 25 minutes, Deyani figured out how to unzip it and began to self feed. Deyani tried to swallow it whole during the self feeding process but that was not successful so it continued to tear off smaller pieces and tried again and this time did manage to swallow the remains of the chipmunk. This was a good learning experience for the hawklet as it now is capable of fully self feeding and eating a mammal without the help of Mom.
Deyani would get additional rabbit prey after this delivery and had a crop that was ready to explode! Stay tuned for my next video on our hawk family. Thank you for watching!
