I saw The Company of Wolves at the cinema and loved it. I had no idea it was a from a short story in the collection The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter. Superb film. Dark!
I have been reading Angela Carter's words for nearly 30 years now, and as much as I praise her works, I would like here to praise the Woman Angela Carter. She is someone whom I tried in vain to emulate as a person, because I did not have her Herculean strength of character. However her strength in words gave me more than I would have had without them, and an allay when I was brave enough tho break the mould, and will from beyond her grave remind me to stand up again when I allow myself to be trodden down. To be a wolf again.
Angela Carter is truly a one of a kind writer. I am currently, reluctantly, nearing the end of "Nights at the Circus". I say reluctantly because I just don't want it to ever end; it is such a delicious book!
@@isadoraurbano Thank you for posting the video! I have been a fan of Angela Carter for a couple of years now, and have collected a majority of her novels. Had read The Bloody Chamber collection first off, then The infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman, Heroes and Villains, and The Passion of New Eve next. Fully enjoyed those, but when I came to Nights at the Circus, my love for her writing fully blossomed. I am on her first novel now, Shadow Dance, and I am thoroughly enjoying it, as well.
My favourite writer; once in a million kind of person, and even though I never knew her, she died four years before I was born, she is someone we mourn the loss of. She is the sort of writer we need these days. “The Bloody Chamber”, “Nights at the Circus”, and all the other books are masterpieces. It’ll be hard for someone to fill her shoes.
"It'll be hard for someone to fill her shoes." No one will. It's easy to name a dozen or two other authors who can evoke the mythic and folkloric, but not one is as deeply rooted there as Carter. That's been my take for a long long time.
Thank you for posting this. A superb documentary for a wonderful writer. I was hoping to hear from her husband and son, but there's something quite classy in their absence.
10:18 to 10:43 Has anyone NOT felt this way sooner or later? You clean house so it can get messed up again so you'll have to clean again so it can get messed up etc till it takes over your life and fkng owns you. Maybe this is why I've always felt a deep attachment to Carter's writing, maybe I was sensing a kindred spirit.
As this breathtaking documentary was coming to a close, I could not help but think of how this artist and their writings have had and continue to have an effect on me. As silly as this following closing thought may be, I must share that this documentary pummelled me as like any of the BBC Earth documentaries pummel me. They leave all of me deeply enchanted and joyfully exhausted.
Its sad seeing a collection of story with no one making it as a film. I have adopted one story into a short film and wishing it can be made into a real film soon
When I was young I watched the BBC adaptation of the magic toy shop I was forever altered as if she opened a door to my other way of being I read a collection of her work and just become myself xxxx
Incredible! I was introduced to Angela Carter via my Junior year Fairey Tale course with the Professor & great Doctor McCloud! It was a FREE PASS to IMAGINATIONville & GREAT JOY! It is my deepest desire to produce a mass of output, as an artist does, which someday would inspire others by their consumption of the likes of my ingestion/absorption/regurgitation of like minded high quality, main course, imagination-ally, archetypal cuisine! Bon Appetite!
I’m about to start The Bloody Chamber for the third time. These stories remind me of tiramisu - rich and dark, probably dangerous (especially if you’re being careful about what you consume) but impossible to resist.
Oi, Paulo! Me desculpe.
She learned "Learned helplessness" from her mother ☹️😢 A helicopter parent does this to their kids..... It's brainwashing your kids into thinking they don't know how to do anything without you.
