Press reel of the first Broadway revival of Gypsy, starring Dame Angela Lansbury. She first performed it in London, from May to December of 1973, then took the show on an 11-stop pre-Broadway tour, finally opening on Broadway on September 23, 1974, and closing after a limited engagement of 120 performances on January 4, 1975. Joining Dame Lansbury were Zan Charisse, Rex Robbins, Mary Louise Wilson, Bonnie Langford and Lisa Peluso. This footage was shot early in the production at the Winter Garden Theatre, perhaps during previews.

I appeared with Angela in Gypsy 1973 at the Piccadilly theatre in London,,I was one of the kiddie newsboys. A thrilling experience to work with her.

Dame Angela is brilliant in anything! I think all Broadway show when they come to the end of their run should be filmed and sold or streamed. Dame Angela said that the only thing she will be remembered for in the theatre is 'Sweeny Todd' it was the only thing that was filmed. So sad we all should be able to see these brilliant people!

Hearing Dame Angela in her full-throated glory is simply enthralling! I am jealous of the audiences who got to see her Rose live in person! 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹

Her vocal control here is amazing. This is one of the reasons why she worked with Sondheim a lot. I don’t care if people slam me… but vocally she’s a million times better than Ethel Merman.

I saw this performance in London. June 1973. My first Rose. I’ll never forget her Rose’s Turn. The gold standard.

Just announced Angela L passed away at 96. What a force she is in these clips! I wish I had been able to see this woman during this time.

Your page is quickly becoming top of the list "go to" for musical theatre. I've seen this footage a few times, and happy to see it posted again, reaching more people. I'd actually watched all of this in the last few weeks, and it's silly to complain when it's such a miracle that ANY of this footage is now available to all of us - but it would have been a real treat to have all or even part of "You Gotta Get A Gimmick" - but this existig footage was obviously specifically shot to capture some big Angela Lansbury moments. Speaking of which, ALL of "Rose's Turn would have been fantastic to see and hear, but the footage here contains approximately the last minute and a half, where we get to see how deftly she handles the breakdown. No dragged tempos, no vocal indulgences, and no overdoing of the self-analysis aspect of this legendary 11 o'clock number. It's doubtful that Rose, given her persona and the time she lives in, would get too intellectually thoughtful about feelings of bitterness and regret. Lansbury, not unlike what we hear on Ethel Merman's original cast recording, plows right through - plows, not rushes. Is she emotional and thinking back on some key moments in her life? Absolutely. But, not in the modern sense. She's able to touch on events and feelings, but in an angry, frustrated, stream of consciousness way ("it wasn't for me, Herbie ... and if it wasn't for me, then where would you be, Miss Gypsy Rose Lee?" - thank you Sondheim for that perfect writing). I saw four out of five of the Broadway revival Roses: Angela Lansbury (1974), Tyne Daly (1990), Bernadette Peters (2003) and Patti LuPone (2008). I was not yet born when the original production starring Ethel Merman ran. On the page here on RU-vid where they do "who sang such and such the best," it was something like "who handled the final parts of Rose's Turn best" competition. I wrote up some thoughts about the various Roses (including Rosiland Russell in the 1962 film, and Bette Midler in the 1993 TV movie). Here follows a cut and paste of what I said about Angela Lansbury:

It takes guts to step into Ethel Merman’s shoes. For Angela Lansbury they were a perfect fit.

I saw her in this back in 76. She was a powerhouse - and it was a matinee performance. And her "Everything's Coming Up Roses," which is sadly not here, was so driven. She knocked it out of the ballpark! Saw her in Sweeney, too. Incredible. So much that was always going on there with her. So strong and assured.

What a joy! What a treasure. Your RU-vid channel means so much to me. I could write an essay but suffice to say that as a child of the 60s and 70s in California, who was inexplicably drawn to musical theatre (no one else in my family cared and some were aggressively dismissive) I could only dream of seeing such footage. I now teach youth musical theatre to young people. Some have made it to Broadway, film, Tony, Emmy, Golden Globe & Grammy nominations. What I am most proud of is that so many, who don't go into it professionally are bitten by the musical theatre bug. Take their kids to see shows and have such a respect for performers. I will definitely show this clip to my students in the fall (some already are familiar with the score from "Gypsy" via La Merm), and who knows may some of these "kids these days" will subscribe to this channel?

I had the privilege of (sneaking) going back stage in London and meeting her - and getting her autograph on the program. Still have it

a wonderful reminder of how brilliant ms lansbury was in musical theater, and how she could make a role like this so uniquely and completely her own, especially when it had been so firmly associated with and almost indelibly stamped by the personality of the likes of ethel merman. for myself, i was lucky enough to have seen ms lansbury in "mame" when I was about 10 years old, while she was touring in a revival of the show in the 70's, something that i'll never forget. goodbye, little yellow bird, r.i.p.

I saw this, I still have the souvenir program and the Playbill she signed. I still say it's the best show I ever saw.

I had the thrill of seeing her as a 10-year-old boy in 1976. At that point, the only thing I knew about Angela was, the my aunt had taken me to see Bedknobs and Broomsticks in 71 because I have won a coloring contest that allowed me to get two free tickets to see the movie. I had a very cool aunt who always tried to broaden my horizons. If I was enthralled in something, she would do everything in her power to make it more exciting by articles or finding out information about the person or movie I was into. Since he had taken from you, I love that movie and was fascinated by Angela. So…now 1976, I remember standing in the front yard on a hot August day, and she said, “hey guess what? Angela Lansbury (Miss Price) is appearing in Chicago right now in a play called Gypsy!” I remember my mom and her friend Barb were in the yard smoking and my aunt asked my mom if I could fly to Chicago. Surprisingly my mom said, YES! Was she drunk? Who knows. Anyway, next thing I know my mom is upstairs packing me a little suitcase and we were driven to the Quad City Airport and flying off to Chicago! We arrived, checked into the Drake Hotel and took a cab to the Opera House to see “Gypsy” as far as I remember that was my first big it was pretty memorable all the dressed up people on the huge, beautiful theater. Then suddenly the lights went off and Angela and cast were on stage. I remember being overwhelmed. The show was amazing!!! I remember thinking she doesn’t look exactly like she did in “Bedknobs,” but then as a kid you don’t realize people change in looks over a few years.

The ending of this revival is so heartbreaking the way angela portrays rose to me is the best having this childlike tantrum and yet the warmth of a mother clinging to desperation and recognition. A well deserved tony
