Angelina Jolie (Unbroken), Christopher Nolan (Interstellar), Richard Linklater (Boyhood), Mike Leigh (Mr. Turner), Bennett Miller (Foxcatcher) and Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game) discuss their new films, open up about ethics, fears, family and what drives them: "We're all kind of control freaks, right?"
"It's an impulse to tell stories, to make things up, to get people doing things," Mike Leigh, director of "Mr Turner", explains about film directing. Rookie director Angelina Jolie shares that her passion for directing came to her accidentally and occurred because she wanted to "protect the material" of the script she wrote for the now motion-picture film, "In the Land of Blood and Honey", in which she made her directorial debut. When asked if the critically-acclaimed film, "Foxcatcher", changed director Bennett Miller, he said, "It broke me." Miller explains that the two hour and 14 minute film that audience has seen was once an over four hour cut before it was edit meticulously for a period of one year. Richard Linklater, who filmed "Boyhood" for a span of 12 years, explains that the film making was a "marathon"and a "gift." "I have a very understanding wife, you need to have a partner that really understands what you're doing and going through because you become extremely focused on yourself and what you're doing," said "Imitation Game" director Morten Tyldum when asked what kind of toll directing takes on his personal life. "If i really believe that what I'm doing is going to give the audience the best experience possible, I think that comes across [through the film]" Christopher Nolan, director of Interstellar, said about his sense of responsibility while filmmaking.

I get it that the interviewer has to keep the conversation going with new questions but it's really frustrating when one of the directors is saying something interesting and he just interrupts. I like the more natural conversations that the directors carry and I enjoy their questions more than the mundane questions the interviewer asks.

I hate to say this, but they're getting worse every year. A few years ago, they used to be over and hour with no interruption. Now they're under 50 minutes, they keep interrupting the flow of the conversation to show us clips we've already seen AND the interviewer keeps interrupting.
@b82b14
@b82b14 9 лет назад
I think the main reason is that the purpose of this roundtable is not really to have meaningful discussion about filmmaking, but more for them to create snippet 1-2 minute videos which can be shared on blogs and facebook. It is kind of sad, but I see where they are coming from
@speedy3702

Angelina jolie seems to be the only person to be able to honestly answer the question about ethics and raises some great points in doing so. I think it was super brave of her to join this round table being a new director, and it was refreshing to hear her influences behind film making - her reasons were quite noble and you can definitely tell that she is telling these stories because she feels that it is her purpose to do so. Maybe it is because she is new to directing that her views are almost idealistic but I do think part of it is because she is a women and a mother and that she is able to bring an alternate perspective, one which hollywood often seriously lacks.

He's hands down the best blockbuster director currently working, maybe ever. But I don't really consider that accolade to be one of a great filmmaker. He's ambitious and great at spectacle and effects, but not when it comes to writing, characters, or emotional resonance. If I could I'd have him make nearly every disaster and epic action flick but not much more.

Richard Linklater and Mike Leigh's comments are the best of this roundtable. I think they're the only remarkable filmmakers there: writers and directors who actually have something to say about the everyday life of ordinary people, and the world we live in. The best moment is when Leigh acknowledges Boyhood as an achievement at 18:30: "Wow, that is such a great idea. No one could beat that."

no - angelina jolie is a perfect example of how money talks in providing short cuts into elusive fields so long as you're famous enough without ever having to do an inch of work in actually bothering to learn anything required for the skill set or having a modicum of natural talent, just so you can get a PR and ego boost, while thousands of hardworking, genuinely passionate, talented female directors are frozen out because they aren't a famous name. jolie has no talent for directing. her "projects" have been terrible and colossal money bleeding flops. what's worse is she has NO impetus to learn - they're vanity projects and nothing more. just listen to her speak........she's not talking about directing. she's barely talking about anything! long, incoherent ramblings about her children's fire and our inner strength...until mike has enough and straight up comes out with, "yeah, but are you a good *director* though?" her presence here is embarrassing.

There are a few interruptions that were made in this roundtable that are unforgivable. Richard Linklater expressing about breaking new ground in film and approaching new subjects conveying life and inner life was interrupted Stephen asking an amateurish question about a whether they would pull a gun on an actor. Infuriatingly poor timing you could even see Mike Leigh getting frustrated. This is why I prefer the actors studio for in depth conversation and there should be a directors studio or just get a new presenter.

few tips. Do 90 minute interviews. Do it with three guests. Plan for a few questions to start it off but let the CONVERSATION flow. Have some backup questions ready when the conversations comes to a still. Have a theme within a theme. So invite directors but have a theme you are going to talk about, like the collaboration with the writers of the scripts or book they are adapting. So you can do more roundtable director interviews with other directors and other themes but still about their new project. Then have a more warm setting. Like a living room that is straight out of a movie. Build it as a set but on location would be better with a view over LA. Do less cutting. More close ups. Get B Roll from their projects so you can cut with it. POINT is we want the learn more about these people so let them do the talking and do not interrupt!

I love listening to Linklater talk about films and how he started, especially when you have people like Nolan talking about they started at 8 but Richard didnt start til early 20's. I suppose I can relate more to Linklater in that respects. Still, I dont get the hate on Nolan, he has made some outstanding films, and even though Interstellar got some hate I really enjoyed it
@MM-hk4pb
@MM-hk4pb 4 года назад
As soon as a director like him (who is acclaimed but moves through the "mainstream" arena) starts getting even more popular, an increasing amount of people start being nitpicking because they may have preconceived notions about things that have a wider appeal. Nolan has had his flaws but so have every director in history but some folks can be more strict when evaluating projects with a broader audience and that are supposed to be good films although they don’t see them as such for many reasons (as the aforementioned ones) like with Nolan’s films. Now, Interstellar was praised but yes, there was a certain amount of criticism which a few have valid points but others were far stretched. Anyways, this won’t change in the foreseeable future because humans always tend to find something to be complaining about, not matter if it’s good or bad. I mean, Parasite was considered "underrated" but as soon as it got more recognition like from the Oscars, it began to become "overrated" amongst some people. And on and on it goes.

Okay, I'm at 33:26 now and all of the directors just turned on the moderator when he bluntly interrupts Bennett Miller when he's in the middle of laying down the philosophy that drives his sense of ethics when it comes to representing historical characters. Seriously, let me moderate this panel. I'm frustrated because these roundtables, generally, are so well produced and moderated and the discussion is so lively and interesting. It's a conversation, not a Q&A where we have to make sure we get through 40+ people lined up at two different microphones.
