Beautiful reaction Jesse. I love the detail you add that many of us wouldn’t know. I really love this cover. Obviously she could never do what Beyoncé does with this track, but I am biased because that is my favourite Bey track ever. That said Angelina’s cover is beautiful. The resonance in her voice in that low register and the rises that don’t tip over the peak which is clever, combined with the simplicity is so impressive. The sound is so clean and I love how the strings come and go, which supports her voice but never challenges, especially in the subtler parts, so she shines in the best way possible. The ‘destroyed part’ at the end with the half back breath throughout the vibrato, allowing those minute breaks in.

My guess is that the piano and cello are live, the strings have been added, I think Angelina singing it live in that huge church, would have echoed too much, so singing is studio done. But I could be completely wrong!

Amazing performance that didn't even need the instruments.

I'd assume that this was prerecorded as well. E.g. I think you hear backing vocals late in the song, and others commented that there would be a violin in additon to the cello. There was also a violin on stage when the song was presented at the "Jesse & Friends" in LA. Here Angelina is wearing the same dress as at the "The Others Songs" Events of May 20th, and there on stage was also only a cello for strings, and by the looks (though there was no good closeup) it could have been the same cello player as here. The audio tracks were ready 3 weeks prior to the realease, the they were available for preorder, and a 90 second "preview" was available at Apple Music. So while I initially thought that this here was likely recorded before, when Angelina was in in London at the end of March, I changed somewhat my mind, as the 2nd music video excerpts for a version with more instrumentals was obviously not recorded in March but then likely in May (and also in London, at the Brick Lane Station Park),. Though that music video is not released yet, overall, I thus find it more likely now that this was also filmed around May 20th, thus after the audio versions were put to distribution.

I agree with you that the song must've been prerecorded in that church. You hear more instruments than are shown. The cellist is seen playing differently to what we hear. In any case, it's a spectacular performance! It was recorded for Toby's Piano Diaries where he replays his co-written and produced hit songs with now-famous artists with younger dynamic singers of today, like Angelina Jordan. Toby produced a different slightly pop version with Angelina for her, also released on the same day. It's on RU-vid and Spotify.

I agree that this is probably pre-recorded. There's too many instruments missing in the background. However, the vocal may have been done on location.

Nice reaction to this wonderful performance! Very interesting comments. At first I thought this was a studio recording but after listening to a video of a snippet of "All Of Me", another Toby Gad song obviously recorded live in the same church, I think this was recorded live as well. The string pads and vocal compression were added in post. First, I don't think you would carefully XY the piano just for a video, but the key to me is the reverb delays in this room which had a distinct and lovely soft echo peak besides the decay. The way she can go up all the way to big and then set it down so smooth and gentle like she just floats you back down. Then you may get one of those Angelina only runs as she sets you down. Difficult to describe really. Can't wait for you to do "When We Were Young" from the Vegas concert. Make sure you use the one on James Thiel's site, (his and BiGAngieFan) are the places to go for the concert. I lived for the chorus on her younger version and she outdoes herself here. Joey Farr has an extended version on his site that has the 2 min band Bond intro, her entrance, and her greeting to the crowd afterwards. I’m thinking this is the studio recording and the church is just a backdrop for the video. There is also a video she posted on instagram about a week ago of her performing All Of Me at this church. That does seem to be live and she mentions the church’s acoustics. I don’t hear the same acoustics in this If I Were a Boy video. Toby Gad cowrote this song with a new artist at the time, BC Jean. They were working on songs together for her debut album. Jean recorded a demo with Gad on guitar but the song was rejected by the record label. After the record deal fell through he marketed the songs they had written together to established artists. Beyoncé liked If I Were a Boy and recorded it with Gad coproducing it. Gad recently recorded an album called Piano Diaries which includes new versions of songs he was involved with. He asked several artists to perform on the album including Angelina. Last month they performed this song live at Hotel Cafe in Los Ángeles. On May 20 they attended an event at the Palladium in London the celebrated songwriters. Toby brought the young artists to perform with him. Angelina and he performed this song at this event as well as at the IVORS Awards a few days later. Toby’s Piano Diaries was released on May 31 as well as this song as a single. At the Hotel Cafe performance Gad announced that he and Angelina were also working on new material including the song Bad Valentine which they wrote together. He said the new song was being released in a couple months which would mean probably sometime in July. No update, however, on a release date for her album which has apparently been complete for quite a while.

My ears are picking up a violin track that was added to this recording, recall that the performance at the Hotel Cafe in LA had piano, cello, and violin. Great reaction as usual.

Her insanely unique ability to bring a low register that is able to add that needed olive to complete the perfect martini is what mesmerizes the listener in this presentation. Her 'highs' are not overdone, as most artists would feel compelled to do, so when she does bring them to the fore they have much more concentrated impact to anyone listening. Then, when she sprinkles in her 'signature style' releases of breathy whispers my thoughts go back to who she learned them from, the great Billie Holiday.

I have listened to this song some 40 times now, multiple venues, and each time it gets better, especially this performance in church with the strings, exquisitely beautiful. I love the clarity of her voice. She really shines when her voice is the leading instrument. I prefer her singing acapella, followed with just a piano or guitar. This is nice because her voice remains clear and isn't drowned out by other musical instruments.

To launch this in a church is a testament to the coming “Age of Angelina”. I’m sure I’m just one of many many viewers that always like her videos and those of her reactors but I rarely comment. Experiences like this AJ video induce me to comment between the tears.

Toby has been writing songs for others for many years. With Piano Diaries, he selected eight of his most popular and chose eight gifted but lesser known artists to create the album. Matching AJ with this song is obviously a stroke of genius. The two them are also collaborating on more original music, including a song called "Bad Valentine", already in the recording stage.

Best argument why the vocal track at least is not prerecorded? AJ really really sucks at lipsynching. :) And it kind of makes sense actually -- her jazz sensibilities have her always experimenting and singing things just a bit different each time. Must be hell on a lipsynch.

I'd actually like to hear her collaborate with Keith Urban on an AJ-version/arrangement of his hit 'Stupid Boy' with his guitar work and vocals too. I know, everyone thinks he's 'just' Country...but I don't agree. That man's a MUSICIAN and singer, and songwriter, and a GREAT collaborator. I really think their voices together on his song would be truly exceptional, and I suspect her re-arrangement would be EPIC. And we'd get to hear him do an even BETTER guitar solo, since he clearly feeds of the magic of his collaborations with others. This song side A that song side B. Quadruple platinum I'll bet. There's a LOT of young (and older) women out there who've been frustrated, disheartened, and more than a tad upset at just how many of us Stupid Boys they've run into as they continue to hope to make the life they deserve and to truly thrive. She shared a bit of John Legend's All Of Me on her social medias, filmed in these settings, that she said they recorded as they were jamming in the church, phone audio but it sounded very good (and obviously it was awesome). So They had everything there, I think, to make a quality recording. There is obviously an additional layer in the mix. So it's not "just" the live recording. But isn't she perfect? ¡🥰!

Thanks for your insights. I trust your judgement on live vs. prerecorded, but I have to say it looks spot on to me. There's definitely some additional tracks because I don't think the piano and cello could produce such full sound towards the end. But I'm no expert, so who knows.

Her performance at the Hotel Cafe is up at James Thiel channel and endorsed by Toby. Not sure if Toby provided or produced it but it’s clearly professional quality, whoever put it together. It’s well worth its own reaction, imo, as you get the interactions amongst and between the musicians and audience. There’s a pretty good quality fan filmed video of Bad Valentine which I’ve watched a few guilt-free times cuz I’m an angel so there’s zero chance that I will watch the official vids any less than I would have otherwise. The last one will give you new respect for her range even at 12! The View one is the best sound of her age 8 videos! The Feeling Good shows her early stage presence with TV, A Crowd, And a Band!

I heard a snippet of her singing "All of me" by Toby Gad as co-writer with John Legend in this church and then you hear the church-sound quite clear. I do not get same feel of them using in this song. I might be wrong, but this song she did perfect imo. Love from Norway!

I don't think this was recorded live. The only obvious clue that I detected is at 01:59 on the word "Me". She opens her mouth before you hear the end of the word "Me". I'm nitpicking that way, sorry 😉
