One of my favorite encounters with an angel involved a quest to track down a serial killer who was seemingly murdering random people in the street. We discovered that the killer was an astral deva who had been forcefully summoned by a wizard to serve as his cohort, but had been able to resist the binding ritual and slew the wizard in retaliation. However, the ritual had robbed the astral deva of his memories but did not strip him of his strong desire to destroy evil and spread good. So when the astral deva found his way to a city, he took the form of an old human man and used his divine senses to detect people with an evil alignment and strike them down whenever he caught them alone. Unfortunately, the process of losing his memories and living among mortals eventually took its toll on the astral deva, and he began to kill anyone he saw commit a crime, whether it be murder or simple theft. We eventually had to kill the astral deva so his soul could return to Celestia, but it was the only encounter that a GM ever threw at me that involved an angel as an antagonist that felt refreshing.

Descent Into Avernus has revealed that Zariel was in fact a Solar before her fall. There’s a flashback scene with her and she uses the Solar stat block. She was one of the 24 and a steward of Lathander.

Angels are rad. I had an Encounter in the Curse of Strahd, where the party attacked The Abbot, who was a Deva. Whoo-boy. They had a ROUGH time of it!

In my DND session we ended up finding a huge hard boss. We had just started, until our rogue out a flask that can summon any monster to fight for him. With a d100, he rolled a 96 and summon a solar. The fight literally ended in two rounds.

I have a fallen archangel NPC in my homebrewed world and she serves Atsel, the first goddess or the corrupted goddess and she is her head general and is the 3rd final boss in my "The Awoken" campaign and is really powerful and interestingly she has normal human skin, pure white hair, whites if her eyes are black, has giant black wings, and is of course amazingly beautiful but she or any other god will be as powerful as Atsel the first goddess... Sorry about my little tangint there.

Was in an evil campaign once, party tried opening a portal to the abyss in the temple of the sun god Pyrion, didn't go the way we had hoped. Ended up facing a Solar, 10 feet tall, blazing with light and fire. Getting anywhere near the Solar would cause holy fire damage, looking at the Solar caused temporary blindness (imposing disadvantage) yeah... We didnt last, decided it would be best to make new characters and live peaceful lives as farmers and fishermen.

personally, rather than being created by the gods themselves, I'd like to imagine that the Angels were born from Mount Celestia itself, with a significant number of them choosing to serve various detiies of their own volition while others simply serve the ideals of Order or Goodness in of themselves. edit: I'm also imagining an angel who in one moment is slaughtering followers of evil, mortal and infernal alike, and in another is gently petting someone's pet dog or playing catch with a group of children. also I find it difficult to believe that more than a relatively small minority of angels are arrogant and prideful to the extreme after presumably living for millennia and witnessing countless of their kind prove theiir own race's fallibility.

Ah I guess I didn't bring it back up. So 2 things on Zariel being a Planetar and not a Solar. 1) It's said there are 24 specific Solars and I am pretty sure if she was one it would have been explicitly stated since that is kinda a big deal, being that they are immensely powerful and incorruptible and finite in number. 2) Her current power level is on par with a Solar angel. Since her instatement as an Archduke should have given her a big power boost I think the fact that a Solar could go toe-to-toe with her as of now is another indicator she used to be a planetar. I guess a 3rd point is Solars don't get involved with stuff very often and Zariel was heavily involved in the day to day of the blood war. Not a very Solar level duty if you ask me. :)

@@Thedungeoncast hmm on the one hand, she has flying sword like Solars On the other hand, I like the idea that she was always bald, and it's just the skin color that changed from that turquoise to the coal-grey/black she's sporting now

Angel tends to be used interchangeably with celestial. There are a lot of weak celestials and the 4e celestials exist amongst side the original angels in Forgotten Realms. The Devas, Planetars and solars have their origins rooted in Mount Celest specifically.

And angels in judeo Christian religion are based on the titans of early Greek religions in fact a lot of the Titans are depicted with having two four or six wings

it's my understanding that in Dungeons & Dragons the devils and the angels are technically on the same side of the blood War the side of wall demons and the Yugaltho are on the side of Chaos the blood War is not good versus evil but law versus chaos

Love the show guys (RU-vid traditional) but there’se a couple things I just got to say: 1) Deeeee-Vaaaaaa :) 2) remember angels even in the Bible for the most part come in groups so you probably would be dealing with multiple angels if you wanted to be more thematic. One talking to you then another just standing there just looking at you funny since your mouth is open and you are quivering looking at your certain doom for smacking the serving girl’s ass.? 3) More better angels. I love them but D&D does too little with them. And NEVER has properly stated them. Like they don’t need food or drink but can drown. So DMs should always augment them slightly. And most importantly I need my celestial episode guys. :)

Lol I know its pronounced Deeva. I think I addressed it in episode. it is just one of those things where you start out mispronouncing the word and never stop because the original pronunciation sounds wrong to you. We will do a Celestials episode eventually :)

There are three that I can think of that are truly omni those would be the lady of pain, the Mad God and the over God AŌ but for the most part they don't have Angels or clerics or paladins were any worshippers really at all full except for maybe the Mad God I know he's worshipped as the elemental eye and the Elder one and I know the lady of pain has a handful of worshipers but I don't think she has any clerics or paladins

Katherine Montgomery Probably not. The weakest angel is a decent challenge for a 10th level party, there's no way a 1st character could kill could take one in a fight unless they were, like, part of an army that took the angel out
