Forging a feather from a piece of angle iron is a fun blacksmithing project. Using the forged feather to create an interesting wall hook adds even more interest.

Thanks for this, John. I discovered your channel after several years of “brute force and ignorance” blacksmithing. Wow! I just finished making this feather hook. You certainly know your stuff and inspire beginners and intermediate smiths. Thank you.

A knife is a tool, not a weapon. I think he avoids them because there are hundreds of blade Smith's on RU-vid and he is a blacksmith. While he might make a knife as needed (like the draw knife) there are guys who only make knifes. I am glad to learn hooks and bottle openers

I made one of these yesterday! Thanks for the inspiration. I drilled my 1/16" holes through the V from the inside before I did anything. It gave me a great point to drill the screw holes once it was shaped. Keep them coming!

Nice feather I watch your videos often only just saw this one, the spine makes it hard to keep your drill centred but if you drill from the back you can most times get a better alignment. Tony Artistic Blacksmith South Australia

Beautiful hook! I have often wondered how to make a feather; i would never have thought of angle iron! I appreciate the fact that you gave an alternative that would correct the drilling placement error. I often have my drill bit slide off to one side and I can’t tell you how many projects I’ve ruined that way-so frustrating! Now I know: start with a 1/16th inch pilot hole!

I've run into that frustrating hole drilling situation too. I think in this case, with the rib or quill up the middle, I would drill from the back side to keep the drill from sliding off the centre of the arc. A gentle countersink afterword on the front side should eliminate any burring. Great video and a great usage of an old piece of scrap. Thanks.

Another great video. I’ve been making my feather trinkets out of spring steel and have sold a few of them. I never thought about using angle iron, duh! 🤦‍♂️ I love the fact that you used tempering colors for yours, as I do with mine. If you get the whole feather in the blue range, and wire brush the edges while it’s still hot, the newly brushed edges will come in straw gold. So it’s blue in the center and gold on the edges. It’s so beautiful! Feel free to use that trick and see for yourself 👍 I love your inspiring videos John! Keep up the great work sir.

John that was great! I like making thing from drops. At work I ran a laser and plasma cutting machine and they let me have any drops I wanted!!!! blacksmiths heaven (and the broken saw blades too) By the way when I drill angle like that I do it from the back side it helps keep the bit in center.
