In our second angles video (201), we dive deep into box control and look at NHL goalies and how they apply box control in their games. We also look at whether Coach Steve believes in the the Geography of the Ice and how NHL goalies have perfect angles even on white pond ice.
And a very common mistake young goalie make when playing the rush chance.
At the end there is a tragic puck machine injury!.

I used this "tapping off" technique last night for the first time in a game. Held the best team in the league to two goals. I like it!! Thanks, steve. I'm sold!! :)

Great video Coach! I love the Gallagher show at the end. Watching the kiddos heads flinch as they get sprayed by the watermelon was hilarious. Those pucks were moving! Thanks for sharing the technical info about box control. I never realized how important tapping off was. I always thought it was just a goalie tick or some strange habit guys had. It is really nice to be informed and it really does make sense. Thanks again for sharing.

The geography of the ice used to properly throw me off in the old Ayr arena. I swear it was about 10 feet narrower than my home rink, the lines on the boards were all on slightly different angles and that definitely caused problems for any goalie that wasn't "tapping off" and playing their angles based on the board/ice markings. The guys doing the lines in Strathroy sound like the guys doing my local barn's lines now... I too have a tendency to "close" my trapper into my chest like Raycroft did, and I hadn't even realized it until I filmed my play. I miss the old puck machine we had at the store, we'd demo gear and launch pucks at each other for hours after close. It was all fun until someone got a puck in the pills, then it was hilarious.

It is funny how many old school rinks just winged it. Belmont arena was about 30 % smaller than regulation and the angles were never even close.

Great Video coach. As an older beer league goalie I have always played the zones using landmarks as you mentioned. Now that I am coaching youth hockey I hear you mention tapping off allot. Maybe you could share a video on proper tapping off technique to gain your angles or how to instruct young goaltenders on that technique. Keep up these great videos!

noahjay2002 No crap as a kid we had a Zam guy 65 years old fully lit every day regardless of time. We had the old school zam with open hopper and conveyor running over it dropping off snow. Well one day he hits a post peg that was screwed in the cement through the ice that he didn’t see. Went right over the steering wheel head first into the snow holder on the zam, feet flailing in the air, as the conveyor thingy kept grinding away.. I thought for sure we were going to see the Zam eat him...

Great tips! Any advice for maintaining your angle on d to d passes? I tend to lose my angle on these plays.
@FutureProGoaltending
@FutureProGoaltending 2 года назад
Stay pretty deep in the paint until the threat becomes real. Then get to top of crease. Staying above the crease on distance passes is recipe for losing angle.

Love your videos. My son discovered a passion for ice hockey goal tending. The thing is I don't know much about ice hockey, so I go around RU-vid to get some info he can use (he's 8 years old). I understood everything in this video apart from "tapping off". Do you mind explaining what that exactly means?
@FutureProGoaltending
@FutureProGoaltending 4 года назад
Vincent Regis it refers to simply lightly touching the post with the shaft of your stick as you begin to challenge. This keeps you centered without having to look at the post. On the glove side you tap off with your glove

My son would ask me how to relax, how to stay focused. I told him to stand in the middle of the net and use his goalie stick to sweep the crease clean by starting in the center where he was standing and moving the snow against the posts. I told him he could do this while watching the play, and if it comes back to his end, wait until they cross the blue line, then move out from the center of the net staying square to the person who has the puck.

@FutureProGoaltending

Starting with shoulders on cross bar as line rush approaches your blue line. Then depending on what side you either lightly tap glove on glove side post and step out to top of crease. Or on blocker side, lightly tap with shaft of stick and step out well positioned on blocker angle.

More great information. Thanks, Steve. Quick question: would playing the rush inside>out be similar to the "red line, blue line" mental cue that Ben Scrivens explained in his Players Tribune piece? After I read that, I changed my approach to playing the rush to not even thinking of committing to an angle until the puck carrier had crossed the red line.

Main Street Chiropractic & Laser Pain Relief, LLC Waunakee sorry, just lightly tapping the post with the shaft of your stick before stepping out to challenge. On the glove side angle you just do the same thing but use your glove. Please download my free ebook listed in video description. It goes into this in great depth.

What does it mean to tapping off?
@FutureProGoaltending
@FutureProGoaltending 2 года назад
When a goalie starts back on the goal line as the rush develops they will tap one of the posts lightly without looking at the post and step forward on the angle facing the shooter/ puck. This helps position themselves properly in the middle of the net. You use the stick shaft to tap off on blocker side attacks and your trapper on glove side attacks. If you watch any high end goalie, this is always done.

Given the 3D space is there any reason for adult size goalies to be farther then ankle on the top of the crease?
@FutureProGoaltending
@FutureProGoaltending 4 года назад
Ryan A not generally... however if you get a ringer with higher experience you may need a little more if they are in a shooting situation. For the average bender tip of crease would be good. I’m digging into situational positioning in tomorrow’s video.
@ryana3679
@ryana3679 4 года назад
FutureProGoaltending I always thought the rule of thumb was go out as far as you would for a slap shot from the point. If you get beat by a slapper from the point when you’re ankles on the crease then something’s wrong or your small as heck.
@FutureProGoaltending
