The Anglia Knight is over 100 years old and was commissioned originally by the King of the Netherlands.
The king was a patron of a society called The Falcon Club, which met once a year to compete in horse races, falconry and other sports.
In 1850, the King felt so confident that he would win the contest that he commissioned a trophy from a London firm of silversmiths. The trophy was modelled on the statue of Richard Coeur de Lion, which stands outside the House of Parliament, but it was made to represent the Black Prince.
However, to the King's dismay it was won by an Englishman and brought back to Britain where it remained in the possession of the victor's family until 1959 the year Anglia first went on the air.
A famous firm of Bond Street jewellers and goldsmiths (Aspreys) was commissioned to make certain modifications including the pennant on the lance and the magnificent trophy became the famous symbol of Anglia Television.
The Anglia Knight is made of sterling silver and weighs over 700 ounces. The detailed work was hand-chased by a superb craftsman.
The music that is heard when the knight is on air is part of Handel's Water Music, specially arranged for Anglia Television by Sir Malcolm Sargent.
Thanks to Steve Hearn and Adrian Ruck

That was a great station logo - I was at uni in Norwich in the late 70s and was active in the student tv service, I remember visiting the Anglia studios on Agricultural Hall Plain at the end of Castle Meadow and seeing the knight in the foyer. If I remember rightly, the UEA Audio Visual Centre inherited Anglia's (or possibly BBC East's) old black-and-white cameras when they converted to colour in the early 70s - I remember using them to produce programmes on Monday evenings, three of the cameras had zoom lenses and one had a turret with four different lenses which rotated when you wanted a closer shot!

TV from when I was a kid. Tales of the Unexpected and other shows from ITV regions across the country felt like television from far away lands. We had Midlands (later, Central) from the Oxford transmitter and Southern (later, TVS) from the Hannington transmitter. On a Saturday they both showed CHiPS - but always different episodes and always one was after the other for some scheduling reason - two CHiPS on Saturday :-)

I remember this ident appearing on our TV screen several times a night before programmes such as About Anglia (local early-evening ITV news programme for the east of England), when I were a lad growing up in mid-Lincolnshire. Then one day ITV, in their wisdom, announced that our local TV transmitter (Belmont, on top of the Lincs Wolds) was to switch from transmitting Anglia programmes to Yorkshire TV ones, effectively making us 'part of Yorkshire' rather than part of East Anglia. Lots of people were very unhappy about the planned switch -- but ITV pressed ahead nevertheless. From then on we only saw this knight before occasional networked Anglia programmes such as Sale of the Century and Survival (which I never watched anyway) -- and About Anglia was replaced by Yorkshire TV's Calendar, which seemed to be all about Leeds and Harrogate. It's great to see the Anglia knight again.

HOW the "powers that be" make their decisions with regard to regions and transmitter allocation is beyond me!. In early 70's they opened a relay transmitter at GUILDFORD, Surrey.Everyone presumed it would be a relay of HANNINGTON and give us Southern regional news and programming. In fact they directed the relay's receiving aerials to CRYSTAL PALACE, a transmitter that is so powerful that we, out here in Aldershot, could already pick it up in watchable quality on a coat-hanger!!. Being Crystal Palace the programmes and local news sent to Guildford is all about Bow, Wapping, Hounslow etc, nothing on North East Hampshire, which is hardly a surprise. They could, at the very least, given The Guildford transmitter's location, have SPLIT the transmitter so maybe ITV could relay the south and BBC relay London. They have done this elsewhere, particularly in Kent and Southern Essex.

This was found in a shop in London by Anglia tv boses to be use by Anglia tv on opening night on 27th October 1959 and use for 28 years until it was replaced by computer graphics Lambeth stand alone Anglia flag. information can be found on Wikipedia.
