Fascinating offering and analysis. However, we must be careful, and not loose, in defining who the Anglo Normans were in the 11th century. They were culturally Norman French, Catholic and had no sense of an "English" identity. After all, English identity, such as it was in the 11th century and before battle of Hastings in 1066, was exclusive to the Germanic tribes, the Angles, Saxons and Jutes who ruled Anglesland, competing for territory with Norse "mini kings" and settlements. The Franco Normans were a "tribe" unto themselves, and a known quantity for Gaelic chiefs through their extensive links with the Continent, and the presence of Irish monks and trade, in relation to monasteries and colleges of learning across Europe. The hybrid of Franco Norman and Germanic tribes fused to create the semblance of an "English" identity in the late 14th century. Keep up the fantastic work. Beir bua.
