You’re right. Anyone has the opportunity to educate themselves on anything they don’t understand. There are historians who can educate you on any ethnic group if there is something you don’t understand. That’s why people do who really want to understand.
I’m 71 and to marginalize any one group is bigotry. I don’t care what people think of my age. It would be rather petty of me to worry about ‘’white peoples problems’’ when we’ve seen what people of color have been through and are still experiencing. Grow up. 😂. Keep the faith. Increase the peace 🕊️
I'm a boomer, and I'm black. I am in no way offended by being called a boomer. There is no equivalency between being called a boomer and being called the "N" word, period!
How about the other N word. That's a closer comparison. That word used to be acceptable until it was imbued with negative connotations through common usage. Now, if I called you a ne**o, you'd be offended. The same thing has happened to the term boomer. It is an insult and unless you are talking with a census taker, you are being denigrated whether you're aware of it or not. It's like those old Blacks who didn't mind being called negr**s because it was "just a word that means black in Spanish". Well, it's not that anymore and "boomer" doesn't just mean people of a certain age anymore either..
@@petem.3719the term Boomer has never had anyone stripped of their rights, had them drug down the street, beaten to death, Hung from a tree or a number of other things. It has never gotten anybody murdered, shot, spit on, r*ped, or falsely imprisoned.
"Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never harm me". That's what I live by...you can call me anything you want and I'll just say..ok..😁
And THAT is what you call them out on, not their age. I know a lot of people in that age group who feel alienated due to the OK Boomer epithet, and they don't want to be connected with the way MAGAs behave. They are very liberal, but are lumped in with a really bad group. Categorize by their BEHAVIOR, not their age.
Proud until you learn what 99% of the people who call you a boomer are really saying about you. You suppose Jesse feels proud to be called a crayon muncher because some Marines are stupid? Should the word "Marine" be used synonymously with dummy, the way boomer is used synonymously with racist arsehole?
I'm in my 70s - yup - a boomer. This means I was taught the drama routine was inappropriate. "I'm offended,' used to play victim as a deflection is weak and someone of my generation should know better.
I fondly remember those first few months of boomer trending before news & cable media transformed a politics driven meme into generational tribalism. When several commenters in their 60s to 80s knew "ok boomer" was a fine way to disengage with a 50+ maga karen.
Same here. I think that those that actually refer to us this way are in some way jealous, but won't admit it. I am very happy to be a 67 year old boomer.
See, the kids call that "booming" when you use an unfamiliar, and somewhat out of style word like "cohort". My granddaughter would say that was a great example of booming. (My indulgence when conversing with "The Kids" of this era, is to boom bomb them in way they have to use Google to determine their degree of annoyance. I seldom fail, and a few have really learned something not taught by an AI. Annnnd some stick pins in dolls while trying to read an upside down Bible to punish me over my behavior.) "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn!"
I have been called everything but the child of god. Hell. I'll answer to bee. I don't give eff as long as you pay me. Like my ma always said, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me". Don't give words the power over you. Quit being offended by everything.
I'm a boomer and to be honest I have never ever let being called a baby boomer bother me...never even gave it a thought...I don't understand why it would be offensive 🤔
I am a boomer and have no problem with being called a boomer. It is only indicating people born in a certain time period / generation, etc. You did not create it anyway.
To be fair, it has become a negative epithet with ageist connections. It's really not right to be ageist or racist, and Jesse was using it in a derogatory fashion. Both are wrong in my book. Call them out on what they do, not how old they are.
Notice that the word boomer is ONLY used as a catch all pejorative for aholes and trumpers. When was the last time you heard boomer used as NOT an insult or to imply neanderthal political views.
Just because you are not offended doesn't mean that it was not intended to offend. You haven't been listening to teens and 20-somethings. Do it and you'll find out.
@@PaulWhitcomb-ty6md Well, Jesse is the one who said it in this instance and he's not a 20-something. And I'm it, a boomer, and I'm not bothered by it. I am a Boomer and I have no problem with anything you said. I'm not offended because I am the age I am and can't change that. There are stupid, bigoted Boomers just as there are stupid, bigoted people of all ages. It's just a descriptive term about a certain group of people. Get over it!
I'm a gen-xer (which i know many who are now magas & horrible and racist), and there are so many boomers I know that are awesome & pretty cool people. They are still hippies at heart, funny, and a good amount of them play the guitar. They don't take the word Boomer as an insult because they know the type they are referring to... and they can't stand them either 😅 and they know they are not referring to them.😉
I am a boomer. I don't like labels... never did. I protested the Vietnam war. I supported civil rights, women's rights and gay rights. I have never changed my stripes. I've been called all sorts of names and frankly, I don't give a shit. I know who I am and what I stand for. The only thing that even comes close to offending me is bigotry.
I don't agree with Tim. I am a black 72 year old boomer . Some of what some baby boomers think and do I find appauling . I am not ashamed of being called a boomer because by difinition its not an offensive word .
@@micheleconner5083 , there's some truth in that, I've heard younger people with some of the "OK, Boomer.." comments. As a late era boomer, I still boggle that the people who protested for Civil Rights and against the Vietnam War turned around and voted for Ronald Reagan (the beginning of deregulation and union busting, IMO). My daughter and her husband (they're in their 30s) tell their friends I'm "Early Gen X" I'm cool with it. I remember Woodstock, but I was 7yrs old at the time. I certainly didn't go.
@@panamafloyd1469 I am 68, Cherokee/White. Am I a Boomer? I thought Boomers were in the 80s and 90s group of people. I guess I do not know much, at all, because others are saying 70s, also, for The Boomers.
You really don't get out much, do you? It is as offensive as any other slur based on cheap stereotypes based on age or skin color or sex or gender or ... I don't use any of the other terms that reduce people to a stereotype that is disconnected from demonstrated behavior.
To be fair, *many* people do use that word offensively. And people need to learn the difference. That said, I can't see how it was used offensively in these cases, and I'm very aware of when someone is being bigoted (real ageism is a form of bigotry). I've defended boomers from ageist false perceptions many times, and have also defended young people for the same BS.
@@rbaxter286 I think you're conflating things. Terms like boomer and Karen are meant to characterize the behavior of the person they're aimed at. Because it's pointing out things that the person is fully capable of controlling instead of a stereotype based on facts not under their control it's not a slur. A Karen or a Boomer can be any creed any color and yes any age, as long as their exhibiting the behavior described by the term. Ok boomer has been lodged at younger people espousing the same things were better back when only certain people had rights nonsense as well. I've also seen Karen used for men and woman of every shade of the spectrum. Are they terms of endearment? No. However that doesn't immediately make them slurs when they're directed at things fully controllable by the person mentioned.
All that being said, "Boomer" _is_ used as a swearword these days (mostly by a certain generation), in an extremely dismissive and denigrating way. Not saying they are equal by any stretch, of course, without all that baggage the n-word has, but you get, I hope, that someone could take offense.
Same here, but I can't fully agree on liking getting older. Too many aches and pains. Parts that used to work no longer work so well. But I am glad to still be able to walk and enjoy life. I feel that people that refer to us as "boomers" are in some way jealous but won't admit it.
I'm a 65 year old black woman who is NOT offended by the boomer title. But make no mistake the term boomer was used by (some) of the younger generations to mock and disrespect Baby Boomers.I guess it's what you answer to. Welcome Back❤
I'm a boomer. The term does not bother me in and of itself. When it's used by some ignorant youngster to imply that I'm stupid, that bothers me, but only a little. To let something like that bother me would be giving too much power to an idiot.
I didn't see your reply and just said the same thing only not as eloquent and concise as you did. I ramble too much. Thanks for saying it first and better,
I was just about to say that same thing! What kills me is that if it weren't for the Boomers and the Children of the Boomers those young kids would not have half of what technology they have today. Without Bill Gates, a Boomer, would we have had today's computer technology without Microsoft. There seems to be no appreciation of what these young people have. They give no thought for the Boomers who set everything in motion for them.
No, it isn't, so don't be like them. Call out the individual, not the generation/age. I'm gen-x & where I grew up, most boomers are Liberals or real Leftists (not Democrats, other than the Progressive Centrists Dems are Capitalists, aka; Right-wing). I've defended boomers many times, but like not all boomers are ageist or whatever, not all young people are ageist. I think too many Americans (not all, that would nationalist) are just too lazy to type "some" or "many."
Well, it can be used in a derogatory manner. After all, The "R" Word used to be an acceptable term, simply to refer to people who have that affliction. In Syracuse NY there is a facility named "The Syracuse Developmental Center" previously known as "The Syracuse Institute for Feeble-Minded Children" and before that, "The Syracuse Asylum for Idiots". No offense was meant, or taken at the time, but language usage changes and so terms that were once non-offensive can become such.
Is he that ignorant? "Boomer" is a defined time period, just like "Gen X", "Gen Z" and " Millennials". It is just a helpful method to define a time period.
Jesse, I'm a boomer and I've never ever heard that the term is derogatory! We were born after ww2 for gods sake, lots of us. Love your show Jesse, keep bringing it!
I'm gen-x as well, but most boomers I know think that saying is BS. Just like I have since I was three years old and heard someone say that, then tried on a pair of boots and attempted to pull myself up by the straps. That's how at three I discovered that *some* adults are not very intelligent. Notice the word "some." That's a major part of the problem because some, or one could rightly say 'many,' Americans are too lazy to type that word.
@linnetcooke5967 Generation X are those born between 1965 and 1981. Yes there is a Generation Y, they are referred to as Millennials. And after them are Generation Z or known as "Gen Z" (born between 1985 and 2010).
If being referred to as a 'boomer' is just as offensive as the most derogatory name that some folks use for black people, you have a problem and it's NOT being called a 'boomer'....
I am a Boomer. I must have missed the election which made Tim the spokesperson for all Boomers. Hey, Tim--if you're reading this, you need to grow a thicker skin, Boomer.
As a boomer who spends a lot of time on Reddit, I can assure you that a lot of younger people use it as an insult. So pardon me if I am a little sensitive about it.
That’s THEIR problem. They need to be reminded that THEY will be insulted by the current generation of newborns when the time comes in a few decades. What goes around, comes around. Save your breath and stop insulting people. You’re going to be old one day too.
Sixty-five is a bit young to be a boomer. I'm 73. I'm proud to be a boomer. The problem is that there are young people who think that "boomer" means "racist" or "ignorant" or anything that they consider bad. They don't know that it has nothing to do with what you are and only with when you were born. And they don't know all the good things that they enjoy because Boomers went through difficulties to get these things for them.
@@pattibramley3911 You are. Boomers are 1946 to 1964. I squeak in, as I was born in '63. By the end of this year, all boomers will be at least 60 years old, and as old as 78.
Well, I have had the word, boomer leveled at me by maga Republicans in a pejorative way. (Those are the ones who are responding to something I wrote online. ) I'm an aging hippy and third generation Democrat. And I do also get accused of being maga just by my age. So, there's that. ( I'd prefer to be called, boomer than Maga ) If you take a look at footage of the people marching in Charlottesville, shouting, "Jews will not replace us," you won't see boomers. I don't object to you calling me a boomer when you're comparing me to genX or Millennials. Or even if you want to call me an old cat lady, because I'm an old cat lady. But if you are generalizing boomers as being bigots, please leave me ( and pretty much everybody I know ) out. And an acknowledgement that it's possible for anyone ( no, not Black people. An angry response to racism, even if it's "bleached blond, butch body, how'd the rest of that go? I'm old and can't remember 😉 is not racist) of any age to be a racist, would be welcomed.
And I'm gen-x. Age is certainly nothing to fight each other over.😂 Much of the problem seems to be that many Americans are just too lazy to type the word "some" or "many." And that also seems to be more than just Americans who do that.

I only hate when the younger generation uses it to insult my age group. They blame us for everything wrong in their world. The problem is, they assume all Boomers are alike.
Me too. I’m a Boomer and I have NO problem being called that because it’s true. I’m proud to be of that generation. Baby Boomer merely means we were born during a time in history, after WW2 when everybody was having children and big families were the norm. I do not understand why this guy finds it offensive. I think he needs to grow a pair. Maybe he’ll find that offensive too, haha.
I've seen places that count all the way to 1970 as boomers. I was born in 66, my sister 70 - I'm definitely a boomer (still have a landline) and she is absolutely gen x. Personality plays a part.
As a disabled person who has been made fun of and discriminated against I have one piece of advice for this gentleman… thicken up that hide sir, your snowflake is showing.
Well, I'm a 68-year-old black man and a baby boomer and the term boomer does not bother me. The difference between the two words is as far apart as East is from West. It sounds like the man has a few skeletons hidden that he is afraid might resurface.
I’m a Boomer and have no problem being referred to with that word. Unfortunately, I feel that as time goes by, we have all been swept into the same basket of uninformed, uncaring, entitled. We are not all the same, but it seems younger people look at Boomers and discuss us as if we are. I do agree with Tim that many of us are tired of being blamed for everything that’s happened since the days we were born. No one cites how many of us cut our political teeth during the Civil Rights movement or Women’s Equality or environmental issues. These are only a few of the positive things our generation has been involved with. We all aren’t old, decrepit grumps complaining about world and societal changes. Many if us embrace them. I’m tired of being called a drain on society because I receive Social Security and Medicare. I worked for them from the time I was 18. I stopped long enough to have 3 kids and went back to work until I took early retirement to care for a new grandchild whose mother was deaf/blind and contracted Guillian-Barre syndrome. I then helped my daughter when she had a baby 13 weeks premature. I now take care of my husband who has vascular dementia. During this period, we lost our home due to the 2008 debacle and have never fully recovered. Don’t tell me I’m a drain on society! I’ve never received a penny I didn’t work for, but to hear some younger folks, you would think everything was handed to us with little effort on our part. BTW, all 3 of our kids went to college with no help from anyone. My husband and I paid for virtually everything. They graduated college debt free and no government assistance. I like being a Boomer. For the most part, our generation had a great time and did some wonderful things. We also screwed up. Hey, it’s what kids do. Get over it. What I dislike is people thinking we’re all alike. We are as diverse and complicated as any generation before or since. I don’t see Gen X or Millennials as all being the same. Think AOC and Charlie Kirk or MTG and Jasmine Crockett. We are a diverse and exceptional society, political differences aside, and to disparage one group (or in this case , generation) over another does none of us any good. Each generation should build on the accomplishments of the last and forgive the errors as much as possible. We did what we did with the knowledge and technology we had. Name calling, blame, finger pointing doesn’t help anyone. It’s time to start looking at each other as fellow citizens doing the best we can for ourselves, our families, our communities, our country and our planet.
That guy looks like he's in his eighties. That would make him from the Silent Generation. They are the worst of all the Cold War generations. People confuse them for Boomers all the time. Back in the 1960s when Boomers told each other to never trust anyone over thirty, the Silent Generation was who they were talking about.
@@nancyx6390 People born between 1929 and 1944 are called the Silent Generation even though they are the loudest and most obnoxious of them all. They got the name because there were fewer of them than the older WW2 Generation and younger Boomers. The early 1940s saw some of the lowest birthrates in recorded history. Silents tended to admire and tried to emulate the WW2 Generation but felt invisible next to them. At the same time, a lot of Silents hated the Boomers for being allowed to grow up spoiled and entitled instead of feeling like unwanted burdens in the middle of the Great Depression.
I'm part of the Silent Generation and was in my 20s in the 1960s. I was right there with sex, drugs and rock & roll, flowers in my hair (which by the way was down to my knees) and not trusting anyone over 30. Be careful with your generalizations especially your nasty ones. You are doing the same thing you complain about. The softness, the weakness, and the gentle sensitivity of the newer generations is obviously and disappointingly contagious. I'm surprised that a boomer is as soft as butter on a summer day. Tiny Tim needs to man up.
While Jessie was not being ageist, you clearly are: _"of the newer generations"_ If you want to avoid bigotry, you just see the individual and not judge people by their color, sex, nationality, age, gender, etc. And I'm not just being "soft" I'm certainly not young myself.
