Hey Mangs! Love your videos! I would suggest to order the videos of the playlist from older to newer. I can only speak for myself but when I watch a playlist like this one I like to watch the matches chronologically. I don't know if I'm alone in this one, please consider it!
This comment chain is like that meme with giant boots standing behind a small dude, then behind those boots are even bigger boots (I hope someone gets what I'm talking about I'm terrible at describing)
29:20 "Beginners they don't tend to yield, they like to fight to the last unit" It's actually very simple: beginners like to play the game for as long as possible. If they all yielded as soon as they realize they lose, they wouldn't be playing much at all. That's not fun. I remember when my dad was teaching us Liar's Dice. Normally he's really good about teaching us games, but in Liar's Dice he would try to end the rounds IMMEDIATELY: he would find a way to go last and force the rest of us into a losing position on his first turn, and we HATED it. Beginners want to PLAY the game to learn stuff, they don't want to see veterans force them into a losing state on the first few turns and then demand surrender. It just comes across as a dick move
The faster you realize the game is over and that you screwed your early game the earlier you could retry your early game. I don't see any problem with that.
Quitting when you are in a losing position is a terrible way to learn, too. Gives you a better idea of *why* you're losing so hard. Also... Only playing the earlygame is a terrible way to teach yourself to play AW. Because when you go up against an opponent who can keep up with your polished earlygame, you have no lategame experience to use, then you have to repeat the wall-headbutting that you just did to the early game.
I think there might be another reason. I haven't yet played AW, but in all the strategy games I've played so far it is considered really bad sportsmanship to surrender before the game is over. You are supposed to give the winning player the satisfaction of having beaten you and not just flip the table around when things don't go your way. If I were to start playing AW, I would definitely act the same way I do anywhere else and keep playing until the game ends. (I know, this is a late response, but whatever.)
Why do you always build infantry besides the obvious reasons? Because even as the weakest unit in the game at 1HP, an infantry unit can scout, block bases, and waste an enemy units turn by being fired upon. -- Whole military complex full of freshly constructed tanks ready to be fielded. -- Can't move them out of the factory because a lone, wounded and dazed enemy infantryman is standing outside the gate. Airplanes want to move over a plains tile? Well okay, but only after a solitary dude with an assault rifle lost somewhere in the middle of it that probably can't even see your planes at their altitude gets out of the way first. The entire airspace above him is a no-fly zone if you're not allied with him.
It's probably been discussed before, but I wonder how the balance of the game would change if air units couldn't be blocked from moving through spaces occupied by ground units or sea units that can't attack them and vice versa?
If Advance Wars had a Command and Conquer-esque splatter mechanic, infantry would be useless outside the capture game - even moreso if mechs can't be splattered by virtue of posing an actual threat to vehicles.
At first I thought the guy had this genius idea to load a bunch of infantry onto his transport, send it straight north then west, and unload all the units at the northernmost part of the map to steal your cities and flank you but then he totally just shits the bed.
Watching this guy felt a bit like watching kanbei in the game. Tactically sound. When it comes to actual combat manoeuvring, he was pretty good. As you said, once the fight began, he made the right moves. But had no strategic planning going on, so couldn't ever put himself in a position to create any form of advantage.
He could definitely especially for people that don't know what their doing or the the people that are overconfident I may or may not started talking shit to my friends when the new games were announced
I want to get on TV too, let me try: "How dare you put Kanbei on a high tier? I'm going to lose to you with him a trillion times : )" I'm not exactly a good player...
Hey you know, Eagle’s my favorite CO just because he has the confident poses and his theme is awesome, so I can understand the Eagle love for sure. I’m trying to get good at AW PVP myself, so I’ll check this out once I have the time!
One watch later: Brooooooo I would not challenge someone who’s played AW for years without at least knowing to spam infantry, holy shit. I also fall into the Eagle copper/transport over tanks/apc pitfalls myself, so I’m glad to have learned some crucial info about some mistakes I was making. Also learning the value of tanks over mechs is pretty useful, tho I doubt mechs are COMPLETELY useless... It’s hard to find good vids discussing how to get good at AW, or at least I struggled to find stuff talking about it, so seeing something like this helps me a lot
Lightning drive isn't bad, particularly considering it's fast charge time -- but because Lightning strike is so vastly better to the point of being one of the main reasons you play Eagle and takes so much longer to charge, it might as well not exist.
@@Mangs1337 well later he moved his Recon next to it and didn't attack you which you thought was strange, so my theory is he moved his Recon first, got trapped, and then attacked you with his battle copter after and the replay messed up the order
@@kingarthur3236 this is plausible. Especially since the mech just moves on its own on the turn flip. The mech moved, but didn't display in the replay.
6:47 no it's almost mirrored, in the north east mountain range the east end of it has two mountains, and in the south west western end there is only one mountain.
Hey just a fun question: Can you PLEASSE do a review and or maybe tier list of Advance Wars: DoR? I REALLY love that version of AW because of its darker tone and its variety of units and strategy and changes... PLEASE IF YOU CAN
I've done numerous tests, personally, on a mirrored map with the different COs in DoR, they're uh... pretty linear in scaling, based on order of appearance "on the field" in the Campaign (with exception to Isabella, who never sees combat), which is not exactly something I would call "balanced"...
@@shamelfuller I mean... The UNITS in DoR are, for one .-. I'd say same for AW 1 and 2, theeeen you get into Dual Strike where balance gets a little wonky in that regard with the new units...
I played a fair amount of Dual Strike back in the day and I thought that Sami and Eagle made a cute couple, especially considering their pre-battle conversation in the final campaign. Plus, the Earth and Sky tag power is basically like summoning Exodia in Yu-Gi-Oh: difficult to pull off but an insta-win if done properly.
Yeah, what people forget is that expert players usually can outplay ''stronger'' co options. If your capture game and early trades are just a bit better that can easily win you the game.
Loving these AWBW commentaries! I'm not much of a PvP player myself, but explanations on how the game is played in this setting are still super interesting.
More important than a tier list would be a usage or matchup guide. Infantry is necessary to cap. Recons do about the same damage to infantry as tanks, but are weaker. Antiairs can 100% infantry on plains and most air units. Etc. Tanks are only good because how big their advantage versus anti air is.
12:30 Yea I came across that bug once, you cant see the unit if you get trapped the first time and can get trapped by it again. You have to refresh the web page to see it.
I'm actualy an Eagle fan too and discoverd your channel just after the announcement of reboot camp. I played AW a lot when I was a teen, definitely my favorite GBA game with Golden Sun. I watched a lot of your videos past days (I learned a lot !), I didn't even know there was a mean to play AW online ! I don't know what my level is, since I played a lot but only more than 10 years ago. But I would really love to be at this guy place, getting an analyse is very cool and insightful, especially against a "beginner" player.
I love seeing pvp, hope you do more pvp breakdowns like this. It's very educational especially for me whos just getting into heavier competitive Advance wars pvp
As a French understanding which unit is which is a nightmare. Mechs are called Bazookas, Missiles are called Anti Air, Anti Air are called D.C.A... I'm pretty sure there are a lot of units we didn't see which would prolly be confusing
yeah the replay seems to be broken around 16:49; the helicopter flies in and attacks the recon in the woods that he had no vision of; what blue really did was move his recon next to the hidden recon and then attacked with the helicopter; thats also why he didn´t attack with his recon;
To add something just because someone can do wonders with a Certain CO that doesn’t always mean that tier list are wrong epically if you just play only with a group of friends
I agree to an extent. However, tier lists are always theory crafting. How good one character does against another based on the tools each character has at their disposal. Tier lists do matter, but playing a higher tier character doesn't guarantee you a win against a low tier. That's a mistake a lot of people make.
Maybe some people don't realize that factories provide income like cities, making them purely better. He's not building infantry every turn because bad players will try to save up for their specialization units rather than realize the power of map control and unit counts. I just made an account, but I haven't been able to play yet. Jess and Grit are my two favorites.
It was a very good idea! I hope we'll see more of your pvp battles in the future, with a more challenging player next time. Very interesting to see the mistakes done here... Even if in this case it was mostly on the same side. x)
I've played so many hours on advance wars 1,2 and ds and this is the first I'm hearing of advanced wars by web. Thanks guys, looking forward to trying it out
I think a video on how CO Power Meters work in AW1 and AW2 would be cool. Like when does the AI use the power (start/middle/end of turn), how the meter actually builds up, how to manipulate the meter to your advantage by timing when the AI will use the power, if the CO AI likes to save for the super power (once the stars pass the little power), etc.
I'll totally challenge you. I'm qualified. I played advanced wars against my cousin in the mid late 2000s and lost to battleship spam. You'll never beat me.
I mean, I’m an eagle fanboy but I’m totally not angry about him not being top tier. Tbh I was totally happy with b+ Edit: do you think eagle would be better but not broken if his super co power was 8 Stars instead of 9 to charge? (His little power would be unchanged)
Mangs, I gotta let you know that you're singlehandedly getting my friends into AWBW with this video. I've been asking people to play with me since they announced Re-Boot Camp, as I only ever played against the AI in War Room for years. Now, with this video and some encouragement, my friends are feeling confident enough to give AWBW a real shot, and they're enjoying it! These videos DO make a difference. I cannot wait to see more of them from you! (:
I would love to see some of these long form matches sped up to the speed you used towards the end. No commentary, just gameplay. It would be cool to see two pros go at full speed.
Nice video, I'd like to ad if you play with the sound, you can guess pretty easily enemie build his reccon, so you can already prepare your counter, espacially on big maps
Yes but no in advance wars 1 the sturm you unlocked is a balanced version but in advance wars 2 it is ridiculous you have a op sturm upon you unlocking
Good video idea Mangs, I'm looking to play the remakes of the two games and get into pvp eventually but these games would be my first advance wars games, so I would appreciate some more match analysis so I could start playing with some idea of what to do or expect.
