Beetles ARE quite strong. I tried to pick a real big one from a fence once and he made a nasty noise like that one. I could feel the strength in its legs holding on to the fence as if he had tiny arms.

That is seriously one of the cutest bugs I've seen! :D And the noise makes it even cuter. Wish I could pet/touch one like you did without it biting at you! Where can you find these adorable creatures?

wow... scuse me, but untrue. It's a long-horned wood borer (Cerambycidae), possibly Petrognatha gigas, but definitely in the same subfamily Lamiinae. Adult cerambycids are vegetarians (eat tree sap, pollen and stuff). Antennae are sooner used to find a mate, or perhaps the tree on which to lay the wood-borer's eggs. And pushing air through the "breathing orifices" (called spiracles) doesn't make a sound. The "hissing" is made by rubbing body parts together ("stridulation"), like gritting teeth.

In an effort to document the result of an unreasonable amount of time spent googling, the closest ID I can come up with is some species in Prosopocera.

These guys are just starting to spread in Hawaii, we found two in our house and my family freaked out. Note: living here all our lives and never seeing this bug is like seeing a alien. I caught one and it made the same sound before I smashed its head with a 🔨

oh well :) glad you're ready to learn. it's an awesome insect, I can see it looks more ferocious than it really is. The sharp mandibles in this beetle family are mostly used to chew into wood prior to egg-laying. This requires the kind of cutting power this girl (the antennae are relatively short, boys have them even longer, which is what "long-horned" refers to to) demonstrates. Predatory mandibles are found in Tiger beetles for example. Beetles come in crazy shapes and sizes!

I love insects, but when they make noises and have the potential to fly it really gets my anxiety going. That’s absolutely a species I would sit and observe, but never fuck with. Especially with those mandibles, those would give one hell of a bite.

I found a beetle once that made that funny zipping sound when you touched its horn. ^^ I forget what it was though.
