I really like how Jin is depicted as physically very weak and slow compared to the others, but manages to often get the upper hand through intelligent tactics and knowledge.... y'know, like humans do in real life.

Fun Fact: Pygmy Mammoths are an actual species, they're just not Wooly Mammoths(From what I found). I'm guessing the character is based on the Wooly mammoth populations on the Wrangel Islands (An Island in the Arctic Ocean, between the Chukchi Sea and the East Siberian Sea) which were initially assumed to be a dwarf variant of the species originating from Siberia. However, after further evaluation, these Wrangel island mammoths are no longer considered to have been dwarfs. True Pygmy Mammoths are descended from populations of Colombian Mammoths on the Continent of North Amerca that swam to the Channel Islands of California EDIT: Looking back, I realize that the reason for the Mammoth girl tiny size was that it was an inverse of the Stereotypes of Woolly Mammoths being these Earth-shaking behemoths when they were actually no bigger than modern African Elephants

I don't think people have quite clicked why Jin has so much knowledge. He's human. Even if we go with the "know your enemy" logic. He's a human. He is the apex species in terms of intelligence and knowledge which is what the show tries to display.

He should tell her that humans are thinking about reviving mammoths with modern technology.

Her tiny size must mean she's from Wrangel Island. Wrangel island used to be connected to Siberia via ice sheets until they eventually started melting at the end of the Pleistocene, and some Woolly Mammoths were left stranded there. These mammoths would represent the last of their kind, as they survived until 4000 years ago while their mainland relatives dissapeared 6000 years earlier. Like many other island proboscideans, these mammoths gradually shrank, growing only around 1.8-2m/5-6ft tall. Unfortunately because the population was too small and the island could not support a population increase, their genetic diversity gradually dropped to the point where harmful mutations couldn't be weeded out, building up overtime to dangerous levels until finally dying out from what is known as a 'mutational meltdown'. A genetic sequence from a Wrangel Mammoth was compared to one from a mainland Mammoth and it was found to have 20% less genetic variation, lots of DNA deletions (where whole sequences just disappear), and many harmful changes in important genes. For example, a Mammoth gene called FOXQ1 that is responsible for hair follicle development, but the gene in the Wrangle sequence had both a deletion and a frame-shift mutation. This would have made their fur more shiny, silky, translucent, and not as great at shedding snow, which is a big problem for staying warm in a cold windy environment. All in all, not only is she smaller, she'd probably be a lot more 'messed up' than say a mainland Mammoth in the show, such as developmental defects (the defected gene responsible would be HYLS1) and an inability to smell flowers (a defected version of the gene OR5A1 made them incapable of smelling beta-ionomes, compounds that are a part of what gives flowers their aroma).
