You are correct up to the point about not paying. While the government can confiscate certain items of historical value they will have to pay full market price. It's part of due process. Sunken treasure is one of the times they don't and that's due to treaties which many believe aren't valid on the ships they're used on (i.e. the Spanish lay claim to ships from the 14-1600s which is ridiculous because they have gone through several governments since by claiming they are military ships)

if you go to a pawn shop that means two things. 1: you are lazy and want cash fast. 2: you couldn't get anyone to buy it by your own means in the first place

That's because the whole singature verification and handwriting thing is a pseudoscience, people don't really write the same all the time and can change how they write at will. You can verify that things are fake quite often but you can never really prove handwriting actually is real or belongs to a specific person. The best thing handwriting "experts" can do is a decent guess.

@@duketorpedo3236 yes and no. People can change how they write but there are certain consistencies that are inherent in how people write, even over time. There are real forensic handwriting experts who are trained and really do take it to a science level. Signature authenticators are not those people though.

It’s mostly people who want/need money NOW. I think that’s why some of them get upset. They have some big gambling debt or some other things where they have to have the money right away, then when they’re told it isn’t worth as much as they thought or they get a lowball offer, the stress of their desperate need for the money kicks in and they lash out. Of course you should try to sell to an end customer instead of a middle-man who is trying to make a profit. The middle-man’s whole game is dependent on giving you the least amount of money they can get away with, and then selling the item for the most money they can. You’ll never get the price that the item is “worth”, because he’s got to sell it for that price, so he’s got to give you much less.

They mentioned multiple times that they are not appraisers, they’re simply giving their personal opinion on how much they and any common person would pay for the item. Pawn shops will pay below what the common person would pay, always keep this in mind when you’re selling to a pawn shop. Saying “oh this item is worth this much and anyone would buy it for this much” is a terrible excuse, always keep in mind that your item will 50% less when selling to any pawn shop.
