ANGRY Olive Wood! - Wood Turning

I cannot express how difficult this turning was. I edited out much of my moaning and groaning but I'm sure there's still plenty left in this video. The piece was hard, dry at 4% moisture content, heavy, out of balance and end-grain! It has lots of cracks and crevices, voids, holes and just nature in general. I do think it turned out pretty nice and I'm glad it's over! LOL!

I think your "wire mark" is actually from the chainsaw dogs. I noticed at the beginning, and it was parallel to the cut face. Very cool!

Could be, David, though I don't see individual indents, more of a rub mark but who knows? Thank you! 😊

Ok I have to do it FIRST! ok now I will watch...BRB Ok now I am done watching. Wow that was an angry turning for sure. I know why...that face you showed looked like the guy had rabies .lol Boy I could feel how tuff that was but well worth it. From what your started with and ended up with was a real transformation. I love the shape and it worked out perfect for what the wood had to offer. Now I am going to put my tail between my legs and go put some finish on my simple little bowl on the lathe. Keep up the great work my friend, Gary
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop

Cool, Gary, it's fun to be first! Yeah, this was VERY difficult. Second only to that Manzanita cracked bow I turned a couple years ago. This was a couple weeks ago and I'm still warn out from it! LOL! I'm sure your bowl will be anything but simple. Looking forward to it! 😊
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 3 года назад
Well the Olive is hard, then you add end grain. I had to take a nap just after watching it. The one I just put the finish on will not be for a few weeks. I will mention it when I post it. Tomorrow will be really simple but a lot of meaning. You will know when you see it. Gary

Good morning, good afternoon , good evening from a very hot Spain at the moment. I wanted to write to you and thank you for igniting a passion, like a volcano, that has been dormant inside me. I am so enjoying the videos especially when your turning 🫒 Olive. I live in a small village where all that can be seen is Olive trees. For winter our Woodburner uses Olive or Almond but now those lovely usual shapes of wood have a different destination. At any one time I have 3 tons of wood ready for the winter. I am a novice but with your enthusiasm I'm feeling confident. On behave of all thank you for ability to put across so clearly the beauty in our natural wood. Harvey from Jaen Spain.

A very beautiful bowl from an olive rock. I have been working with only dried, old chunks like this of mountain mahogany, manzanita, and oak of all kinds. To avoid spending so much time on the grinder, I have been working with the replaceable carbide tip. Did you find it easier to work these dried hardwoods with the bowl gouge and a lot of grinding or the carbide tip? Great channel. New subscriber here.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop 3 года назад
Oh, man, Mountain Mahogany and MANZANITA! Both hard but, I've got a Manzanita bowl on here that just couldn't hardly be touched. I don't know how I got it done and I don't even want to think about it! This Olive piece runs a close second (might even be first but I don't want to think about that, either!) I hear you about sharpening, Darin, but I'd rather spend one minute sharpening every five minutes than spend five minutes with carbide. That said, I do use carbide once in awhile, including on the piece I'm just finishing up today. But, I just don't like it. I can't feel the wood and, for me, it removes anything artsy about turning. Now, this is a very touch subject for a lot of turners. I'm just one and I know there is a lot of support out there for carbide. Thank you so much for your subscription! I will try to be worthy.

Beautiful piece, I wonder why you couldn't scoop the inside, it must have made a valuable mini bowl.

Quite a large tenon for this size piece. Curious how you size your tenons/recesses?
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop 3 года назад
There is no science to it, for me, Eric. Mostly just the size of the piece, how deep it is and how much it weighs. This piece was deep for it's diameter and weighed a ton, so, large tenon!
