Such an in-depth discussion! I'm a new grad dental hygienist; I really enjoyed learning about this topic in my pharmacology course. This this will prove to be quite helpful if/when I encounter a patient with these issues. Thank you!
I get it every couple of months too. However, I've recently learned you can use yeast infection cream at night around the corners and it heals in a week. Or if I catch it before the skin breaks it just simply doesn't break at all
Lovely Video clip! Excuse me for the intrusion, I am interested in your opinion. Have you considered - Taparton Skin Delight Takeover (do a search on google)? It is an awesome exclusive product for discovering an easy treatment for Angular Cheilitis minus the headache. Ive heard some great things about it and my best friend Jordan got amazing results with it.
Thank you for covering this subject. I've mentioned my cheilitis to every doctor I've had for the last 20 years and they always say "stop licking your lips". I ask if they see me licking my lips and they do not. I have Sjogren's. Excess saliva is not my problem. That you took the time to go into more detail and provide more options and contributing factors is something I really appreciate.
Finally I have a name for what's been going on around my mouth the last few months!!! I thought I was the only one suffering from this! T_T Thank you SO much Dr Dray!
Oh, my... I've suffered from this condition since my teenage years. I've been controlling it by daily applying moisturizer on the area (the Vaseline brand in particular works best for me.) Now, I never knew why I would be so sensitive on this area until now. Turns out I'm both a drooler when sleeping and also a constant lip licker. 😅 Thank you, Dr. Dray! I love your videos. 💙
Thank you so much for your videos! I have been dealing with skin conditions for years with no idea that I may be sensitive to things like fragrances. I really appreciate how you make your videos relatable by touching on the social/cultural practices that our hygiene practices are influenced by. You are making a difference. Thanks again 💛
Hello! I'm very excited to inform everyone that I'm completely cured from my HSV 1&2 recently. I have used Oregano oil, Coconut oil, Acyclovir, Val acyclovir, Acyclovir, and some other products and it's really help during my outbreaks but I totally got cured! from my HSV with a strong and active herbal medicine ordered from a powerful herbalist and it completely fought the virus from my nervous system and I was tested negative after 14 days of using the herbal medicine. I'm here to let y'all know that herpes virus has a complete cure, I got rid of mine with the help of Dr Ehinormen and his herbal exploit. Contact him via email: {drehinormen@gmail. com } & whatsApp him or call +2347031227778 ..
Thank you so much for making all of these informative videos. I do have a provider, but these videos have really stepped up my skin care regimen. You have also saved me a lot of confusion and money from the marketing ploys. I know these vlogs take up your valuable time, so again thank you.
Omg I AM LITERALLY suffering from this right now and was going to ask your advice on it and then you come out on with this video!! Thank you sooo much!
I’ve been dealing with this for months 😢 haven’t been to the dermatologist and have tried many different ointments. Edit: 11/17/20 I finally decided to see my dermatologist about this and let me tell you, it’s been a week and my lips/mouth are completely healed! What I thought was Cheilitis was Irritant Contact Dermatitis. Dermatologist recommended the following: *It worked for me but might not work for everyone but it’s worth a try. STOP using mint/cinnamon flavored toothpaste and use a mild berry flavor with NO Fluoride. This change alone helped a lot because my lips would get irritated right after I’d brush my teeth. Secondly, I was prescribed Mupirocin Topical Ointment 2% and Triamcinolone Topical 0.025% Cream. Also, stop using any lip balms and use Vaseline when needed. I also switched my face cream to CeraVe. I hope this could help someone.
Had a similar problem but it was all around my mouth. It got so bad the dermatologist was going to give me steroids because if was burning and peeling all the time. After doing my own research (I did not want steroids), I tried switching to a sulfate free, fluoride free, flavor free toothpaste and it cleared up in days. Honestly, doctors sometimes just look at the symptoms not the cause.
@@june2420111 hi can you tell me what toothpaste you used ? And this is so true doctors don't diagnose the root cause. I was given steroids the first appointment and it only got wrose from there.
Ohhh my God my are worse at moment and I have asthma I m on steroid inhaller..and I have aczema ...and gut problem..what did you take to cure yours plz
W W After reading that it is better to leave toothpaste in the mouth rather than rinsing I had this difficulty much more often until I connected the two things. Now I am careful to wipe the outside of my mouth thoroughly after brushing.
When I got rid of the popular toothpastes and started using holistic types of toothpastes, I never have any skin irritations, both on my lips and inside my mouth.
Omg yes! I used to get this all the time but then it stopped... I've been using a more natural toothpaste for sometime but recently used my boyfriends when I ran out of mine and I've had the worst case of sore lips I've had in a long time! Thought it was cold sores but I don't have blisters, it's just super inflamed, sore and cracked :( Wont ever be using regular toothpaste again!
Hi Dr Dray. i once commented that Laneige lip treatment caused me to have a scab on the side of my lip. Now I realize that sleeping on my side, wearing a night guard in my mouth probably added to the problem. Thank you for taking the time to share your dermatological expertise with us.
Thank you. As a result of this video I stopped using my flavored lip balm, purchased Cerave Healing Ointment and within 24 hours the crack on the corner of my lip was healed. 🥳 The crack was there for almost a week and it wasn’t going away. A yawn, a laugh etc and there it was again. Ugh. But a search on RU-vid served me once again with some good advice. Amazing! Thank you thank you thank you! Hopefully not posting too early but it really does seem to be gone. 🙌🏼
I've been suffering from angular cheilitis for 11 years, went to 10 different dermatologist where non of them knew the cause, all my test where normal no vitamin or mineral deficiency, no allergy and no fungal infection. finally i gave up and lived with it until 2 weeks ago I stared taking cyclosporin for psoriasis that I've had for 3 years and its gone just like that, this is the first time in 11 years that I look to my face in the mirror and not seeing cracked lips and cheilitis.
Omg I have this right now ughhhh keeps coming back. Dermatitis? Dang. You’re extremely knowledgeable and professional ... intelligent, well spoken, incredible memory.. I’m so impressed. Thanks!
Mine always seems to act up right before important events :( My college orientation is in a few days and I'm going to be looking like I have a disease. Great.
My husband who’s a doctor just says I have stress he puts me down and down plays my health issues. It’s nice to see someone address this properly and not shove it off as stress. I think I have some type of nutritional deficiency.
My Dr perscribed Miconazole Nitrate 2%(antifungal cream for yeast infection). Started using it today and I can't believe how quickly it's already clearing up my angular chelitise. Update: It's been over a week now and I'm so happy & relieved to report that my angular chelitise has cleared up 100%.
In the oral medicine clinic in dental school, we would routinely test our patients with this condition for iron or B12 deficiency. Also just improving the occlusal vertical dimension by changing worn out dentures can help without the need for Botox. As denture teeth wear, the lower facial third tends to collapse increasing the depth of the skin folds there.
OMG! I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease 4 years ago, I'm on Humira and Azathioprine (both Immunosuppressants) and have braces on my upper teeth (I'm almost 60, but my daughter is an Orthodontist, what can I say~lol). I have been getting with I thought were cold sores, I've tried treating them with Acyclovir and Abreva to no avail. My symptoms sound exactly like what you're describing, I'll definitely be checking with my Gastroenterologist and Dermatologist, thank you for this information, you're the best!!
Thanks Dr Dray for posting this video!! I started developing angular chelitis years ago and there wasn’t much information available on line. I also felt like an outcast since no one I knew had ever had it. It’s reassuring to hear it’s common
I kept using lipbalms that made my lips worse and then I read that people could be allergic to Beeswax (hey, Burts Bees!). Now I avoid all products with beeswax, which includes lots of lipsticks too, and my lips are never chapped. I love Nivea's lip butters and CeraVe ointment.
OMG I was struggling with this for the last 1-2 week (i think my toothpaste caused it) and I was keep putting Blistex Medplus whose 1st ingredient is Lanolin and has Menthol in it 😱😱 And I couldn't understand why it was getting worse even tough I put lip balm. And I can't thank you enough for this video! I literally throw Blistex to the garbage and put Vaselin to the corners of my mouth and BOOM it went away like magic 💜💜💜💜 Really THANK YOU for this video 🙏
I had angular chelitis last year and I rarely ever get it. I had just moved overseas and I think I must have been nutritionally deficient in something. It improved after starting multivitamins and probiotics. Not sure which one worked thou. I was liberally applying mineral oil based lip balms too. Nothing worse than letting it dry and crack even further
I can’t believe the timeliness of this video! I’ve been suffering with this for a week, not knowing what it was exactly. Never had it before. BUT for me, it could be several things I do: retin-a, habitual gum chewer, ice eater, and lick my lips when I don’t have my balms on me. I’ve been using the Cerave more frequently so I hope it helps soon! Thank you!
Ya’ll, take her advice and give the cerave healing ointment a shot. I had a stubborn case of this and when I started using that it took it away in a couple days. Good stuff. Thank you!
I’ve had this for about 2 years and I always thought they were cold sores. Keeps coming back and when I don’t have it I have scars from them on each corner of my mouth :(

I’ve had dealt with this for the past like 2 weeks trying to figure this out. Started with a cold sore then got worse. Now my upper lip is completely flakey, dry and irritated. I think mainly cuz on chapped lips and wearing a mask. This happened to me about 4 years ago the same thing. So strange. This helped me a lot thanks!
Thank you for this video! My 5 year old is currently going through this because he's constantly licking around his whole mouth. We're working with him on stopping the habit but it's nice to hear more about it and actually know what it's called!
I randomly got this on the left side of my mouth! I freaked out because ive never had this before and it looks so gross so here I am looking up ways to get rid of it! Thanks for the info !
My daughter struggled with this. It was counterintuitive for her to stop using lip balms but once she used plain ointments and was prescribed an antibiotic it improved.
I shared your video with her, Dr. Dray, and she was glad to see your suggestions. My granddaughters also have issues with this, 16 months and 23 months, so your video was a timely one for her family. Thanks again!
Dr Dray: Thank you so much for this video. I had this for months and months after a routine dental visit somehow. I went to the Derm 4 or 5 times after trying many of the things suggested from research. I was feeling disfigured, self conscious and frustrated and had tried everything. Finally, she gave me a steroid cream in teeny sample only. It worked like a charm but only after months of visits, co pays and suffering. I haven't quite felt the same about the doctor when she refused to give me another sample or script as I worry about another episode and am frequently out of town for extended periods. I did switch to an SLS free toothpaste and later got filler in that spot and so far so good. I urge doctors to have some faith in your patients of long standing to have these medications on hand to be able to mitigate the implications of this condition. You are one of my favs for the straight scoop. Many thanks.
My poor sister has ulcerative colitis and Chron's and suffers terribly from this as well as severe out breaks of psoriasis in her hands and feet. Thank you for educating on treatment options.
I have experienced this for the first time. It started as a I thought just a dry lips, then it became cracked & so painful. I ended up having to try & self diagnose as the doctor just told me to ‘drink more water’. I am breastfeeding & I have to drink lots of water anyway! I finally got the doctor to give me some other cream, but it does keep coming back. So I’m glad to watch this video! Your videos are amazing & so helpful. Thank you for what you do! ❤️
@@Brandovibe I'm only doing it because my skin is more sensitive than before and to reduce mole/sun spots forming. It burns under the sun without the sunscreen. I'm considering sun protection clothing gear. I'm already using an SPF hat.
@Kid Capo thanks for the suggestions! Cetaphil cleansers haven't worked well before. I will try it again soon. Cerave works better since I have dermatitis.
Omg Dr. Dray, I just happen to put in chapped lip in search because I need a good lip balm and I swear god has brought you to me. I have been struggling with this condition for a year tried everything it has spread onto the side of my mouth and left a discoloration which made me self conscious. I am dark complexion. My dermatologist could not tell me what it was she didn’t even look at me ( not with her anymore) anyway I started taking vitamin B after many google searches and applied pure vitamin e and it seems to have kept it at bay. I’m so happy I found this . You’ve become my best friend:)
I used to get these all the time until I stopped drinking orange juice, using very minty toothepaste, not changing my toothebrush often and using lip balms that have a dipping wand.
I have had this problem for about 2 months and could not figure it out! I am a skincare lover and have been slathering my face with a propolis serum every night. I've done everything. Stopped using lip products. Only using Vaseline and it has not helped at all. Everyone kept saying it was because I needed to drink more water and I knew it wasn't the reason. I just ordered some ointment and will forgo that propolis serum. Hope this can heal my mouth before my wedding. Thank you so much! ✨💓
Dr Dray! OMG!!! I have been researching this for months now. I am a nurse and I self diagnosed myself lol. You gave so much more information on this condition than anyone else on you tube. Thank you so much for this. I know I greatly appreciate this video.
Doc, thank you. Been in pain for weeks now and couldn't hardly open my mouth. Went and got a tube of Cerve Healing Oint and 2 days later, it's healed up. Thank you sooooo much, the anti fungal cream was not working lol
Thanks so much!! I’ve been getting these for months now getting kinda desperate going to the doctor each time, gonna get to work with these right away.
Could you talk about why people breakout more after they fly on an airplane? Is it because of the recycled air, stress on your system due to change in time zones, something else?
Omg this happened to me this week. I my lips had swollen up. Flown back from the USA on Saturday, landed on Sunday in the U.K. with swollen lips. It’s Wednesday, swelling has gone down but I’m left with this on the corners of my mouth. I can’t open my mouth too wide. I wonder what causes it. Stress, airplane air, sleep, time zones, airplane germs. I wonder. (Alyssa, I hope you’re all good now!)
Thank you SO much @Dr Dray!!!! I’ve had these for months and just used something I had on hand which is Neutrogena Norwegian formula, which I think is similar to what you recommend. I put it on this morning and it’s already dramatically improved! My lip balm did have fragrance in it, so that must be the culprit! Thanks again!
Dr. Dray, would you be willing to do a video regarding the treatment of a cold sore to heal it as rapid as possible? Possibly debunk or shed light on some of the myths out there on ways to shorten the duration of a cold sore and speed up skin recovery. Thank you for all your wisdom.
My mother has been suffering with this for months now and nothing her doctor has prescribed or recommended has helped her. I’m sending this video to her immediately! Hopefully some of your suggestions/ insight can help her!
Dr Dray ~ Thank you for posting this detailed information ~ YOU have really made a difference in my 'internal library of skin issues' , problems and TREATMENTS ~ Bless you . Suse & Crew Vancouver Island BC CANADA ~*~
I have Crohn’s disease and with that I have some nutritional deficiencies (mainly iron) and I recently had very bad angular cheilitis which spread around my mouth and I also developed a light staph infection on my face because of a bad cold. It’s really interesting because a friend of mine with Crohn’s also got staph on her face and it became very bad. My pediatrician prescribed a topical antibiotic and my skin is doing tons better! I also switched to less irritating cleansers and moisturizers! Thanks for this video!
Doctor, thank you for listing a bunch of the possible causes. It turns out that the lip balm I had just started using was the offender. I went back to my vitamin E lip balm and the cracks started healing in 2 days. I would have never guessed that lip balm was the problem.
I have had this for 3 years only subsiding for a couple of days throughout. I found the one and only thing that got rid of it: pur mints from Sweden with xylitol this changes the bacteria levels in the mouth. You can buy this on Amazon or most store.
Dr. Dray, as warm weather is coming around the corner and strapless shirts or more exposing clothes are coming out of the closet, I’m dealing with having a really dark face and lighter chest. I mean like REALLY light chest to where it doesn’t match my face foundation AT ALL. I guess it may be more of a hyperpigmentation issue. Is there any healthy and safe ways to lighten your face? There are tons of home remedies on RU-vid but idk about the ingredient used like lemon, vinegar. Some sound legit like using koji Acid bars, but I’d love to hear ur blunt honesty and opinion. 💛
Use a gradual self tanner lotion (I also use tanology dark drops from Walmart for $20) to ev n out your skin tone. I've heard kojic acid sis good for lightening also you could use cucumber juice everyday when you sleep to lighten your face.
So I have the same issue. I have severe anemia after having my 2 children back to back I went to a dermatologist and she looked at it and said it’s a cold sore. I don’t have any blisters but a burning rash on my my top and bottom lips, on the outside of my lips and the inside. Also my tongue and inside lips are itchy and sore too.Get this after licking my lips a lot to. Now my 11 year old who suffers from excezma and chapped lips is now experiencing the same thing. She has a long burn mark on top and bottom lips and it’s very chapped, thank you for posting this video. Very informative
I have it on the edge of my upper and lower lips, literally just the middle part, and non of things listed above applies. I’m very careful with licking my lips. And I’m a nose breather so I rarely open my mouth while sleep or awake. Aghhh it’s annoying.
I get this because my teeth have all been removed (ie dentures in place). My understanding is that the bone recedes/shrinks when the teeth and roots are no longer there, causing the lower face to sag and thus the edges of the mouth to droop and crease. This creates little dark moist crevices where bacteria love to party, and party they do and the skin becomes coarse and dry. My teeth had to be removed because of chronic bulimia, one of the many ripple effects of EDs. Another reason to seek treatment for EDs as early as possible, otherwise it is the gift that keeps on giving....
Happy Friday dr dray :-) did you hear that Amazon launched their own skincare line? And its fragrance free with no fancy extracts! Would love to see you talk about it :-) xx
the surgical masks, gave me a skin reaction on my lip. a year later the skin is not the same, but i havent gone to a doctor because of the covid situation.
Dealing with this for almost 30 days. Also having on and off stomach aches, I think it's related. Going to try the ointments you recommended and see my GI. It's super painful
@@mdlg1983 I've been on steroids and a twice daily antibiotic that's helping but the steroids i hate. they cause more side effects. I don't want to stay on them at all.
I got this last year up to now coz im only using vaseline...i think the facemask is the cause. But after I search this problem, i will try the suggestions in the comments...thank you
I only get this when my skin is super dry and since I lost my Vaseline and it’s cold outside I got it..but I found my Vaseline it’s already clearing up
I got this a few days ago for the first time. Vaseline and Aquaphor did nothing. My derm ended up prescribing Nystatin ointment. It was gone in 24 hours.
