I disagree. The best teacher I ever had used to have a saying: "Now, I'm not supposed to show you this, bu-uutt . . . " (It wasn't exactly like that, 'cos dude had a noticeable lisp, but anyway . . . ) The most exciting (and terrifying) lessons I remember were the ones where the experiment would start to belch out toxic green smoke. Y'see, Mr Davies' lab _did_ have a fume cupboard, but he just used it as a cupboard. His solution, when something went critical, was to grab it, run outside and pour it down the drain - often in the full view of the headmaster who would be showing prospective parents around the place. Then we'd all have to lie about how the whole thing was actually planned and nothing had gone wrong. Mr Davies was a fckking *_legend._* When a bunch of us moved on to another school, we used to tell the chemistry department staff stories about him - not one of them believed us. They outright refused to accept that this dude was real. THAT'S the kind of science teacher the world needs more of. Teachers who are prepared to put an entire building's worth of rich people's kids at *_significant_* risk, just to make a lesson memorable. Not *_ONE_* student he taught *_EVER_* failed the subject.

For anyone wondering: the wheel's angular momentum vector was pointed up. When he forced the wheel around, the vector is now pointed down, so he now has to spin to compensate and conserve angular momentum. So he now spins in the opposite direction that the the wheel is until his angular momentum vector minus the wheels equals the old wheel vector
@MGSLurmey

For anybody interested, look up Vsauce's video on the law of conservation of angular momentum.
@takumi2023
@takumi2023 2 года назад
But how does that translate to him spinning? I thought it was the process of him spinning the wheel through 90 degree. the wheel is exerting a force tangential to the platform he standing on at that moment. I dont understand how a spinning wheel facing down is exerting a force to spin him around. If anything it should push him down instead of around.

The equation goes, omega(i, j, k) = omega(i, j, k) It basically means, if one objects turns one way, something else has to turn the other way. A bit like Newton's 3rd law but in a rotational sense
@Dragoneer
@Dragoneer 2 года назад
I’ll try my best… From what I remember studying angular dynamics, angular momentum (represented by the capital letter *L* , don’t ask me why) is the _dot product_ of the moment of inertia *I* and angular velocity *ω, or omega* . *L = I•ω (kg•m^2/s, or the change in inertia across a given time frame)* This is actually _much_ easier to remember if you have studied linear dynamics and are aware of the classic Newtonian equation for momentum which is ρ = mv where; ρ (rho) = linear momentum, m = mass, and v = linear velocity. Rotational dynamics essentially extrapolate linear parameters along a radius, usually so that you can determine the instantaneous velocity at any point of a rotating object; you can understand how that can be useful, e.g. determining the resulting output RPM of a compound system with knowledge of the input RPM (from an engine flywheel for instance) and diameters of the gears. That sort of thing… The linear and rotational equivalent parameters can essentially be substituted into already known equations. What do I mean by that? Well, take a look at the equation for angular velocity: *ω = v/r* - it’s just the linear velocity scaled along a radius, from the center of mass or pivot etc. (there’s a bunch of different rules depending on what you’re taking as a reference for the center that I can’t remember very well but anyways). The radius is inverted (1/r), because as you can imagine the linear speed of a wheel slows down the further you move out from the axis of rotation; velocity/radius are inversely proportional (this is actually a good way to remember this. It’s like how a gear works, bigger gears = slower output speeds)… [[[ In the same fashion, “moments” are essentially angular forces, because M = Fr. It’s actually another key component of angular dynamics, but alas I digress ]]] Hence; *L = Iω = I•v/r* Moment of inertia on the other hand is the rotational analog of mass used in angular dynamics. It must be specified with respect of the chosen axis of rotation. Because mass will not always be evenly distributed depending on how you rotate an object, this is why we use inertia instead. There are many many definitions for the inertia of different standard geometric shapes, and depending on how far you offset your measurement from this point it can get complicated…as in ”vectorially” complicated lol. But by far the simplest formula to remember is the one for a point mass; *I = mr^2* Essentially just the product of the object’s mass and the square of the radius attaching the force to the point mass. It uses the units *kg•m^2* . Hence, going back to the angular momentum of a point mass you get; *L = Iω = = I • v/r = mr^2 • r/t • 1/r = mr^2/t (kg•m^2•s^-1)* Which is how we get angular momentum. IN FACT…angular dynamics are _much_ easier to understand if you learn the linear-angular parallels. This took a few months for me to sink in back then but it really opened my eyes. So if you think this is bad, try learning the “cheat sheet” below; Linear Angular position x θ velocity v = x/t ω = v/r acceleration a = (v0 - v)/t α = (ω0 - ω)/t Newton Eq. v = x/t ω = θ/t v = v0 + at ω = ω0 + αt v^2 = v0^2 + 2ax ω^2 = ω0^2 + 2αθ x = v0t + 0.5at^2 θ = ω0t + 0.5αt^2 Mass/Inertia m I Force/Moment F = ma M = Iα Momentum ρ = mv L = Iω Work W = Fx W = Mθ K.E. 0.5mv^2 0.5Iω^2 Power P = Fv P = Mω As you can see they’re all just rotational analogs of the linear equations… This is why I love mechanical engineering; all of the equations you learn tesselate with each other beautifully and they just…work…you don’t even need to learn formula. As long as you know the basic concepts you just throw in the variables and it turns out it is the formula anyways… But there you go, a crash course into angular dynamics lol
