This song is a really excellent example of polymeter. Putting the drums and electronics in this kind of vague 4/4 and the guitars and vocals in blatant 7/4 was a stroke of genius.
the most incredible thing i've heard live, i would follow these guys around the globe. a life without seeing this band feels so empty. the emotion they play with is so overwhelming. and i'm done
This song always makes me want to scream my head off, laugh hysterically, and cry my eyes out all at once. The result ends up as an extremely strange noise, if you were wondering. :)
my absolutely favorite song from these guys...and this is probably the best version ive heard of it... ultimate favorite band: COME BACK TO CHICAGO ANIMAL COLLECTIVE!!! still havent seen ya! :( ♥
Because they manage to create music which is very very radical and different, but still makes me ears happy. they have a great combination of both original sounds and very strange recordings, but also being catchy and easy to just have fun too. That's why I love them.
@MissingNumberOne My reason is that their music is literally pure expression. They are one of the only bands i have ever come across that are bound by nothing, this is evident in the fluent yet startling transitions of sounds between their albums. In ten years this band has explored and raised the bar for more genres then more or less any musical acts will explore in a lifetime! Also they demostrate a refreshing attitude to the music industry in this warped era of it choosing to be involved...
I feel just the same about it. When i listen to it I sream over Avey with angst, but it somehow makes me feel hopefull about the future... Some Animal Collective's songs mood are just out of this world.
i saw an interview with them were they said they get rid of loops that they've made so its "impossible" for them to go back and play older songs. which i think is pretty stupid cause i LOVE this song and pretty much their whole catalog. sniff sniff sniff
@thafons I think it's because this was at a festival so the crowd is mixed in with a ton of people that are NOT there for animal collective. The people in front might be there to have a good spot for the next band that's playing. It happens all the time at festivals which is why I'd prefer to see them headlining their own show.
@toddod87 Technically, it is Avey Tare that does the lions share of the singing/screaming, but Panda Bear does also add his fair share to add to the immediacy of the compositions.
Perhaps not as much as many of their others but certainly Wilsons influence is on it, especially the harmony part that serves as the chorus with the alternating "oom oom yeeeah" that turns down. The top part of that has Wilson all over it. I can imagine Love, Jardine and Brians brothers singing the top harmony with Brian singing the alternating part on bottom. Of course you entirely missed the irony of my comment by questioning this but I'm always happy to discuss music any time.
This is the best song on the album. So driving and so full of feeling. These guys might just keep me from blowing the yearning, learning, fiery, wanting part of my brain out and to smithereens. I don't care how few of us there are, we are just a tad ahead of the game, and thats okay. Elitism isn't sooo bad.
@kureece gordon link me to these interviews. And even if they didn't consider it theoretically, i'm very sure they considered it mathematically, and rhythm is expressed mathematically anyway. I doubt that animal collective wouldnt know what a 7/4 time signature is as well..
i think they were at their best, performing live with four members. Seen them twice with 4, seen them three times with 3 (aka electro orientated.....). .....and it was pretty different in rock n roll attitude. this a great live performance. Wish them back like this....... Grtz
@jakke007 I totally agree with you, although I've only gotten to see them with 3 (and it was still a great experience!) However, watching live videos of them performing as a group of 4 makes me think this was their best setup.
Whatever dude, The Beatles are tight. I love Animal Collective, I even put them on that level with legendary acts, like The Beatles or Dylan. Don't hate on The Beatles though, they are eternally beautiful. That's really neither here nor there, I came here for Animal Collective. Love this song and these guys!
