CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The good Captain (Groucho Marx) bursts into song and dance for his esteemed guests.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Animal Crackers, like The Cocoanuts before is an all-but-literal translation to film of a smash-hit Marx Brothers Broadway musical. The aristocratic Mrs. Rittenhouse (Margaret Dumont) holds a weekend party at her Long Island Estate. Her guest of honor is famed (but likely fraudulent) African explorer Geoffrey T. Spaulding (Groucho Marx). Also showing up are renegade musician Signor Emmanuel Ravelli (Chico Marx), the mute, girl-chasing "Professor" (Harpo Marx) and Spaulding's faithful secretary Horatio Jamison (Zeppo Marx). The film, revolving around a stolen painting, finds Groucho lecturing on his most recent safari ("One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas, I don't know"), Harpo and Chico unabashedly cheating at bridge, Groucho dictating a wildly nonsequitur letter to the firm of Hungerdunger, Hungerdunger, Hungerdunger and McCormick, and Groucho and Chico drawing up plans to build a house.
CREDITS:
TM & © Universal (1930)
Cast: Groucho Marx, Zeppo Marx, Margaret Dumont
Director: Victor Heerman
Screenwriters: George S. Kaufman, Morrie Ryskind, Bert Kalmar, Harry Ruby, Pierre Collings

They created and/or popularised a type of absurdist humour that would influence future generations of artists and audiences. For artists I think of Monty Python. As for audiences I need only consider my own tastes in comedy (and the tastes of my family and friends). I can see a short line from this to my favourite 1970s sitcom, The Bob Newhart Show, and my favourite 1990s sitcom, NewsRadio. Scoop in Robin Williams on the way, as well.

One day Groucho took the night off because of illness and Zeppo did such a good job in Groucho's role that Groucho dragged himself out of his sickbed for the next night's performance. Groucho was a great wit, comic singer and a very creative dancer. I have heard that Margaret Dumont was great as his "straight-man" because of Groucho's lightning fast delivery and improvisation. Sometimes, she didn't get all of the rapid fired jokes.
@tirebiter4009
@tirebiter4009 6 лет назад
In one scene he's clearly ad libbing and he proposes marriage to her. Then he asks if she's already married. She is clearly confused and stutters out a "no". He replied that she didn't seem sure and the last time a woman answered him like that, he had to jump out of a window. That was true. In his autobiography he tells a story about going home with a woman between shows in vaudeville, and her husband came home unexpectedly. He had to jump out of a window onto a prickly bush and was all cut up at the next performance.
