Thanks! This is in the key of D Major, so I had to raise all the F's to F# and the C's to C#. I included a link to the sheet music in the description, but am considering creating a Kalimba Tab as well.

I played this in D Major, which is the same key as the original. So to play this arrangement you will need F#'s and C#'s. If you have any questions about tuning, don't hesitate to ask 😀

@@moshibass do u recommend tuning kalimbas multiple times? I'd love to change the key of the instrument but idk how much bending i can do before its bent too much

While I can technically only speak for the kalimbas I own: In my experience of retuning to many keys, it has never been a problem. I've even taken the tines completely off and put them back on a few times (which puts a TON of stress on them), and they still worked as good as ever! So all that to say, I don't believe tuning a half step here and there shouldnt be any trouble for them.

Hey there! In this video I'm using a 17 key kalimba. It came tuned to the key of C, but I tuned it to [if I recall correctly] D. Kalimbas are tuned by pushing the tines in and out, and I think exploring different tunings is a large part of the kalimba adventure! All that said, I would honestly recommend grabbing a diatonic one in the ~$40 price range to get started. Chromatic kalimbas are just so dang expensive and you can really achieve a lot by using alternate tunings. (PS if you buy small magnets, you can use them to change the tuning even mid song!)

@@Jay-fl5yr Yep, changing some tines by a half step is no biggie. Also, you can actually buy all the metal parts for a kalimba online for like 10 bucks. So if you are handy, you could even make your own or *possibly* upgrade an ordinary kalimba to a chromatic one 😀

Moshibass one last question. Roughly how far can a tine be tuned? A half step? A full step? Further?

Depends on the length of the tine. The higher ones are way more sensitive, even a slight tap with the tuning hammer will make a big difference. I don't have a really solid answer for this, but you can go a lot farther than just a whole step. You can push them in as far as you want, but of course they can only be pulled out so far. Even if you wanted to make them all really low, you could probably order some more long tines that would fit. I've been starting to build my own kalimbas and they are such a great instrument to experiment with. Feel free to ask as many questions as you like, I could talk about it all day! But if you want to go for a deeper dive, a great book that I'd recommend is by Bart Hopkin called "Making Lamellaphones".
