Guy, I must insist that you do this kind of thing more often. Providing insight on the choices made for a particular composition is something I find both educational and inspiring. So yes please do more deconstruction videos.
Im not the one in the household who's clocked up 150 hours! My little house looks a bit sad compared to the others but its a very very clever game and the sound and music are brilliant. The attention to detail is astounding.
One absolute banger of a RU-vid video right here. Guy's one of the best teachers this earth has seen, and I mean that in more than a classroom sense - it's rare that you can teach wonderment.
Most people's studios are without any windows, totally closed. I really love the way you've created your home studio with a lot of light! That's something I'm going to do with my home studio! 🙂 Btw, thank you for your videos and knowledge you share with us!
Brilliant! Invaluable practical glimpse into a composer's mind, re-using a theme and taking it through VERY different emotional/narrative contexts. I loved watching this and will watch it again, and atempt to transcribe the theme and what you did with it to learn more. Thanks! And DO do more of this kind of thing!
Brilliant video and you're an awesome person! I wonder if you noticed the subtle music changes when you're visiting the museum. Like when you're in the dinosaur exhibit the music is simple and eerie, evoking a feeling of a very distant time, and when you move to the room with mamooths it has a similar ancient note but kind of like it was less time ago than the first room. Or maybe I'm just imagining things, but it makes me feel that way. Anyways great video as always, cheers!
Guy Michelson's videos are helping me stay motivated so much during this lockdown. Been a really difficult time for me and this guy's attitude to making these videos is amazing. Thanks Guy!
Maybe a video on the use of leitmotifs in general. Peter and the Wolf...The Batman TV series (remember each villain had their own leitmotif?) maybe Wagner is a bit too much, but such a useful tool for "character recognition" is a must for scoring to film. Can't remember whose channel it's on, but someone did a great "deconstruction (Derrida ™️!) on the flat 5th motif in West Side Story.
The amount nostalgia in this theme makes me weep like a child without fail, it's good to know the chords themselves evoke that deliberately and I can tell myself i'm not a 22 year old locked in my room sobbing to the New Horizons theme in a blanket with a grin for no reason right? .....r......right?
Guy, this was a fantastic video and I would love to see you do more 'deconstruction' videos in the future. Been a subscriber for a number of years now and it's great to see your channel grow from strength to strength. Also, thank you for keeping us all entertained (and educated) during this lockdown period 🙌
I just found out this channel today, and I love this "Guy" already! Good information with a right amount of jokes, he's also very expressive which is lovely.
Hi Guy, i would love this to be a Series. There are so many cool video games with iconic Music. Love your work it educates and entertains at the same time. Best wishes to you, your family and everyone else important to you
Having watched a few of your videos now, I can happily say that I have subscribed! You are a captivating, energetic and highly entertaining presenter and the content of your videos is always engaging and inspiring. Thank you for continuing to provide us with fantastic, enriching content! :)
Indeed, Guy. Manipulating a 'motif' is a great way of squeezing every last drop out of the font. Probably something we should practice a little more. The pitch bending idea is an interesting angle. I have always been a bit of a fan of bending when I get half the chance. Doesn't always work out well but the possibilities are endless.
Enjoyed the ever-loving stuffing out of this. For more VGM to deconstruct, may I suggest David Wise's work on the Donkey Kong Country series? Who wouldn't love to hear Guy breaking that down?
Absolutely adore these kinda videos. Actually I've gotten quite a fan of your channel and even dusted off my old Roland JV90 and installed Logic Pro on the Mac to get going again. Now if only I could actually play a nice little tune instead of just mocking around. Now that would be something!
This was one of the best things I've watched this year. I didn't skip or fast forward a second of 30 min video. Please to more of these!!! #collectAPPLESS
Amazing, extraordinary, instructive, funny... thanks for your vídeos. You are great !!!! Greetings from Spain.

I didn't know how badly I wanted to hear Guy talk about VGM until it happened. Is there a chance you might do more? :D Thank you so much for a delightful video!
I thought the "Deconstruction" idea was really great! When I hear something I like, I immediately try to work out how it's done. What are the chords, what kind of keyboard, why does this Springsteen track have glockenspiel on it? Breaking down how a number was done is part of being a music fan, and a musician, in this day and age.
Wow! Guy, you have opened up so much for me in this session, showing how music is such a wonderful thing and that anything is possible. Thank you so much, just gotta learn how to play the keys?
I really enjoy your videos they're both educational and entertaining. You do make me chuckle plus I go away with new ideas for my own composing. Thanks Guy !!
To be fair, a LOT of recent Japanese music follows these kinds of chord progressions. Dozens of anime themes, example, follow very similar - if not identical - chord progressions. It works really well.
Nice video guy! Do stuff like this every Time you can! By the way I'm doing your course "How to write music" and Is really well made, I'm learning a Lot!
You should definitely look into deconstructing the soundtrack of the “Little Nightmares” video game! I would love to see you do the opposite and maybe make it sound more happy? Looking forward to more content, truly inspirational! 🙏🏾
Not gonna lie but I thought I was going mad when I didn’t see this uploaded earlier on in the week. Thought I had dreamt that guy mentioned about this video last week! Doing up a room to be a studio at the moment but looking forward to watching this with gusto later! :)
Guy, a request. When you stream live, make the timing varied. Because all of your streams are streamed 11pm in India and worse in eastern countries. So one day, you do at 5pm and the next day another time. That would be helpful. Thanks!✌🏻
But the fluegelhorn gets missed as a trumpet. To me, the fluegelhorn adds a lot of character, particularly in a mellow, somewhat nostalgic way. That's a small point, though. It's great to hear this sort of analysis!
This is all so entertaining and informative. Gotta love it. Subbed. My wife's about to invest in a keyboard. Why did you change keyboards away from the NI 88 to the Oxygen?
As a teenager I hope I stay as fun and youthful as you in my later years.. whether or not I can become a similarly talented composer is a different question! Thank you for your wonderful videos, Guy.
An appeal to the scientific community: please clone Guy. Due to his knowledge, positive attitude and amazing sense of humour, he should be available to each and everyone of us. Basically, Guy is a human right ;) Make it happen!
I like the "grandchild" analogy! What about going the other way with it, though? a V7 chord sounds "expecting," so maybe the I is the child that comes from that expectation; in turn, that makes the V/V the grandparent!
Guy, could you do a video on using external MIDI controllers? I think that's what it's called... (I thought it was the pitch bend wheel at first but the pitch wasn't bending!) I think I've noticed you using different ones in your videos as you play, but I didn't know what they were. Excited to see more videos like this!
Guy Michelmore Twitch stream coming soon? ;) Regardless this was great - would really love to see some more content regarding video game music. Personally it's my favorite realm of composing so this was fascinating, and I'd definitely be interested in some more. Some really good ones to look at would be The Witcher, Horizon: Zero Dawn, or Assassin's Creed Odyssey.. they all make heavy use of real "native" instruments that you don't see too often, so I think there's a lot of potential there to make interesting content. Thanks as always for the video!
