With my power situation this is a no-go from the start, but this is a very cool module. I totally dig tubes, and would heartily recommend a Bizarre Jezabel Mimosa to check out. It’s a beautiful distortion. I appreciate that you took the time to explore it for less extreme styles, rather than simply mangling everything that came through and calling it a day. I’d like to see much more of this. Too often certain brands or modules get pegged as a particular type of music machine, and too seldomly do many take the time to suss out other things from it.
Dude, for future reference ... "heartily recommend", not "hardly recommend" - quite literally (or metaphorically), the opposite of what you intended. But your sentiment is spot on. Cheers1
Just to understand this better if we build this again - what about your power situation makes this a no-go, and what would solve it? That would be great feedback for us. We did debate the external PSU while designing this, but figured it would be safest to let the tube heaters be powered externally, since we measured inrush currents of up to 800mA before settling around 300mA on one rail. Not an issue per se, but this can have the effect of causing modern power supplies to trip and overcurrent protection to kick in. We figured that one more cable is probably not going to be a dealbreaker for Eurorack users :D The module itself only draws about 130mA from +12V and 50mA from -12V. It's the heaters that need to be powered separately. Also we agree 100% with you - this is a beautiful demo of a module that we personally just end up smashing things out of! Love how Tom has extracted some really nuanced sounds from it.
@@AnimalFactoryAmplificationMy synth is made up of 17 smaller cases. Power receptacles are at a high premium. It’s not the external power supply per se, but my particular power issue. What is are the power specs? Can it be run with say, a Cioks pedal power supply?
I’m not familiar with how the cioks power supplies are protected - if they can supply 12V 300mA comfortably, continuous use shouldn’t be an issue. It just depends on how they react on startup. Usually this is not an issue on transformer based supplies, so if you have one of those then you should be ok.
I’ve got a godeater pedal and love how it affects the tones of anything I put through it, especially kick drums. The Orobus on the other hand might be a little too noisy for the rest of my minimal setup. Good demonstration nevertheless.
Yeah, I think it could be in the same kind of ballpark. I haven't used a Culture Vulture but does feel like it would cover similar sonic territory. The Orobas has the advantage of mixing and VCAs on each side, but doesn't have a LPF.
Many retailers charge no shipping if you spend $100. Some countries cannot tax non-residents if the goods are shipped out of the country. Many retailers in the US don't charge out-of-state customers any tax. I don't know your situation but it might not be as bad as having to fork over $900 for a sick tube VCA, lol.
