My hot take is, people should not gift influencers. I mean influencers are already famous and most have some rare items, instead jammers should keep their items or give them away to jammers who are less fortunate. The only exception should be fan art.

Agreed. In my opinion it’s encouraging people to want to become influencers in the first place, because my friend always dreamed of being rare, she admires these big aj players and sees how they get gifted. That’s the entire reason it’s her dream to start a channel. It makes me sad that that’s the entire reason why she wants to do it, I gift her a ton but it never seems to be enough. I think they already have this big following and with so many people watching their videos and seeing how they get gifted isn’t a great look. Art I am not bothered with, because it’s personal to the player and shows how much you care. I know they do a ton of hard work but I don’t think that means gifting forest worth items, and just becoming rich off of it.

Honestly I feel like AJ became a bit less play to win. I remember in like 2018 when I joined the only way to get sapphires was paying or those minigame achievements, packs were paylocked, and there was no daily spin wheel. my biggest gripe with both games is the art style change. I LOVED the beta versions, the colors, the backgrounds, den items, and the art style (i base my own drawing style on taylor maw’s). animal jam captured what i loved about nature when i was a kid. now most of the den items have a plastic sheen to them, and don’t have earthy colors like they did. i totally get that though, as the brightness of it all is to attract younger players. i do appreciate that they didn’t just redesign all of jamaa, coral canyons, sarepia forest, lost temple of zios, and balloosh have my heart

12:49 I think this is just objectively wrong, 2010 was the year AJC launched and virtual world flash games were incredibly popular around this time frame with games like Club Penguin, Moshi Monsters, etc topping the charts and having every child in world almost wanting to play them. When making Animal Jam, WildWorks (previously Smartbomb Interactive at that time) wasn't even planning on making it an animal-based game. In fact, the original avatar for the game was going to be Snoopy as they had previously developed a lot of Snoopy games on console and PC in the past for the Peanuts company. It wasn't until they pitched to NatGeo is when the development cycle took a turn The popularity and momentum of AJC is what lead to WW creating AJPW, saying AJC shouldn't exist would've meant there wouldn't be any AJPW. While it's true mobile games/tablet games dominate the kids market nowadays, back then it really wouldn't have made much sense for AJ to tap it in fully yet. They experimented with certain apps like Tunnel Town and AJ Jump before diving into AJPW and they didn't really receive an explosive popularity like they seen with AJC before hand I would say it wasn't until 2018/2019 when AJPW started to take over AJC in players/popularity, which is 8/9 years after AJC released. AJPW definitely rode the momentum AJC had set for it and took it to another level because of how flexible the game is (being a mobile game + a 3D game, it's a lot easier for them to develop for) also I know this could be biased bc I'm a notorious AJC player but STILL

Flash games were very popular in 2010, but that doesn't mean that much when they declined in popularity a few years after the fact. It's hard to gage how succesful an MMO is as active player numbers are usually only divulged when an MMO is doing very well, but we can make an estimate based on the fact that Disney had to start laying off Club Penguin developers, close the game's UK office and shut down spin-off games in 2015. Laying off workers is something you really don't want to do for an MMO unless things get really dire, so we can safely assume that the game had been in decline for a while, possibly as far as 2013. but even if we're generous and say that Flash games only started declining in 2015, developing your MMO game in a framework that started becoming obsolete only 5 years after you launched it is still kind of a disaster. There is as reason both Club Penguin and Webkinz followed suit with WW and started developing Unity reboots for their MMO's, Flash based MMO's weren't really sustainable into the mid 2010's. Ironically, I want to praise WW for making Play Wild so quickly after Classic launched, but at the same time it kinda proves my point that they shouldn't have made classic. You say PW was made because Classic was succesful, but this really makes no sense. No sane developer will make multiple MMO's that compete for the same demographic, they will just cannibalise each other. It's the same reason why Nintendo has dropped the DS line despite being the most succesful portable line in history, it's because the Switch is already portable. Releasing a new generation DS while the Switch is out would force both consoles to fight for the same userbase and developer resources. Nintendo dropped the DS because they knew the Switch and a new DS would cannibalise each other. Though Wildworks didn't make PW because they're stupid, they did it because they knew that Flash based browser gaming was a sinking ship and Classic would hemorrhage users as the years went by. I also refute the idea that PW wouldn't exist without Classic. If WW could develop and market a succesful Flash MMO in 2010, why wouldn't they be able to develop and market a succesful Unity based MMO in 2012? We don't know the exact development cost of Classic and PW, but you yourself state that PW is easier to develop for. WW would lose out on 2 years of revenue, but they would also save money by not developing a reboot to their brand new MMO only 3 years after release. I can't really find any reason as to why WW wouldn't have been able to just wait 2 years and develop a Unity based AJ that would be as succesful as the one they made in Flash. To clarify, I'm not saying they should have twiddled their thumbs waiting for 2 years, but in an ideal world, WW would have developed other games for 2 years and pitched AJ to NatGeo around 2012-2013 when they realised that Flash was dying and Unity was their future. I also don't see any reason why WW shouldn't have focused on mobile as early as 2012. Unity already ran on mobile at this point and games that were otherwise mediocre like Angry Bird raked in cash just from being an early child friendly game that would keep kids busy. I find it very hard to believe that a child friendly MMO with cute animals that kept kids quiet wouldn't have been a big hit around 2012-2013. And even then, the game would still be on PC, maybe not in the browser initially as I don't know when Unity got browser compatibility, but it would run on PC from day 1. You mention AJ Jump and Tunnel Town as an argument for why they shouldn't have bet on mobile devices earlier, but that's kind of a non-sequitur. Those games were in no way meant to serve the same purpose as the actual AJ MMO. if my research is correct, they were released in mid to late 2013. This is late enough that the decision to develop PW was likely made already. I don't know for sure without consulting the developers, but I'd be willing to hazard a guess and say those games served as exercises for WW to learn Unity before committing to developing PW seeing as that game was crucial to WW's future and developing it with an unfamiliar engine would be risky. I can't really make a response to your claim that AJPW overtook AJC in popularity by 2019 because there doesn't seem to be any information corroborating on this. I've found one Clark Stacey interview from 2017 that states 70 million registered users, but that doesn't say how many of those users were actively playing and it doesn't state if that was only Classic or not. AJ logins are centralised across PW and Classic so they likely don't separate the numbers. Even if it is true that AJC was more popular until 2019, it doesn't really disprove the idea that AJ Classic shouldn't have been made since the hypothetical 2012 Unity Animal Jam that would be on both PC and Mobile has every reason to have been as succesful as Classic was. Look, I can sympathise with people who have a lot of nostalgia for Classic, but game development reality is that maintaining 2 MMO's that compete for the same playerbase and development time while requiring different skillsets to develop for is an awful situation that no developer wants to be in. There is a reason why Classic gets few updates and require membership to a higher degree, it's because for WW, it's an expense. whereas PW is an investment to them. I suppose if "AJ Classic should have never existed" is a hard pill to swallow, an alternate take is that it should have been released years earlier. Closer to when Club Penguin and Webkinz launched to give WW more time to build up cash reserves. maybe they wouldn't have had to sell out to an obscure indian company

@@volgornhorn4880 Disney closing off club penguin is it’s own thing..flash games were extremely popular and no one knew flash was gonna end soon enough. They likely didn’t know either hence developing it, they may not of even had plans for PW till years after classic..of which they couldn’t of even known to wait a few years. Even then would PW of even been successful if it classic never came out? A lot started playing PW because of classic! PW got a name for itself and returning fans from classic. Imo classic SHOULD of existed it just probably should of been dropped AFTER PW came out (aka a temporary game to give people a feel for your upcoming game, and to rack up funding and gather a player base). Idk why they never did this but imo THAT is their mistake. Not making it temporary. You think Nintendo just doesn’t make a console knowing a new one will come out in a few years and compete with the last? No they kill off the old one..every console being temporary. Classic should of been just that, temporary and not further developed to put in more work towards PW updates after it released. It also 100% should of come out sooner (classic)

Author of the hot take at 12:45 here. I feel like I should respond to some feedback from the video and some that I've come across elsewhere seeing as some people seem to misunderstand exactly what I said. or they just didn't sit through it. It kinda needs to be long because the perspective I'm coming from is a developer/business perspective which very few players are actually privy to, so I need to be as thorough as possible because I know it's a hard pill to swallow for a lot of people. But here's a few reactions I've come across and my response to them. -"You're wrong because AJC was more popular than PW until(insert year)" This argument is irrelevant because I'm not arguing that Play wild should have been the only animal jam game ever made. I'm arguing that WW should have developed a single Animal Jam unified across both mobile and PC instead of having 2 versions made in 2 different frameworks to maintain. There would still be a PC Animal Jam game, it would have simply come out around 2012 instead. I think people interpret my hot take as "PC AJ bad! Mobile AJ good!" when it's really more of "There should have never been separate AJ's for PC and Mobile in the first place". -"PW was only succesful because of AJC" Again, this ignores that I'm arguing for a hypothetical unified version of animal jam, not for PW to have been the only AJ game ever made. But if the argument is that "A 2012 version of AJ made in Unity would have failed". Then why would that be? It would still have the qualities that people look for in AJ, you'd be chatting, decorating Den's, dressing up cute animals just like in the 2010 version. Only difference is it would come 2 years later in be made in a framework meant to last. -"Flash games were popular in 2010, so making AJC in Flash was smart" An MMO is meant to last for a long time, so it needs to be kept accesible for a long time. Companies rarely give exact numbers on how an MMO is faring, but Club Penguin was one of the biggest flash MMO's ever. And by 2015, it was doing so poorly that Disney had to lay off entire offices to keep it afloat. So I think we can say that Flash games were on the decline by 2015. Both Webkinz and Club Penguin had to develop Unity reboots just like WW did. But unlike AJC, at least Webkinz and Clup Penguin had 10 years on the market before declining, a typical MMO lifecycle. Whereas AJC had only around 5 years by the time it needed a reboot. If Classic had been developed in 2008, I'd be singing a different tune, but 2010 was right before everyone realised that Flash was on it's way out and engines like unity were the future. So it was the worst time possible to decide on developing Animal Jam. -"Tablets weren't popular enough in 2012 to warrant targeting them as a platform" I question this seeing as Angry Birds became a giant overnight simply due to being a child friendly game with a sense of identity that came out on Tablets, right as they were taking off as the ultimate babysitter devices. But let's say that they didn't explode overnight. Well, it would have still been a better idea to make AJ in Unity because Unity still supports PC's. they would have still been able to make it on PC, Mac and even consoles if they wanted if they had only chosen Unity from the start. -AJC was still succesful so it doesn't matter" Perhaps it was for a while, but it has brought with it serious consequences for WW. They fractured their player base and now has to deal with animosity between PW and Classic players, angry Classic fans that ask for the game to be updated, PW that want features that were only made for Classic, needing workers that know Flash instead of just needing workers that know Unity, spending money on a reboot to AJ just 3 years after the Classic launched. I don't think people who only have the perspective of a player realises just how much of a headache WW has given themselves by developing Classic in 2010 instead of waiting and realising they could have made a singular animal jam in Unity instead of awkwardly supporting 2. Legacy support is one of the biggest headaches that technology companies face and WW could have avoided all this if they didn't make the game that came to be known as AJC

even in a development stand point some of the things you brought up dont really make sense, for one Club Penguin died before flash did. and the reason it died was because of how expensive the memberships for the game had become, which is what people hate Disney for.... being overly expensive whether or not the quality is good or bad when it comes to their products. they tried to make an app but that didn't last long, if you're argument about mobile gaming being so popular for why aj classic wasn't a good idea, tell me why the mobile Club Penguin Mobile was a total disaster... and why aj classic was still popular and had a ton of players until 2018 (the last time they really updated aj classic and added new animals and content and such.) If it wasn't so popular why did WW bother going out of their way to keep classic playable after flash died. Webkinz even, yes has 2 versions like aj does BUT they still update the original game as frequently as the new game. i think the takeaway is really that WW is just an ambitious company that has many great ideas but hardly the resources to make it happen. i dont think that Aj classic and Play Wild are competing for audience, sure more kids probably have tablets then computers these days, and that exactly why play wild exists. meanwhile i feel Aj classic has shifted target demographics very drastically in recent years, having more young teens playing it and other young adults who are there for the social aspect or the nostalgia while Play Wild is much more accessible to children and it shows. you dont need to pander towards what's "popular" to be a popular franchise... just look at Pokémon! they are years behind in many aspects when compared to other popular video games even Nintendo's other IPs, and yet it's still insanely popular.
@volgornhorn4880
@volgornhorn4880 Месяц назад
@@TheTazame Club Penguin died in large part because browser gaming sharply declined after the rise of tablets. The death of Flash wasn't a snap of the fingers, it was a gradual obsolescence. The industry didn't drop Flash on a whim, it was barely seeing any usage by the time it was killed off. The idea that Disney willingly let Club Penguin die off by pricing membership too high is ridiculous. You can say a lot about Disney, but they're not foolish enough to price their products out of consumer reach without reason. If they increased the price, their telemetry has estimated that to be the best volume to cost ratio. In other words, their userbase was likely dwindling, but they noticed whoever was left were more active players and more likely to put up with price increases. No one outside of Disney is privy to exactly why Club Penguin Island failed, but we can gleam a lot of hints by looking at statistics. Google trends shows Club Penguin peaking in early 2011 and then saw a sharp decline in late 2013. By the launch of CPI in 2017, the popularity of Club Penguin was only about 5% of its 2011 peak. In comparison, Play Wild launched in 2014 when Animal Jam was at around 70% of its peak popularity and peaking at the end of 2015. If we a assume a reasonable 1-2 years of dev time for both games, CPI started development when Club Penguin was at 10% of it's peak and still falling, whereas Animal Jam was still peaking. The failure of CPI is not an argument for Flash games, if anything, it's a demonstration of what happens when a brand fails to course correct and adapt to changing market conditions. Contrary to Club Penguin, WildWorks understood almost immediately that their target audience was ditching browser gaming and they needed to move to a more sustainable platform. I think I also need to explain that industry changes are slow. Just because something didn't die immediately, doesn't mean its death wasn't forecasted long ago. Blockbuster didn't die the second Netflix showed up. Netflix started their streaming platform in 2007 when Blockbuster was still not too far from its peak, and it didn't show a significant decline in popularity until 2012(going by google trends). Anyone you ask today will tell you that it was obvious that streaming was the future and rental stores would die, but it took 5 years in practice for it to actually happen and Blockbuster didn't fully close until 2020. Even if I give you the benefit of the doubt and take your word that Classic was still "popular" in 2018, which is generous as Animal Jam itself had declined about 80% from its peak in 2015. 8 years on the market before active development ceased is still a relatively short lifespan for an mmo. And again, market changes happen gradually. If Wildworks wound down development of classic in 2018, the decline likely started years ago. On the topic of Animal Jam classic cannibalising Play Wild, this is more of a business perspective than user persoective, but the consequences can be observed by regular users as well. There's already some degree of infighting between animal jam users, especially Classic players resenting mobile players. But here's the business reality of the predicament. When Wildworks has to support 2 versions of what is conceptually the same game, they have to write support articles twice, they need to train their support staff for 2 different, but similar games, they need to maintain 2 different server architectures. It's a massive pain to support 2 different games that are so similar, and who generally share an audience. By that I mean most players will only want to spend money on one of these. If Classic shuts down tomorrow, only a small minority of players will actually cancel membership or spend less money. They're putting in double the support work, for little to no extra revenue. I know very little of Webkinz, google trends reveals it peaked in popularity in 2008 and lost 90% of that popularity by 2013 and has been at less than 1% of it's peak in the last few years, so I'm surprised it's even operating still. There's very little information on how they operate, although an unsourced claim states that they rewrote the Classic version to not use Flash, which would potentially explain how they're still managing to expand on it. Animal Jam Classic still runs on Flash, they just pack the game with a custom browser that still uses Flash and that's how they keep it playable, but the game is still running Flash at its core. I'm not sure why you bring up Pokemon, it has very little to do with an mmo like Animal Jam, but we can compare them in the context of adapting to market trends. Pokemon absolutely "panders" to market trends. The series has been incredibly willing to experiment with the features of new consoles and while they're struggling to keep up with their competitors in terms of production values, they're still putting in an effort. People debated endlessly whether or not the series would move to 3D characters or keep using sprites when they moved to the 3DS and they've recently embraced the open world formula. Not to forget Pokemon Go which was a very unexpected move for a Nintendo franchise. Gamefreak has always paid attention to market trends and tried to evolve with the times. They've faltered in quality recently, but it's easy to see that they've always made an attempt. If anything, Pokemon is a good example of why it's important to evolve with the times and not do what Club Penguin did and ignore market changes until it's too late

I do understand people getting anxiety from trading (heck, I get anxiety once in a while too) For me though, I got more stressed from declining a trade and then asking then to trade again. It was so awkward and scary. Plus, I always tell people if you get scared having to talk to people, then just turn your chat off. I see so many people asking if you trade them to turn trade chat off. They can even have mps on their list that say that. It is so simple, at least imo.

I know I'm a little late for this, but I have another hot take, this time it's a lot more controversial lol. This is just my opinion. People only miss the old trading system because it's nostalgic. It was NOT better, I don't care what people say :'). There were countless scams you could do with it, some of which were fixed with the update. The system itself was very obnoxious when it came to bargaining. I was playing a lot when the old system was around, and as a trader, it was incredibly difficult to talk to the person and ask them to add without them having to re-do every single item. Sometimes I even got scammed by forgetting what they had before asking for an add or change. The old system was not good for bargaining, nor trading in general. People need to stop complaining about the new system, because it's honestly so much better. It's only the nostalgia that keeps them angry! XD

THIS For the love of my cat, the old trading system was not better. I played for quite a few years with that system. It had its benefits, yes, but it also was awful when thinking about bargaining or making complex transactions. The new system allows you to chat (or not chat!) without others getting in your way, and it prevents a multitude of scams. Us humans are real good at resisting change. It's part of our nature. Just because something has changed though doesn't mean it's inherently bad. Sometimes we need to let change happen in order to fix issues or make improvements.

Kind of a hot-take, kind of just a small opinion, but I might as well: I'm actually very fond of the Artic hare. The arms and some of the animations are a bit funky, but I actually think its rather adorable (especially its face), and the sleekness makes it feel almost elegant.

its been a few months but theres actually still quite a few! You won't (usually) find them in the pillow room, but if you sit in gabbys animal hospital for a while you'll at least eventually see a good few advertisements for roleplays :)

In aj classic you can choose your server. The fanbase of AJC uses the different servers for different things, such as using the Aldan server for trading, or the pillow room being wild in the chimbu server. In ajpw u can’t choose a server, so I believe that’s why the community in ajpw is soooo small. If AJHQ lets you choose servers in ajpw, that would fix a lot.

i think the take about the my shop was kinda stupid bc ajpw been a trading simulator since 2016 and before the my shop you culdnt really get like 200 sapphires without spending money

Imo i'm pretty glad play wild, or now the "actual" animal jam was made. classic got more and more weird to me the older i got. besides from the massive lag this game has, it's honestly kinda creepy to me. this weird 2d artstyle with those weird 3d yet 2d animals bothers me, and how outdated and weird they look. the "new" aj is so much smoother now and imo much more appealing to the eyes than classic. sure i miss the old days on classic back then, but i wouldn't give the new one up now for it.
@volgornhorn4880
@volgornhorn4880 Год назад
The AJ classic animals are probably 3D models pre-rendered on the server side. I really don't think they're hand drawn. Highly compressed pre-rendered graphics tends to look rather creepy
@Pocket_Zip

@@volgornhorn4880 ik they're not drawn, hence why i added 3d, just didn't know what other word to use other than artstyle. but yea thats def one of the reasons why they look so weirdly creepy

nobody is gonna see this comment bc this video is a year old but i have things to say about the “classic shouldve never been made” take. i have a lot of bias because i barely ever play play wild. BUT i truly think that if classic never existed play wild would not be nearly as popular. classic had the bigger fanbase back in its early days it was HUGE and the main reason why play wild got popular is BECAUSE of classic players shifting over and making content for that. it just happens now that play wild is more popular and theres more ppl who started on play wild. but i don’t know if it could’ve ever gotten to where it is now without the original. like i said classic in its prime was MASSIVEEE and i haven’t seen play wild be THAT big honestly ever. yeah anyways rant over

My hot take is, I think that trading on animal jam classic is so much easier than animal jam play wild. Hardly anybody accepts fair trades on animal jam play wild and always want something more. I find that animal jam classic trading is so much easier because people will normally accept under trades. I find that nobody ever accepts slightly under trades on play wild, which don't get me wrong, it is valid, but it's just so much easier on ajc. That's my hot take.

Honestly, I don't really like animal models. Animal models are quite useful for decorating, but I see people using them in skits rather than actual people, and, although I get anxious when using real life jammers instead, I think jammers should just stop being so lazy and let jammers be in their videos. If you go out and advertise, there are many people out there that would be much more useful than an item that can't even say too many of the lines in your skit.

IMO i think that a lot of the pay-to-get stuff is fair yk? But AJ has gone too far with; not being able to do pet expedisions, no my shop fees, the custom name tags yaknow that kinda thing. Cus personally i'd be fine with paying to get a membership but my parents are very very against buying online stuff, regardless if it brings me joy or not. And there are probably a lot of kids who have something similar and otherwise us non members have a MASSIVE disadvantage in game and makes the game a ton less enjoyable..but thats just my oppinion ;/ LOVE YOU KIJJIIIIII!!!!!!!

I like the comment at 10:11, because its true but I adore this truth. I kinda became a tycoon for tiered pets and thats how I make my sapphs XD. I also enjoy using any marketing techniques to sell my quality pets ;3. Young players are easier to persuade XD. So people easier are able now to create better dens with their now higher budget.

People are ignorant. They expect everything to be free to play and all the content to be free when people need to pay rent. This game can't run for free. At least it's free to play. Most games are like $80 with Micro transactions. This game asks for $5 for something that doesn't take away from the whole game. It's just a den or a pet or a returning animal and people are complaining for no reason. Like when the galaxy super token came out, there are someone in the sapphire shop during the countdown complaining while everyone was counting down and it's like you don't have to go out of your way to go into the sapphire shop to wait for something to come out to complain, you could play the minigames. There's not very many areas that are cut off and you can get 650 sapphires for free, which is the equivalent of 12.99 Canadian people are complaining that we're getting new updates and new animals with micro transactions well everything in life has to cause something. They're not charging a lot in a lot of games. It's like $15 Canadian for like a pet in this game. It's like a few dollars for an animal $0.50 to a couple dollars for a pet I resell those tokens for like thousands of sapphires so you don't even have to pay $12.99 per 650 sapphires

What about those who are 100% free to play? No need to call us ignorant. the microtransactions give us fomo( fear of missing out), and while its obvious the game cant be completely free, i just find the raise in prices for things and the super boxes sudden (and i dont think my mom does microtransactions anyway), and im not paying money for some pixels, i want something physical that's worth having(like the jazwares toys). though i won't rain on other's parade who are excited for super boxes and what not and complain on the countdown and stuff like that.

@@awesomepikachu2903 You won’t pay for the stuff, cool, that’s on you! It’s not your thing and that’s ok..but it IS some people’s thing and that’s the main way people get money off of free to play games outside throwing adds in your face..I’d rather have a few things be pay locked that are cosmetic than have to get adds pop up every 5 minutes You aren’t missing out on anything by not being able to buy 1 or 2 cosmetic items. If you want the item that bad pay for it 🤷 you don’t HAVE to have it, stop whining. Y’know how silly it’d look if I went to the store and whined that I had to pay for stuff? That’s what whining about a cosmetic item is especially if there are tons you can have for free..buy it or don’t, no need to complain

@@testerwulf3357 "Y’know how silly it’d look if I went to the store and whined that I had to pay for stuff?" those are physical items I don't even have access to my bank account yet and you're telling me to just pay for it, and just because i dont want to pay for something doesn't mean you can't And i said i don't complain about the new stuff, its just sudden when a lot more cooler things are for money or are high value, you need to read again.
