I did not expect him to say "armadillo'. Nearly spit my teeth out! Seriously?? I was thinking bird, skunk, stray chicken, vole. An armadillo??? That's so crazy!!
Ugh I just want to cry for you 😭 but also it's incredible how resilient you guys are! I need to be better at not wanting to just give up when too many things go wrong 😢
My Pappy used to use a PVC pipe to drop in the seeds. He put the pipe in the hole and dropped the seed down. He got too old to bend over for all of the planting.
In Carol Deppe's book, "The Resilient Gardener", she shows planters that you use standing up. It is just a fiberglass rod rubber banded to a 3/4"to pvc pipe.
hey guys i just take my hoe and dig a shallow furrow really quick and i use a piece of plastic conduit and drop my seeds through that into the furrows as i walk...no bending over..then i take the hoe and cover the seeds...works for beans as well...
Wow. The struggle is real! I had some kind of animal eat all of my corn seed one year. Unfortunately, I didn’t find out until it was too late to replant. Glad you solved your problem.
I’m learning so much!!!! Your pantry is my dream and I’m watching every single video of yours to get my garden motivation up! The weeds kill me halfway through the season. I lose my steam!!!
@@TheSeasonalHomestead i have 4 ft high welded wire fence on 6 inch fence posts for chickens. Unfortunately black bear bent it over when it went for the chickens. Next step, electric fence👍
Just recently came across your channel and I share your love and health benefits of growing my own food. It can be a lot of work but very gratifying. The first year I started gardening I planted a lot of seeds by hand and the next day most of them were dug up and eaten. I too thought is was the birds but after talking to a old truck farmer he told me it was most likely mice. He explained the mice can smell your scent on the seed when planted by hand, so the mice will dig them up and eat them. He recommended using Latex gloves when planting by hand and it worked. Hope this helps you too.
Why do you plant corn seeds @ 6in apart then thin them out. Why don't you try 8inapart and not thin them. Garden is coming along really nicely. Thank you for sharing your life with us.. How far away is you house from your land ?? How many years have you planned for it be before you move to that land permenantly approx.?? Where abouts in the world are you??
Can you use this same concept with PVC pipes to make the holes? This will allow you to drop the seeds into the pipes before pulling it up out of the ground. Just a thought :)
I would highly recommend getting a couple scarecrows or owls or snakes to put in the garden. Not real animals LOL and also animals do not like the smell of human hair or animal hair like dogs. Also I would hang some CDs old CDs because the flickering of the lights will help. Scare the animals. Also you can put motion detector lights that run from solar power and that can help scare the animals as well
Love you and your family! Would you mind sharing where you purchased the green netting because we have a problem with birds in our garden too and this is a great idea. Thanks.
I know how hard all this is. A lot of work. Keep it up! We had similar issues with water & corn seed. For us, birds & mice got all our seeds. Lots of replanting. When we first bought our property, we planted citrus trees. We didn’t have a pump on the well yet, so my husband installed a hand pump. The kids would pump water into 5 gallon buckets & we would get our trees watered by hand. Not enough rain & too much heat. A lot of that work was done wearing a baby. 😆
