The fact that they took a character whose greatest physical feat is slamming a desk, and turned him into a fighter for the fastest most high-energy fighting game, AND IT ACTUALLY FITS, is absolute godlike game design.
While slamming the desk is iconic, Phoenix has also canonically ran through a thick ass reinforced wood and metal door, fell into a raging river from way high up and got hit by a car, and he shook them all off. This man is unstoppable.
@@realchezboi don't forget he also got hit with a fire extinguisher and he hit a telephone poll when he was sent flying by the car. Man is a walking miracle.
I'm always amazed by the work that will go into translating a non-fighting game character into a fighting game. It feels like it should be a dumb idea but they frequently make it work.
yeah, I've been having this idea for a fighting game series where all of the characters aren't from fighting games, but are rather from various console generations, like the Atari franchises from the second generation, and the girth of mascot platformers from the fourth generation.
@@Sonic09Hedgehog I'm pretty sure its tied 1st strongest single move, with the other being vergils (both of them are new in UMvC3, feel the power creep) lv3 super while in his lv1 install super, and Phoenixs is also frame 1 and fullscreen
@@scrublordesaka3678 No, he needs to be in front of the enemy. Phoenix Wright hits EVERYWHERE. It's a true full screen. In front, above, behind. If you aren't blocking you're gonna get hit
soki from onimusha dawn of dreams in tatsunoko vs capcom has 2 themes too but only in the original japanese release (called cross generation of heroes) because the localization removed character themes altogether
@@Brunosky_Inc yeah, but IIRC, it was up to date when Phoenix got it, and Edgeworth just straight up had another autopsy done, which just so happened to make the original one outdated.
As an Ace Attorney fan the way they handled Phoenix is incredible and easily makes him one of my favourite fighting game characters of all time. He should be in more games it's a travesty that he wasn't in MvCi in any capacity. *_TAKE THAT!_* And this video is my evidence to support that!
I think it might be a good thing that he stayed as far away from MVCI as possible, but I remember hearing somewhere that Apollo was planned for infinite.
Not sure if you've ever been complimented for it, but I absolutely love the transitions you make. I love how it's unique for every character or game you're talking about in a video, and they just keep getting better!
His "Order in the Court!" super deserves special mention, as it knocks down both the user and the opponent. By using it, The Judge is basically "resetting" the battleground by bringing order, making both players start from scratch.
Stuff like Phoenix in MvC really makes me want to see a whole licensed fighting game that is just straight up silly like Danganronpa or Doctor Stone where all of the characters movesets are just really weird .
Dangaronpa is more easy with characters like sakura or the most of character have a trait to begining similar like rival schools But doctor stone always exist character like that easily can fight but characters like senku or crome would be more intetesting
I would love to see if some new Capcom crossover title managed to pull off Sissel as a playable character. Even if he's so obscure that most would have no clue who he is. What I would personally do is make Sissel a puppet character where the point character is Lynne. And of course there needs to be a super with the giant chicken.
2 things 1) As someone who was able to finally start playing these games when they went on sale on the eshop a few weeks back, I really thank you for keeping spoilers to a minimum. 2) I have used RU-vid for a very long time and came across hundreds of Chanel's, but I can safely say, you guys are in my top 3. Dang fine work you Do.
Phoenix Wright is one of my favorite non-fighting game Capcomverse characters. It's funny that most people don't even know he's a Capcom character since they associate that company with primarily fighting games.
Nowadays capcom's mostly thought of bc of resident evil, DMC, and monster hunter tbh, street fighter's also up there tho megaman and ace attorney are also big IPs for them but, slightly less so right this minute
@@dbclass4075 No for sure it is, I was just saying that I don't think Capcom's solely associated with fighting games these days Ace Attorney is HUGE by VN standards, and I'm rly grateful it is
@@KrissyBlues In the most unexpected turn of events, Ace Attorney Invetigations 2 is localized (and packed into a duology bundle). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PLFMaakr_xg.htmlsi=gtozdqTxLUG93y7Q
Something that I've noticed that seems a bit more meta about PW's design (which may or may not be a accident) is that all top players that I've seen put him as the point (first) character, making him begin as the seemingly weakest link of the team and taking on the full brunt of the enemy's team, but I think that's the point, as it further mirrors him beginning in a disadvatange. There's also the fact that with his teammates covering for him and by being on the battle from the first second, PW has better chances to make his case as if he's also beginning a new case in his game, rather than suddenly taking over the case from somebody else. Also with specific assists and supers, PW can easily break his opponent's guard, like with Maya's super, in which if you attack in either low or high (I don't remember which one, the opposite height to Maya's) on the last hit, you get a guaranteed opening. It makes me think of the final cases of the games, in which PW always needs the help of his friends to truly come out victorious. He's a monster in his own right, but he's at his best when working alongside others, and it meshes greatly with UMvC3's team focused gameplay. Man, I was sad when he didn't return to Infinite, but considering the hot mess that that game was production wise (unrelated to the fighting game on its own merits), I'm kind of glad he didn't at the same time.
I love Ace Attorney and Nick's appearance in UMvC3 always tickles me as one of my top choices and an entry to truly get into traditional fighting games instead of watching from the sidelines. Nick in UMvC3 is so perfect that I've got reservations on him getting into Smash Bros cause I doubt they'd make him as cool as he is in MvC. I'd still love to see him regardless but it'll be tough to top perfection.
You should go back all the way to X-Men cota. It's interesting because that game established the fighting style and animations of marvel characters which still persists today in fighting games.
For the longest time, I was always fascinated with Earthbound(and Dragon Quest recently) characters being adapted from a first-person turn based RPG into a fighting game. Particularly their Spells and how they appear in Smash Bros.
I still think to this day Phoenix is still the most well translated character into any fighting game ever and in the most creative way possible. His gameplay works and feels like an Ace Attorney game. Maybe the only other character I can consider is Steve in Smash Bros Ultimate, as he effectively turns a match into a game of Minecraft Manhunt.
Ace Attorney is basically the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure of puzzle games. I mean, not only does it have a similar level of over-the-top absurdity, but the cases are even structured similarly to a lot of Stand battles in the series!
What do you mean that its structured similarly to Stand battles in Jojo? I'm a big fan of Ace Attorney, but I know barely anything about Jojo so that sounds really interesting to me
@@battousaix4263 In JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, the enemy will usually have some strange ability that has them starting the fight with an unfair advantage. The main character (or side character in some battles) then finds some creative way to use their own ability or a weakness in the enemy's to take the advantage for themselves. Then, part way through the fight, the enemy will usually take back the advantage with some other creative use of their ability. From there, either the main character or side character in question finds some weakness in the enemy's ability to exploit and wins the fight, or in some cases, the enemy wins the fight. This is similar to how most cases are structured in Ace Attorney.
One of the things I love about Marvel VS Capcom and Smash Bros. is well they tend to adapt characters from other series and be very faithful with their representation, capturing all the traits of their personality. Even if they really "don't fit" in a fighting game, the devs make it work.
Finally a video recognizing my favorite fighting game character of all time! Idc if he’s considered one of the worst characters in UMvC3, he’ll always be in my team
Besides the brilliance of adapting Ace Attorney into a fighting game for Phoenix's movesets, I also like how Maya is implemented in his moves: Investigation Mode is the only mode where he access to Maya's shield reflecting how she helps him primarily during investigations. In Trial Mode, he can't use the shield referencing how Maya's assistance is limited. There is also the Order in the Court Hyper Combo that sets him back to Investigation Mode and destroys all bad evidence, referencing the Judge calling off the trial for the day and telling both the defense and prosecution to resume investigation.
He may never be a top tier but Mr Wright is probably one of the best designed fighting game characters ever. It's really smart what they did here. Good luck designing another character that fits this "function".
I always find it funny since I found Lythero first everyone brings up IHeartJustice and I'm just here like "what about Lee?" The effect of coming into different realms via different doors. But now I REALLY wanna give Phoenix Wright a try. Just to send Galactus to jail.
This and the Monster Hunter videos are the only videos of yours where I have any idea what the hell you're talking about, but I'm watching them all anyway. Your writing & delivery are really strong, engaging, and snappy, even when I have 0 context or prior investment! Props to you :)
You just made a video about JoJo's fighting game, proposing that making one that was in tone with the franchise would be very hard, since the enemy stand user™ is on the advantage at the start of the fight, but this character give us an example of a posible solution, maybe player A and B could select a move-set and at the toss of a coin, one player gets to keep its move-set and the other is given a random one, mimicking the use of new abilities and creative problem solving used in the show, of course this is something I just came up with, eventually the players would know every posible random move-set, but what im trying to say is that giving player A an advantage and B a comeback through the understanding of their new moveset doesn't necessarily make a bad game
though im not a phoenix wright player, ever since his trailer dropped i always appreciated his animations and how he expresses himself and what his games are about. i really wished daredevil was playable in ultimate mahvel three, so we could have a team "courtroom drama" with wright and she-hulk.
"I'm the worst character in the game to the best" is a gameplay element I enjoy immensley. Magikarp, fatgum (MHA:OJ2) and the line tetris piece are all great designs and Pheonix especially is a comeback factory
I think it should also be mentioned that Phoenix Wright has one of the highest HP values in the game... He has survived being tased, falling off a waterfall, and getting hit by a car AND flying into the air and slamming into a traffic light post, then falling to the ground, and he was out of the hospital within a week! He can take a hit and then some!
He also shoulder checked a huge double steel door open because Maya was in danger. Explains why his "mundane" actions hit so hard, but he doesn't realize his own strength. God of Truth indeed!
@@dbclass4075 Low tier doesn't mean they have low hp. Nemesis is low tier yet has a ton of HP while Phoenix(Jean Grey) has paper hp but is one of the most oppressive characters in the game
Ace Attorney was genuinely written as a critique/satire of the Japanese legal system in some aspects; while a lot of the courtroom antics are added for flavor, the adversarial nature of the justice system and hilariously skewed weight of the prosecution is one major reason for Japan's boasted 90+% conviction rate. You would need to be a lawyer as tenacious, inventive and reliable as Phoenix to make your way as a defense attorney.
I was expecting a video about the great ace attorney or the franchise in general...but i'm satisfied with what we got. maybe he 's in smash after all? Btw, i just learnt that Kana Hanazawa voiced Susato in the japanese dub of the Great Ace Attorney games
For the longest time I thought Vergil's special Lv3 while he's in Devil Trigger was the hardest hitting attack in the game Leave it to a lawyer to beat him, dude's got like 20+ yr of child support to catch up
I always thought Phoenix was the most awesome character in marvel 3. I think it’s part of the reason i never really wanted Phoenix in smash because I don’t think sakurai could top capcom themselves.
I'd become a bit bláse in recent years with how kiddy the Ace Attorney games are. You go to trial for a client that's basically dead to rights, you find out that criminals in this world are VERY fond of framing others with writing the fake culprit's name in blood, and start pulling apart the prosecution's case till the turnabout conclusion. As ABI said, even if it's nonsense, it still makes each case seem fresh and satisfying to engage in. But then I realized something watching this video, specifically with the word 'absurd' being thrown around as much as it was: the writers of this game seem to be big fans of Franz Kafka and his book 'The Trial'. In that book, the protagonist is also the star of a kangaroo trial, where he not only didn't do what he was accused of, but he's not even formally told what he's being charged with, regardless of how much he demands an explanation. It's almost as if every public official in the Ace Attorney series has been taking part in a Kafkaesque system of farcical trials until a guy like Phoenix came and uprooted everything, especially when you consider that Phoenix occasionally has to put his own badge on the line - for doing his job as a defense attorney, lol. Even when you rack up a growing record of court wins, Phoenix is *never* given the benefit of the doubt with his arguments, and the prosecution are even allowed to withhold critical pieces of evidence - something I'm about 99% sure is labeled as an illegal practice, in the real world. XD I actually got a newfound respect for the Ace Attorney games, now. They definitely are in touch with Kafka's idea of absurdism, though it's done in a way I never thought of till now.
This is how powerful Turnabout mode is: You see those fingers he keeps throwing out? Getting hit by one of those means your character dies by the medium difficulty combo that follows. A.B.I wasn't exaggerating when he says that Ace Attorney is the most powerful move in the game. If you get caught attacking from ANYWHERE in the frame it was cast, you get caught and take 70-90% of your health as damage.
Isn't it also completely unblockable and undodgeable? I remember that "Ace Attorney" is comically excessive in just how overwhelmingly powerful it is - I suppose you can't block the abstract concept of justice!
yeah, the giant fingers go more than half screen, have overhead and low versions, can ground or wall bounce you, and can be chained into themselves 5 or 6 times, and thats just one thing he gets
In terms of guest/crossover characters, I can't think anyone as brilliantly designed as Phoenix Wright. Whoever came up with such a dumb idea and make it work perfectly deserves an award. Fun Fact: In Ace Attorney, Phoenix Wright is basically unkillable (A long fall into a cold river only gave him a runny nose, and getting hit by a car and launched into a light post head-first only gave him a sprained ankle). In UMVC3, Phoenix's health is at 1,000,000, one of the highest totals in the game (tied with other powerhouses like Dr. Doom, Ryu, Wesker, Super Skrull, etc. while only being lower than the likes of Thor, Hulk, Haggar, Nemesis, etc.).
And, while non-canon, in Phoenix Wright vs Professor Layton, he is strong enough to hold back a man in a suit of armor much taller than he is. Dude is just built different.
Let's also discuss how he kicked down locked doors at least twice (one of which had a reinforced iron lock on it). Both times were to save his friend Maya, who he believed was in danger, so he personally attributes it to adrenaline, but it doesn't undersell the fact that he DID IT.
Phoenix Wright is all about throwing out wild accusations and bluffs to win court cases, so for his playstyle in investigation, trial mode, and turnabout mode to be insane in the membrane is on point
