Animation: The Central Dogma

The 'Central Dogma' of molecular biology is that 'DNA makes RNA makes protein'. This animation shows how molecular machines transcribe the genes in the DNA of every cell into portable RNA messages, how those messenger RNA are modified and exported from the nucleus, and finally how the RNA code is read to build proteins.
The video was made by RIKEN Omics Science Center (RIKEN OSC www.osc.riken.jp/english/ ) for the exhibition titled 'Beyond DNA' held at National Science Museum of Japan. RIKEN OSC has published in Nature Genetics on the regulation of RNA expression in human cancer cells: www.nature.com/ng/journal/v41/...

For someone who is totally uninteressed and in biology and just have to learn the basics in school, I really prefer these cool animations becuase it actaully makes it a little fun to watch, which makes for a way more efficient learning. There is no way I'm gonna think they're actaul space ships anyway.

Awesome video and the high-tech stylization is weird but it is clear how things work with each other. Watch this on a Mac after pressing command-option-control 8 and the colors invert making everything glow like Tron! Also, this was made in Japan, which explains why everything is super futuristic and mecha-looking.

The Animators were Japanese Anime producers, which accounts for the stylistic choices made. They decided that they did not wish to compete directly with XVIVO in trying to duplicate the process directly, and having the stylistic choices helped students to recognize the different parts (every protein involved in Transcription is accurately labeled with its name, making it easy to look up and remember).

I love the robot/mechanic/spaceship stylisation. I am so used to see everything depicted as blobs, or erroneous shapes that this made a refreshing change. I also really like how the interactions between the proteins are shows, with docking, hooking on etc rather than just passively joining up. And I am still chuckling at RNAP 2 :-)
