A lot of it depends on the spacing. I think the frame rate for the clip you mentioned was 12 or 15 fps. 24 and 30 fps could be smoother, but 30fps could also be more jittery since there would need to be more and more frames drawn, which equals more and more chances for spacing mistakes. I've had the best luck with 15fps for striking a balance between smoothness and manageable work load (drawing 24/30 frames a second is usually overkill UNLESS you have really fast motions moving across the majority of the screen). Add in a few more frames between each basic scene. (Say like 4 between each scene). For each of those 4 frames: Stretch and squash them to keep the fluid flowing and going. Also make them move in the direction that the object is facing up or flowing down at. I hope this helps!

I animated them that way frame by frame. It would be smoother and less jittery to pan a single drawing across the screen, which now that I think about it would have been a faster option to use.
