Animator's Survival Kit [Scribble Kibble #44] 

My college library had the Richard Williams Master course dvds and I think I watched them all about 5 or 6 times, they were fantastic! I watched them a couple of times on my own and then tried to convince my fellow animation majors to watch them, which didn't work as well. *sigh* I tried.

This book is great and all.. BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE PIKACHUS IN IT!! it needs more pikachus!! I WAS SO DISAPPOINTED IN THE LACK OF PIKACHUS

It is not just a book to recommend, but it pretty much considered as an animator's bible. I know when I was in school, pretty much everyone in my dept, which was 3D, had a copy of this book, even the teachers and heads. It is a must have book for any animator and it simple to read with its diagrams.

Take it from the OG Williamsfan, this is absolutely tops information. The lip-sync section has stuck with me for over a decade!

The animators survival kit is helping me a lot. I had made two pretty good walk cycles, one before I read the animators survival kit, and one after. The smoothness of the animation it's self doesn't change, but with the actual walk cycle there's all of a sudden a huge improvement. Plus the "you need to learn how to draw life drawings thing" struck me hard. Now I'm trying to draw a bit more from life (though not nearly enough). Plus it made me draw more humans.... I never draw humans... I draw animals that talk and some sometimes walk on two legs... I NEED TO DRAW MORE HUMANSSSSsss!!!

"Poisoning your tea with " is the best metaphor for tangential learning I've ever heard.

I've always enjoyed listening to people talk about their passions and go into detail about how it's done. Especially animation!

My parents bought me the book for Christmas 2018 and it makes me kinda want to turn my hobby into a career even more!

I Have the Animator's Survival Kit in hard back and I LOVE IT to pieces!!! its helped me so much as a beginner animator and is one of my prized possessions. Its a MUST HAVE for ANY ANIMATOR!

In reality, that book is preparation for you to work with many others in the industry while not having the sole freedom of making your own projects unless you want to be on top and let other animators follow like during the career. While I think the book is useful, it has led others to work for some businesses both well and not so well.

I love your videos. They are really helping me become a better comic book artist and animator. I still haven't really started and animation yet, but I do have characters prepared to be animated. I honestly think lip sync is going to be one of the hardest things for me to master but I'm going to try lol. Thank you for making videos about animation that are easy to understand. love you.

Not being artistically inclined, I always see that walk cycle picture whenever animation is talked about. Clearly a very important fundamental book and it seems to be far more expansive than a lot of the other fundamental ones I had to read.

I have the book for 12 years now. I teach animation in vocational high school in animation programme. Im not an animator like Richard Williams, more like a project manager though. The book really a bible, also with the illusion of life (by frank thomas and ollie jhonston). And for drawing, try kimon nicolaides' book : the natural way to draw.

Had to slow down at the new parts of your character to a slide. You are adding more movements to Scribble Kibble.

I am making my movies much better and differently. Since it is just me doing animations, I will be using animated and still frames to better tell my stories since it is too rough to complete my works alone with just too many drawings to make something move. I will be fine. So far, I am finishing my work a lot better. It is best to use many motion and still pictures to help audiences see stories better. Good video too.

A great book, undoubtedly, but I've always felt as though it lacks structure. Williams seems to just ramble on about whatever topic comes into his head. This makes finding the page on a specific topic is more difficult than it feels like it should be.

Hey crown, you should check out Ava's Demon. It's a web comic but every chapter or so the creator does an animation to support the story. I recommend reviewing the latest animation because I can't figure out how she animated it! It's driving me crazy! The art is also top notch, and it is a good story if you are interested in a binge read. It took me about half a day to nock it out.

I copy, then break it down into my own little style. Piece by piece. I can make really good faces

I made a playlist where you can learn animation skills much much better without relying on too much money to consume your efforts to acquire knowledge from expensive sources. I even have fun tutorials and details from people who helped me get better with my art.

So i was trying to animate and I'm trying to figure out what's too much and too hard to do an animation to and what's too little and looks flat.I'm trying to to a semi realistic animation so i cant really over exaggerate it

But how to draw though? Like I like drawing growing up but taking graphic design program for college made (I stopped) me feel like I don't know how to draw anymore.

plez, I mostly draw cartoons, does this mean it'll be harder to work up to even-slightly-professional-looking animations

Honestly, I really don't know how to draw cartoons and characters. BUT I do know how to copy and imitate from what I see in real life. This is why I can make backgrounds easily. But I WANT to know how to draw characters and their anatomy, and I just CAN'T GET IT RIGHT.

1:37 I don't do a lot of life drawing; I feel like I CAN'T do it...would it be all right if I used live-action shows like iCarly or Nostalgia Critic or other live-action media as reference; I was turned off by life drawing when my family said that if I actually asked a person to draw them, they would brutally punch me, but when I asked a teacher, they said it was ok as long as I didn't do specific details...& even at that, people on my mother's side say that it doesn't look like it. please answer back.
