I wish I had an art teacher like this. Every art teacher in our school is so dumb and doesn't let us be creative how we want to be.

My drawing professor understood that too. I really appreciated his focus on realism cause if we could pull that off our skills can go in any direction. Yet half the class resisted it as much as they could.

I had something similar said about graffiti artists from my highschool art teacher. Being that I was from that background, I took that as a challenge to break out of the habit. As hard as it was, definitely was one of the better decisions to begin improving mentally and visually

both are good, both are art, its up to the viewer as to what they prefer, the creator of the art is absolute

This short really illustrates a good point that the art teacher tends to make as well though: If you learn realism, you'll be able to do anime that much better. She didn't just magically know how to draw this piece because she had done enough dragon ball style, she learned this first so she knew enough fundamentals to match toriyama's style without it looking weird.

@@Danman350 I'm not sure this short is showing that. The art she started with isn't an original design, it's a very famous and widely used picture of Goku in all sorts of media. She could have very easily drawn this specific piece many times until she matched the style, without any help from realism experience. I wouldn't assume the order in which she acquired her skills, though. I'm just saying that you are, and that could be an error. The art teacher would have also erred, because nobody is saying don't learn other styles. We're saying don't judge an artist by preferred style, it is not a limit, it's a bridge.
