The reason why there's so many names at 5:14 is because of how Japanese language & names work. Two Japanese names can sound the exact same, but be written differently (Like a more extreme Catherine vs Katherine situation). Light only knew the phonetic version of the guy's name, so he wrote down every possible kanji combination for Shibuimaru (left column, 2 versions) Takuo (middle column, 3 versions +1 out of frame) he could think of. The right column says 'accidental death' every time. Of course by the time 6:47 rolls around Light's gone balls to wall insane maniac with the Death Note. I forgot how quickly he spirals into megalomania xD

Death note is one of the rare animes to surpass it's own genre audience and actually gotten "normal" people into it cause it's THAT good. For the most part I don't even really like anime, they're all weirdly similar, but death note is just a straight up badass story in ANY genre

8:27 Light was expecting some supernatural existence to collect his soul and he was surprised that he was allowed to use the notebook in whatever way he wanted. because he believed that those who are evil will face karma and he was ready to face karma as he killed so many criminals. This is also why he tried to write as much names as possible before karma strikes him. But when the death god told him there is no consequences using the death note, Light's worldview was changed

I think the voice actor for Light, in particular, was EXCELLENT in the original one; he really could make the double aspect of Light transpire (I mean, the "model student" he wants other people to see, and the real himself), while I always find the English voice actor too monochorde: when he was playing the "Good Light" voice, he always sounded threatening and "evil" to me. I prefer the original one (or the Italian dubbed version, who's also very good, especially in the famous laugh scene. But I can get non-Italian speaker don't know it).

in the beginning he didn't write down a lot of names he wrote every iteration of that guys name because in Japan there's many ways to write it and since he had the guys face in mind it would only kill him

Deathnote! My favorite anime. It changed the game for me when it came out. No USA released anime was like it at the time and it's a rollercoaster. Sure we have tons of stuff like it now as anime as become widely accepted in our media now, but back then in the early 2000's it broadened what anime could be and made a lot of people take notice of anime. Enjoy.

Explanation for why he wrote so many names when he killed that guy on the motorcycle- He heard the guy say his name but didn't know how it was spelt. So he wrote every possible variation until he got the right one.

5:14 All of those are different ways to spell "Shibuimaru Takuo"... Japanese doesn't use alphabet the same way English does... There are symbols for sounds, like 'A' makes the 'ah' sound, in Japanese, た makes the 'ta' sound... た is an example of hirigana... But in addition to that, there are symbols that express entire concepts (kanji)... Kanji can have many different possible readings (how the word sounds when you say them out loud) And most words and names are spelled with kanji... Light didn't know which words are used to spell that specific person's name, so he tried many different ways to write "Shibuimaru Takuo"...

2:33 mistranslated, it makes his actions a bit weird.. in the original japanese sub, he scoffs and puts the book back down noting on how this is no different then those ''Chain Emails'' you get (spam basically) but as he walks away his curiosity gets the better of him and in the next shot you see him walking at the train station with it thinking ''why did i pick this up i must be nuts''

Exactly. Names in Kanji have so many possible variations, and since Light is extremely intelligent, he thought of the most common possible spellings for it and wrote them down just in case.

Aw yeah this one's a banger! You guys will really enjoy it. Both the sub and dub versions are great choices to watch it in. As an adult I still hold this anime in high regard, although it's probably a bit more interesting to see this as a kid. Watching this for the first time when I was close to Light's age, I remember thinking it was it was a valid philosophical question: could it be justified to simply remove "bad people" from society if you could? But obviously as an adult it's immediately crystal clear that Light's choices are heinous and indefensible. What's scary about it now is realizing there are influential adults who share Light's childish conception of humanity and good vs evil.

Light's judgement of good and bad people was far too simplistic. Going after massively corrupt, powerful individuals would be far more effective.

I'm unsure why "heart attack" was the chosen translation because specifics of death are very particular and important to the story. "heart attack" leaves open too many holes for readers/watchers to try and outsmart the method they die of heart _failure_ there is no amount of tylenol or whatever, no amount of medical skill, no amount of luck, that will save you.

The Batman who laughs. Joker but Batman. Actually, it's more like Batman but Joker, because there was originally a Joker in that universe, who tricked Batman into killing him, releasing a special Joker gas that turned Batman into the Joker. Don't question the logic of that, or if secretly this is every Joker's plan, hence trying to break Batman's no kill rule.

I personally hate Death Note but fully encourage your anime adventure! As far as dubs go I still hope you get around to Cowboy Bebop. Or Samurai Champloo both directed by Shinichiro Watanabe maybe just check out the first episode of each?
