Once again, the Anime Boys engage on another sea adventure. This song is titled "Bulljine," which was performed by the legendary Seadogs. This song can be found on their album "The Paddy West School of Seamanship." I hope that you enjoy this. Comments are appreciated. However, please comment positively. It took a great deal of work to complete this.
Oh, and by the way, for those of you who have been making constant requests for a certain Horton song, please wait until the very end.
Much Gratitude,
LDA
P.S. The spoilers at the end are not trying to convey any message or promote any form of political idealism. I do deeply and most humbly apologize if these images have offended, degraded, or insulted anyone who views this clip. I hope that it does not alter your thoughts of me, my personality, beliefs, work, art, and all affiliated, etc. Gramercy...

This song is more often cited as "Liza Lee" I believe. This version is nice, but you may also really like the Dreadnoughts version. Theirs is intense; lots of punch. I love it. I believe the idea behind this song is that they're trying to load the ship as fast as possible for a run from Liverpool to New York, being eager to set sail, the sailor's refrain is "Clear away the track and let the bulgine run!" ie. get this ship loaded and lets go! I believe many, if not most, sea shanties were conceived as a way to coordinate multiple men on a single task, such as weighing anchor or hoisting sails. The rhythm of the song helped everyone concentrate their effort for greater efficiency.

Bullgine is just an older term for any sort of steam locomotive. As for the origins of the song there are many ways it could have originated and it's not impossible sailors got their hands on it and used.

As much as we want to think of sailors during the Golden Age of Piracy (circa 1650-1730) singing sea shantys, the peak of shanty singing was actually the 1860s. While the earliest record of a ship's crew singing is from "The Complaynt of Scotland" (1549), shantys were "cross contaminated" from negro and Irish work songs. Railroads date to the 1830s, and in those days crews of track workers used chants to coordinate sometimes dozens of workers with pry bars to "line and level" track. "Bulljine" may well be a railroad chant run away to sea. "Roll the woodpile down" is supposed to be descended from a song sung by negro stokers feeding wood to the boilers of steamboats.

+Mark Stockman The illustratior clearly knows this! All but four or five of his shanty videos are set on an American whaler circa 1830-1880 or so. The other shanties are set in an era appropriate to the action of the lyrics.

I tend to think that many people overestimate the Bismarck. He isn't nearly as impressive when compared to contemporary ships and knowing the flaws the British still hadn't fixed from WW1. Still, it is an important aspect of history that shouldn't be forgotten. I agree that there is no reason to apologize in any way for this. The song is about *sinking* the Bismarck, and any negative reaction only reflect the ignorance of the complainer. Have you heard the parody "didn't sink the Bismarck?"

@Paradoxmagic I was hardly splittinng hairs. The differance between "flogging" and "lashing" are about the same relationship as stubbing your toe and getting run over by a train. The reason I explained the differance was in an attempt to give you at least a partial answer to your question. Since there is no way from the video to know what his precise offense was, I was letting you know that whatever it was, it was minor.

@Paradoxmagic Actually, he is being flogged with a Cat o' Nine Tails. Flogging was used for a number of minor offenses. Insubordination, mild dereliction, drunkeness, laziness, etc. For more serious offenses he might have received lashes ( from a blacksnake type of whip ), keel hauling, hanging. On the surface the differance between flogging and whipping may seem trivial, but it was far from it. Flogging was very painful. Whipping could be, and often was, deadly or debilitating.

@Gascan, this song isn't about the Bismark specifically. A "bullgine" is a slang word for "engine" and no engine specifically. LordDrakoArakis did post another video called "Anime Boys' Tribute_Sink the Bismark," did you mean to post that comment on that vid?

These anime/sea shanty crossover videos are absolutely amazing!!! Here's a suggestion: maybe you could dry doing some lovely anime drawings to a song like "Dulaman" from Celtic Woman. It's not exactly a sea shanty but it's an Irish song about choosing between two men and it has a very maritime feel to it. I'm just throwing this suggestion out there, but don't stop making these videos! :D

Wow...what an amazing song!!! If anyone wonders, it's "bullgine", and it's a sailors slang for a steam locomotive, or so I read. (Bullgine = engine). Hence "clear away the track and let the bullgine run". Not sure why sailors would be singing about trains, but you know...they were on land sometimes I guess.

It's the same song as Eliza Lee. It has a few different names and variations, like most folk songs. This version is "modified" to be sung by two groups and with a faster tempo.

I just found out that the original lyrics to the songs "Oh Suzanna" refer to a "bullgine" and it busting. "I jump'd aboard the telegraph and trabbled down de ribber, De lectrick fluid magnified, and kill'd five hundred Nigga. De bulgine bust and de hoss ran off, I really thought I'd die; I shut my eyes to hold my bref--Susanna don't you cry". Sounds like "Telegraph" is a boat, so maybe he took a train later, where the "bullgine bust" and then lost his horse?

You talking to me? "Bullgine" still only referred locomotives; so doesn't "clear away the track" and "never behind time", etc. All the sources I saw remarked on how odd it was that sailors sang about a locomotive.

Well, there are bands and singing groups that include children. If you think about it, young boys would have worked on ships, too, so they might have included them for realism.

Those aren't the original lyrics. The ones that I posted are. They changed them to make them more "acceptable". At least those are the lyrics at I found in a half dozen sources. And I'm not comparing the songs, I'm comparing a word in each song. Give me a source for your theory on the origins of "bullgine", I'll add it to the list. All the references I've found so far say it's sailor slang for a steam winch or locomotive. He mentions "going down the river", which suggests a boat or train.

@Paradoxmagic I seriously doubt Bismarck was feared "beyond measure," no more than when sizing up a suitable opponent. And he certainly was NOT the greatest dreadnought: he'd likely lose to the South Dakota class. The Greatest Dreadnought is debated between Yamato and Iowa. Both had bigger guns, thicker armor, better radar, more AA, the list goes on. BTW, I officially request some Star Blazers (Space Battleship Yamato) and the first part of Robotech (Macross) out of respect for anime history.

This is one of my favorite videos but I can't hear what they’re singing. =S The only thin hear is, "Clear the track and let the Buljine run" and that's it! I've tried to find the lyrics to this song but it's seems to be impossible, I've found shorter versions but not the entire shanty (which is a shame since this is a really good shanty and I really like it and want to be able to hear what their singing). Does anybody know where I can find the entire lyrics to this shanty? It would be very thankful if anyone could help me. Have a grate day everybody! =)

song has another more common name "Eliza Lee" you may have better luck with that name, the Dreadnought's version is about 2 verses shorter and in a different order(not uncommon with folk and sea shanties), if you are still looking.
