Anime style edge shading tutorial: RX78-2 Gundam head

You all asked for it and I was finally able to deliver!
The tutorial on how I did the anime style edge shading (or possibly cell shading, that’s still up in the air lol)
I also show you how to add some extra color shadows on the head, which I am not the greatest at but hey, the channel was created to help you try new things!
As a bonus I show my paint haul I got in form usagundam!

Very informative i also had the problem of google searching how to apply 2D art to my Dragon Ball figures/statues. Unfortunately seems like a lot of gate keepers of this art style lmaoo so its like a observe and learn type thing but with much research i was able to find a couple really good informative videos including yours now! Appreciate the thoughts and tips love the community surrounding this art style🌎

I’d use Higgins Black magic ink for panel lining. It’s the most saturated pigment for black. I’d then use either Nulin oil shade or apothecary white contrast paint for shading, the white and what every red acrylic paint matches the source image best.

Wow, it looks really cool. I'm going to try this with one of my PGs. One question though, how do you erase the sharpie ink if you make a mistake?

That’s what makes it so difficult lol ESPECIALLY If you painted before this. Sharpie comes off with alcohol and some light rubbing this can activate acrylic layers and remove them. So just be extra careful and practice on spare parts

Dude! That is great! I'm new to fine tuning my gunpla and this is definitely something to consider especially since I'm trying to find my signature style. Would you have any pointers for bringing out the details in something black?

Thank you! Oh yeah man it’s always nice to take a style and tweak it and make it your own! When working with black you can highlight with a semi bright blue, or even a blue gray to make it pop! I would lean more on the blue/gray side though, something like P3’s gravedigger denim color or SMS’s blue/grey are two colors that come to mind

Manga ink and manga brush would have a better consistent look. Try to use the propper inks.

For anybody reading this, do this with a Gundam marker. Sharpies end up having a purple effect

You are 100% correct. I didn’t learn this until after I finished the video but if you clear coat over the sharpie it prevents the purple effect from happening

For the flat armor panels, you're not panel lining right? You trace the inner and outer lines of the indent?

Yes, you could create your own effect by panel lining with a really dark black and using a lighter black for your lines to add depth

@@NotSoAverageBuilder I just finished this style on a haropla. I found out something interesting. For the shaded parts, i used a very light coat of clear black (tint). You’re very welcome! I will be beginning work on the Mega Sized RX78 soon and I will use acrylic paints for the edge lining. The problem with sharpie is that it can “blue” over time and look off. So be careful with that unless you use a UV cut top coat like that from Mr. hobby

@@NotSoAverageBuilder Awesome!!! I also go through USAGundam Store here and there....good service. I've picked up all the HiRM kits from them.......Hmmm Mega size eh? I'll have to watch your video......for me its either MG, PG , HiRM or nothing at all I won't touch an HG , RG or a non grade with a ten foot pole just due to details and not wanting to spend hours on something which doesn't meet the standard.

I'd quite like to replicate this look on some of mini's but unfortunately I think the scale would make it beyond difficult (1:285 if memory serves).

It would be a challenge but most (if not all) of your line work could be done with a small paintbrush. I would pick up a larger mini to practice on to hone your skills and then move to a smaller one to see how it goes!

id love to get my hands on a mega size kit to paint it anime style, but their like $300 atm, ive never tried this style so im gonna try it out a hg, might be a bit hard to do the edges on such a small scale, but ill work it out

If you’re in the states USAgundamstore.com has them for $98 so that’s a considerably cheaper price point lol I have one and I will eventually do it up in the anime style to match the head. I’ve just been talking with artists and some of the Japanese model builders to figure out how to make my anime style better. Dude I will tell you this, if you can do it on an HG kit you will 100% nail any of the larger ones lol

Yes but with just basic acrylic paints nothing special. You could potentially just sand the entire thing before you give it the cell shading so you’re sharpie and other paints will adhere better

The main colors were acrylics and the lines were done with a sharpie. I would recommend using a brush and acrylic paints to do the lines because sharpie can turn blue over time.

Oh yeah the shading was done with scale75 paints graphite grey :) you can mix a dark grey with white to get a lighter shade or even black to give yourself a darker shade

I haven’t applied a top coat to the sharpie yet. But when I do I will be using Mr. hobby UV cut clear to help prevent the sharpie from turning orange over time

The short answer...very carefully lol the long answer, I would get a brand new sharpie and go very slowly over the hard edges, and really take your time. I would get a non water based clear coat and apply it over the parts first (that way you can take some rubbing alcohol to remove any mistakes) It is just going to take a lot of time to do
