Anita Baker and Babyface Fallout over Delayed New Jersey Show

Last night during the New Jersey stop of Anita Baker’s 15-date “The Songstress” tour, concertgoers became disgruntled and disappointed. Not only did fans report waiting two hours for the “Sweet Love” singer to hit the stage, but ticket holders also did not get to see co-headliner Babyface perform.
Adding to the chaotic night, one fan told VIBE that she witnessed a lady passing out while waiting for the show to start and that a fight also erupted in the audience.
In another video, the host of the show could be seen getting booed after announcing to ticket holders that there were “technical difficulties” - which he claimed caused the delay.
“First of all I want to thank everyone for coming out tonight,” he began. “We did have some technical difficulties tonight. However, Ms. Baker isn’t going anywhere ya’ll she’s coming out tonight. Unfortunately because of these delays Ms. Baker wanted to be sure that she gave ya’ll the best that she could give.”
“So unfortunately Babyface will no longer be performing. I deeply, deeply apologize,” he added as the audience roared with “boos” out of frustration.

I have seen Anita Baker in concert twice and I would never do it again even if the tickets were free. The first time she was by herself, 15 minutes into the show she started telling the sound people she couldn't hear herself sing. The band didn't know what to do so they kept playing. All of a sudden she stops singing and walks off the stage. The band and her back up singers were all just looking at each other like they weren't sure what to do. A couple of people came up on the stage and started checking the equipment. This went on for about 15-20 minutes. She finally comes back on the stage, gives no explanation or apology sings for about 30 minuted and said goodnight Sacramento, you all have been wonderful. About 2 years later she was with Luther in Oakland and I thought she would not dare pull what she pulled while touring with Luther so I got tickets. Boy was I wrong, she did the exact same thing only this time before she left the stage she screamed at the sound person, calling him by name and saying his boss was talking to him. And once again she left the stage, but Luther was coming up so I was frankly glad when she got her ass off the stage so an entertainment professional could take over. Luther fired her off the tour the next day. So after all these years, I guess she is still unprofessional.

I've also seen and heard the opposite. Both can be true. She is a great live performer sometimes and sometimes not. Some of her live performances I've seen on RU-vid from years ago are the greatest concerts I've ever seen in life to this day. The way she sings live is amazing. It really does make me sad that this is happening because I love her gift.

I saw her in Vegas about 4 years ago and almost the exact thing happened. I was sooo frustrated as we flew across the country for the show as a mothers day gift!😫😫 I gave her a pass for wanting to be perfect but now seeing that it's a pattern is even more disappointing.

I saw Anita in Switzerland, she was anazing and on time. But she gave her sound engineer a hard time. Telling him he was making her sing too hard!!!

I've heard she's a perfectionist very difficult to work with....she need let it go just be free. DOG!!! IT JUST TAKES AWAY FROM HER. That's why I said I wasn't going and that's all I do for fun is concerts.

This reminds me of the Luther Vandross stories - I have seen Face several times he is timely and very professional with all the artists he toured with . Both Aries artist (Face & LV) - two perfectionists and wanting to give Fans the best show . By the way Anita Baker has jurisdiction over the venue . Headliners always make the final decision.

Most people don't know the artist can't perform past the set end time of the venue. They should do a makeup show for those fans. I remember Prince did a complete makeup show just because he came back EXTREMELY late for his one encore song.

I’ve seen Ms. Anita Baker in concert at the Chicago Theatre & she was “almost” 2-hours late coming to the stage! Now I must say she killed it & gave an excellent show with no interruptions, but my time is valuable & even, Ms. Baker is not worthy of 2-hours of my time that I did not agree to give. Also, I heard that Babyface was asked to leave & not perform; in order to give Ms. Baker enough time to complete her set, because she was the main runner. So that’s not rude of Babyface, that was keeping it professional. However, it appears to me that Ms. Baker consistently has timing issues & this is very unprofessional; I don’t care who you are. @ Ms. Anita Baker, this is not “Giving us the best that you’ve got”!👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾 This is simply not cool & very disrespectful…

That song reference/placement was excellent. Kudos 🥂 You know, hopefully in the future, Ms. Baker gains a little more appreciation for her fans’ valuable time. And just because one is literally thee best artist EVER ❤️, she should still be considerate and watch your step with respect to the fans. We can all understand that sometimes delays do happen, and while you may personally not question how does it feel, or really even feel the need to explain your lateness, that does not mean your ticket holders don’t deserve to be told. And instead of taking the diva route, as she kinda does lately, just simply starting off the show with the words I apologize might be a bit more considerate. Absolutely no one in the world wants to pay big ticket prices only to have management come on stage and tell us there ain’t no need to worry because the songstress we’ve all paid big $$$ to see is running big late. Or even worse, have them lie and make up random fairy tales or stories just to keep us quiet. Personally, I’d rather have the artist herself just talk to me and tell me exactly what’s up. Ignoring the delayed start time just makes it more serious than it even needs to be. When you love someone the way we fans absolutely love Anita, body and soul, and most importantly, that VOICE(!), we absolutely do give this heavenly angel forgiveness. And I know in my heart that Ms. Baker, like no one in the world, will eventually, put on a damn good show! I love me some Anita Baker ❤️

Babyface doesn’t have to clarify anything. HE DID NOT GET TO PERFORM FOR HIS FANS. Headliner my ass., I would say Babyface has contribute far more to the music industry than Anita Baker, so for that reason, he deserves the respect. Damn, she could’ve given him at least 30 minutes.

ANY information would of been nice. Maybe a general announcement to quell all the bad feelings from the crowd. We all stood around with only 1 single bartender, barely enough food selections other than to "herd" most people into the pricey lounge area. What a disgrace by the Prudential Center!! I paid almost three hundred dollars for a half a concert. Miss Baker tried her best but was constantly trying to get the reverb and sound right. As compensation I invite Miss Baker to come and perform at my house to sing anytime!!

I agree with your commentary ... Babyface was very unprofessional here .... These venues are union and trust they are very very strict with EVERYTHING especially time ... A lot of the performance and theater spaces experience this ... Audiences just know that they are in the space to see a show .. Live Nation should have taken the lead on this and made everything.veey clear to the audience and all ticket holders ...they take your $$$ then leave you to swim in presumptions and innuendos .. They should give a refund to the people .. 🙏🏾..

I was at the concert yesterday. First off, I want to say Anita Baker put on a show. She is truly the Songstress. They started letting people in the arena about 6 pm. I had floor seats but they were not letting people onto the floor because they were still performing sound checks. People waited around for a bout 2 hours and a little after 8 they started seating people. Babyface setup was on the stage. Then around 8:45, they started to remove the equipment for Babyface's set. The crowds was booing and getting antsy. That's when the promoter at the beginning came out and made the announcement about Babyface not performing. Through out Anita Baker performance she kept talking to the sound man about her microphone not having reverb and the feedback. He wasn't getting it. She mentioned how true singing is a lost art form and I agree. How the technicians feel they need to continue to play with the knobs, no..... We got this!!!!!! and She was right. Her voice sounded amazing. Every song sounded so good. Even songs like Body and Soul where as she says "Did we rehearse this one?' sounded amazing.

The issue was also there were NO announcements about what was going on. I assumed when Babyface's band set up was being disassembled he was NOT performing but that was not announced until say 30 mins after it was done..There was no DJ or entertainment provided during the entire time either. Sound check was still going on when we entered you could hear Face's band going thru the Cool in You. They could have started his set at say 8:15..

I do agree with that as legendary artist we should be behave like this. Evidently, BabyFace thought Anita was the problem and not the promoters. Anita Baker is definitely legendary, and I expect better behavior from all of them including Stephanie Mills being shady. 😅

I couldn't even qet tickets last year when she was here and tickets were going for $800. I don't know if Babyface tours alone lately but if his fan base is equal to Anita's he should tour alone or with Stephanie Mills and her shady self.

I was there at that show and here’s what happened…The show was to start at 7 ,we stood in the hallway for over an hour..We heard the soundcheck which was NOT Babyface..When they finally let us in,we sat another 45-to an hour waiting for the show start..The show finally started at 9:20 by 10-15/25 people were leaving while she was performing….She continued to complain about the sound from the speakers/and we basically sing her songs for her…To have the show go this way and still didn’t see Babyface our $$$ should be returned..Funny how HE(Babyface) had “technical difficulties “ but she still went on inspire of that…However she did sound excellent I’ll give her that….

Awhile ago, God gave me a prophetic dream of Anita Baker on stage...and the audience was suddenly offended, got up, and walked out. Kenneth Babyface Edmonds has established a brand based on Love, Chivalry and Respect. So for him to fall on the sword for the prudential center's lack of professionalism this is consistent with the Gentleman that he is. There was no fall out between He and Ms. Baker. They are both R and B Royalty, icons...and they have blessed us all with their gifts and talents for many decades. Unfortunately this Venue didnt have their stuff tight and so everyone suffered. Kudos to Kenny for handling it like a real G. Great show Ms. Baker. Love you both. Maybe in these instances moving forward...there should be a room put aside where artist can do an 'Alternative live" show that can be rebroadcast exclusively for ticket holders and paying patrons.

It sounds like two slight different explanations of what happened. Rbey both agree that there wss technical problems but he added mire clarity to his explanation. He daid that " he was asked not to perform" to alliw her the needed to r yo oervorm het full set. To her credit she did at least say ' it wasn't his fault". I'm sure that it sucks for the fans who paid to see them both nonetheless. Who was responsible for the technical difficulties. Don't they have to do a mandatory soundcheck before the show? That would/ should have avoided the technical difficulties in my opinion.

I love her and saw her twice but the first time she was close to 2 HOURS LATE....AFTER the OPENING ACT left the stage. The crowd was PISSED and she actually sang a Tina Turner medley! Nobody wanted to hear it. Then she had to be begged to sing Angel, and asked the crowd to help her do it! Folks didn't pay to hear themselves or others sing...they came to see YOU. The next time I saw her at an outdoor venue, she was great. So maybe this was an off night.

"technical difficulties"? what an insultingly vague explanation. had the promoters been forthright with the audience, babyface would not have been able to junp onto social media and point the finger at anita baker nor would stephanie mills been able to spout uninformed accusations of disrespect.

There is some stuff in the game. When she waited so long to even come back, I had lost interest in her. This makes me feel she can be a challenge to get along with. Babyface will always be my guy. After I saw the shade and disrespect she threw Anita's way a few months ago I lost all respect for her and I couldn't even name one of her songs. I know people love Stephanie and she is deservedly well respected but I would listen to Anita the rest of my life before her.
