In a matter of weeks Ann went from being a healthy, active wife, mother and competitive tennis player to being a liver transplant recipient. Liver failure most often occurs gradually over many years, however, acute liver failure, a more rare condition, occurs rapidly (in as little as 48 hours) and can be difficult to detect initially.
