This is one of my favourite novels. I studied Anna Karenina many, many years ago when I was at university and have probably read it at least five times in total. One piece of advice I would give, without any spoilers, is that when reading the novel, I think the reader should bear in mind the citation before part one "Vengeance is mine; I will repay."
That "two for one" joke with the t-shirts was greatly appreciated. I see what you did there, Krypto. 😅 And yes! I think you hit on something, and a major reason this novel is so well read today (apart form it just being Tolstoy). It is really not a complicated novel, and does have a very simple structure. I would put this novel in the very rare category of "perfect novel." Despite Levin's farming. 😅
I think I know what happened to Anna In relationship to little Anna. Not only was the birth incredibly difficult, I believe she had post-partum depression. It doesn’t happen with child one, but common with 2nd birth. The drugs also contribute. Such a term was not known in Tolstoy’s day. But Tolstoy still described it non the less.
Guys, did you know that Tolstoy insisted that right way to pronunce family name of his character is not Levin, but Lyovin? But most of readers in Russia didn't know that fact too.
I with y'all! Thanks for taking us all through this classic. Great insight in the symbolism of the horse and the "battle" etc in the beginning of Part Two. I'm almost to Part Three.
well done, guys! it is sooo refreshing to watch this after closing the first three chapters. Buddy reading this with a friend and it's been awesome, eye-opening and complete listening to your wonderful analysis. Thank you.
Hell yes! I love love this book. Cannot wait to watch you guys move through this. Also love how you put all these together, but film overtime! And just wow, the character map and the way you show us this is so good! Pausing at Part 1, to get back to work, but cant wait to finish!
I hate the opening line, I’ve met several people from unhappy families exactly the same as mine while many happy families are different. It’s a traditionalist statement but the characters are so complex and this review is amazing.
How much time does pass by between Levin confessing his love to Kitty and gets rejected and until Levin returns to Kitty a second time and she confirms her love to him? Thank you!
Well, my question has been answered, stated in the comment before! How long is Levin gone until he returns to Kitty to ask her if she wants to merry him? Thank you!
I love this! I am interested in the discussion of the focus on intellect versus action. The characters who are trying to live a congruent life where their internal beliefs match their external actions are the ones who have my sympathy (I’m thinking of Dolly, Kitty, and Levin).
I’m at the ending of part 2 and this is so far one of the best novels I ever read. And your discussion on this has only made it better. You guys made connections that I definitely missed. This is great, thank you
“ him and Anna”. Yikes. Nominative case. Should be He and Anna predicate. Today, people are tossing the objective and subject totally backwards. I mean, you are discussing literature. But discussions are great non the less.
