Just watched this again...What a great concept, changing all those things so as to create a "familiar" yet completely different sided book! And, the effects of the video itself are really REALLY great. I know you're a writer but you also have film and directing skills, to boot. WTG! ✍️🖋️✏️🖊️✏️👊

Thanks for the kind words, BHBC. Always fun to tweak books or read them with a different context in mind.

I was thinking the other day that I was hoping for a new PaperBird video soon - and here you are! Your video is as beautiful and strange as always 😊 Thank you! I have Ice, so look forward to see what I think about it. Have a lovely evening 😊

Hi Silje, yes would love to hear what you think of Ice on one of your reading episodes. btw, have you read any Jens Bjørneboe? i might give him a read next

@@PaperBird I haven't read him for years, but both the Moment of Freedom trilogy and The Sharks made a deep impact on me when I read them. I should probably reread them at some point. Which one of his books do you consider picking up? 😊

Hi Silje, I just got the first book of the Moment of Freedom trilogy in the mail today. someone from Norway recommended him. i hadn't heard of him before but I gather he's well known and controversial over there

Your book remixes remind me of the sampling done in music, like hip hop. Very cool concept that Ive never heard of before your channel. Keep up the original thinking. Would love to read a little bit of these little experiements/Street Fighter fights between authors.

I read this in one sitting a few months ago..very impressionistic and alot of the images are still stuck in me. But I was struggling with feeling 'manipulated' too..what do you think of the 'slipstream' genre in general? Is it an excuse to not have to get a coherent plot hammered down? Or would doing so just ruin the dreamy/hypnagogic quality? I saw a reference to Steve Erickson too, whose 'The Sea Came in at Midnight' was like Don Delillo somehow diving deeper and going off the rails at the same time. Anyways, cool vid again! I love your brand of literary critique/thoughtstreaming/visual fidelity

I like that kind of writing if it has an organic feel to it, less so if it’s done by intentional genre benders (usually because they have a less interesting prose style). Plot may not be in line with that kind of exploration so much, at least the stuff I enjoy reading. Ice felt organic and laid down some tracks ahead of its time -- my favorite parts were when the narrative would skip tracks and the boxcar would get flipped around to new, sometimes impossible perspectives. But over time the fumes felt “not so fresh” feeling :) I really like novels where characters blend into other characters. Erickson is one of my favorite writers who can do this, actually. He can also bend History in extremely interesting ways. Thanks for the comment. Who are some other writers you enjoy?
@domenicmolinaro6580
@domenicmolinaro6580 5 лет назад
@@PaperBird I agree with the sentiment about laying down tracks beforehand..I guess that is the equivalent of plot/reader trust for slipstreamers. Looking forward to reading more Erickson. For slipstream, I've been interested in the work of Kelly Link of late. Normally I tend to read alot of 'literary' noir/hardboiled stuff: Jean-Patrick Manchette's 'Three to Kill' and Nelson Algren's 'Man with the Golden Arm' being two of my favorites. Also, for 'literary' sci-fi, Greg Egan's 'Permutation City'.

Wow, ironic how this video, from the cutting style to the way it disconceptualizes the book's story, takes me back to another era... like an end-of-the-twenty-teens glimpse back at the more 90s-influenced part of the (raunchy) 2000s. But then it just leaves me there. Turns out the book has aged better than the review. Time to revamp... because in the year 2024, "Ice" deserves to not only be as far as digitally possible from fart jokes, but given some serious respect for the prophetic, timeless classic it clearly is. (still enjoyed this video though ;) )

hey paperbird, im a huge fan of your content and have commented before yet I could never comment enough to do you justifce. your videos are art! this idea is genius, and I hope it isnt rude of me to ask, and I know it has been a long time but do you have a copy of the inverted book or "fire" if you will? if not, do you have the transcript for words to flip and to what as I saw on the sidelines that you used some sort of guideline which you edited onto a PDF, I am beyond intrigued to compare!
