DISCOUNT! The chaps at PYI have just emailed me and said our viewers can get the boat show discount on all their great stuff (they have the MaxProp and Fendertex fenders amongst other things), check out their website pyiinc.com and use the code FAIRISLE
We have some friends who had a small cameo in your video, and unfortunately, we didn't have a chance to introduce you to them. Perhaps next year. Great video! Heidi
The blue system looks very interesting! No need for big lungs or a diving compressor if you aren't into Scuba diving already. Hylas is a really nice boat!
Hydrovane.....British engineering at its best. When I collected mine from Kirkby in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire where they are manufactured I met the originator and designer, Derek Daniels.
Saw you charging through the crowd on Saturday and was a bit surprised because I hadn't realized you were coming. A wet day for sure. We live a few hours away at the beach so we drove in for the day. Looked at a lot of the same things you did and played around with the propellers. They are little engineering marvels.
It was great running into you both on Main St. on Friday afternoon. You were clearly in a rush to get to dinner (?), so it was a quick "hello, love your channel" as we passed each other. Hope to catch you next year. BTW -- you cannot go wrong with those Fendertex inflatables. A friend bought a set a couple of years ago for his catamaran (big brother to Franny and Heidi's model). Hope you enjoy the rest of your time on this side of the pond!
Thank you, sorry we couldn’t stop Friday was a bit mad, we had our time in the YT tent then had to run to the awards ceremony. We are getting the fenders Judy loves how light they are
We too were drawn to the Bluewater and the Outbound 46. But dishwasher? Come on. All that storage wasted for something easily done by hand? And you know it is going to malfunction anyway. Fantastic space for guests. Also, cabin for work bench-very useful. But again, king bed in aft cabin? How many NBA players will sail Bluewaters? Thank you for posting.
Steve, c'Mon man these are all gadgets, no real sailors. Your vessel is so superior. With all due respect to the excited Bluewater owner, that is a boring interior of gadgets and makeshift for the rich.
I disagree, the Bluewater is without doubt the closest thing to a an HC for a solid wood interior that I’ve seen. It even has wood lining the inside of the hull like Fair Isle for insulation & no condensation. It’s cedar not teak but teak is just too precious to use in that way now. And we didn’t show it there because we showed a Hylas last week that has the same set up, but the engine access is superb, I think that island galley area is genius. Don’t worry I’m still happy with Fair Isle and wouldn’t swap her but that’s for other reasons, there ARE other boats that can match the quality interior. Makes you wonder why all the other expensive new boats think it’s okay to chuck a load of IKEA furniture in theirs!
Judy and Steve, Wow! Amazed how fast you were able to pull this content together. Great to see you were able to stay with Franny & Heidi in our marina. Great boat show! So much to see in 2 days (that’s all we had). Great to see you guys!
If it was an older video it would be Dominion. We've now otten over our Dominion addiction and tend to play normal card games, it's been Spite and Malice this season
That Bluewater Yacht is pure gorgeousness. Did Hylas go out of business and Bluewater take over though? What's the deal with it being a modified Hylas hull?
No Hylas are very much still in business and making very nice yachts. But they have gone the way of almost all the other modern boats and changed the hull shape to give more volume inside - massive cockpit - large aft cabin etc. All very well for weekend sailors and marina queens but personally not what I would pick to cruise in. Kyle bought the mold for the hull and is keeping the old style going (and improving on it) which I think is a very good thing. Now someone just needs to do the same with Hallberg Rassy and Oyster!
Great episode and we spent a lot of time with PYI and bought 6 of the Fendertex larger fenders. We also have the max-fold prop, and it is a brilliant piece of kit. I have to admit the wooden platters are actually a brilliant design for charcuterie, and when we use them with guests on board, they rave. I really liked the design of the one the CEO showed you of them. It was amazing to see you two at the boat show, and we always consider it an honor and gift to spend a bit of time with you.
It was great to spend time with you all, we are looking forward to having you on the boat (and seeing yours) Glad you went for the Fendertex fenders, new fenders were not high on our priority list but they seem so good we really want some! I think my MaxProp is due a service, but I will wait until we get State side I think and take it to PYI, they seem a really good company.
There should be a big one at the end of the video and on out YT home page, but also if you click on the little symbol in the bottom right hand corner of ever video you will find a Subscribe button that pops up
You’ll find that most ocean going yachts (well maybe not the new ones that call themselves oceangoing but aren’t really!) have the head fairly high. That’s because they sit in the water not on it. This means if the head is mounted on the sole there’s a long way to pump the waste up and over the anti siphon which causes problems. Fair Isle is the same.
Very interesting viewing. You touched on 4 items that are on my, to get list,. But hay, there's a lot to be done on my boat before any of these things can be thought about. The prop would be the first thing. I don't like the way mine spins once I'm doing more than 4 knots. & the extra bite in reverse would be a welcome addition. Thanks fair isle. Keep up the good work. SV Kiwi Lady Opua Bay of islands New Zealand 👍🏿
Yes the MaxProp is a work of art, it might be worth you having a word with the guys at PYI as they’ve given our viewers the boat show discount on any orders (very nice of them since all we bought was grease!) Even if you don’t need it for a while they might keep the offer open for you, worth a try!
I was thinking of a Hooka . but went with a mantus tank instead , and I got a small compressor on board that runs off the inverter and fills the tank in about 20 minutes. No hoses to swim with and I get about 25 minutes underwater depending on the depth .
O'right Guys!!! I made it in one of your videos!!! (in the background with Precision Sails) LOL :) It was awesome finally meeting you guys, hopefully see you again soon somewhere on the otherside of the pond! lol
Enjoyed the 'film' as always. Glad you enjoyed the show, the technology improves constantly. Curious what safety training they include in the tankless dive system (eg never hold your breath !). You can still get into trouble at 15 or 30ft. Maybe get a dive computer to track your nitrogen status if you will be using it multiple times per day (no diving 24 hours before a flight).
Personally I'm against nannying people too much. Anyone who dives and has any common sense should educate themselves on safe practices, it's not difficult. We've done a couple of dive courses over the years, but last time I put out a video on diving we had people harping on about certification, lets hope we never have to live in a world that makes you get certified to cross the street!
I’m old and English, so what a lovely treat to hear fractions inches and feet ….mostly gone ,along side, splice the mainbrace. what’s next to lose GMT - knots? I’ve still got my lignvity serving mallet and caulking iron ,\ worm parcel and serve \ Days gone by. You do my sailing for me now? ?
Suggest looking at your video regarding props . Long keel steers perfectly astern .I had a william garden vagabond 47 and it was easy steering astern @@svfairisle
Interesting, we have a patron with a Vagabond I will ask him. Must be some sort of magic going on there I've never been on any full keel boat where you get even an ounce of steerage from the rudder going astern (unless you're going stupid speeds) I can turn Fair Isle rudder through full lock and it wont make the slightest difference to how we track in reverse. Doesn't matter of course there are many other ways of maneuvering a full keeled boat and we manage to get in the tightest of spots with no bother, but having a reversing prop is key to that which was the point of the discussion.
Most basic houses in this area and surrounding states cost more than the boats by a bit. The cost of living is also high. You could sell your house locally and buy a used version of one of these and come out ahead and then go find a place to anchor that is cheaper. For the 40' range of monohull you could sell your small low end condo and do the same. That said most people are looking just to see what the new thing is and at least some of those buying were forming a partnership with several other parties to buy the boat. There are not many of the high end boats built per year. For sure few if any of the attendees were conspicuously wealthy. Certainly none that I saw. If you were that wealthy why would you go rub elbows with the common folk?
I am thinking of electric bikes as well, but just a note of caution, that throttle that Steve liked wouldn't be legal on UK roads. We have fairly limited motor options here as well, still you may not need to bike British roads for some time!
That's interesting, I wonder why, the UK's not usually into banning things! Sadly we dont have room on Fair Isle for bikes though so it's just a dream!
@@svfairisle I think it is Pedal throttle only and up to 250watt motor, although there appear to be a few bikes that have got round this with an off road switch, where rules don't apply.
@@judyaslett6209 Very much in agreement with you on that. Hoping for the day when power assist bikes are as easy and reliable to rent as cars. In Manhattan, where we live, the main bike share system is expensive, poorly maintained, (btw one-size doesn’t fit all) and often unavailable. Not to mention the biking infrastructure is very dodgy in spots and generally not for the feint of heart. We keep bikes in our apt but it’s a pita and a heavy ebike is simply a no go for space, elevator access and conforming to fire codes. New condo/coop lease riders are restricting if not outright banning ebikes from high density multifamily dwellings.
@@svfairisle it just seemed more elegant. A classic design that never changed much . Even tho it was a new design it still had the old flavor from 2018 or 19 . And it was the first boat I drooled over . They remind me of a Tayana55 but with a proper interior design. Something Tayana lacked by letting customers pick and choose everything. None are the same . I think another example would be the amels a proper design growing over years . I’d like to see the Hylas 57 with the darker finish on the interior. The cream of the crop for me was a video called Hylas 54 sailing Yacht walkthrough 600 grand . Gratitude, Denison yachting .
@@briandale8386 Well interior fit out is a very personal choice I suppose but don’t forget the sailing! The main reason I think the Bluewater is a different class to the updated Hylas is that it’s retained a proper hull shape. For me the Hylas has sold out (along with the vast majority of monohulls) into having the beam go too far back to give more interior space and a large cockpit at the expense of open sea handling. You need twin rudders to steer the new Hylas something I personally would never consider having on a Bluewater boat
Can’t you get a Hylas h 48 that’s the typical single skeg hung rudder . I think a Dixon design . Or a 60 that’s a single skeg hung rudder design by Freers right now that’s new . Maybe he changed the design to a twin rudder 2019 . Seems harsh calling them a sell out after all the hard work people have put into the brand Hylas . Bluewater should try and use the name Tayana . Meaning Belongs to the ocean. If thats the grift your going for .
@@briandale8386 Yes would have loved to have seen the 48 but they only had the 56 at the show. No surprise really as that’s what this is all about. The modern design look great at a show, you don’t see what’s under the water just the lovely spacious interior. I’m certain this is what’s driving this worrying trend in boat design, they just sell well. And I’m sorry but although I don’t doubt the effort put in, I think ‘sell out’ is exactly the right term for that!
About Hydrovane I'll give you my twopence for what's worth. I've followed the first two GGR (Golden Globe race) organized by McIntyre. In both races, apart from the boats who capsized, the major cause for retiring from the race on the part of many boats was the windvane failure. As you can imagine navigating nonstop for more than one year and crossing storming oceans was a very hard work for the windvanes of the fleet, and a test of its strength and functionality. Hydrovane was clearly the winner, even if one or two of this brand had some mechanical breakage (easily reparired if you had the spare parts) the majority arrived to the finish line in perfect form. Quite an accomplishment.
Yes don’t worry I’ve talked to Don and also Jean-Luc. As you say Hydrovanes performed very well indeed. Jean-Luc replaced the locking pin with a bolt thinking it would be more secure, it broke quite quickly! He then put back the original pin and it lasted the rest of the way around the world. In the latest edition the only failure was from drilling another hole through the main shaft for a second retaining pin. This weakened the shaft and it broke in sever weather. Moral of the story, don’t mess with it!
Wow it really bothers me. Many of the RU-vid channels smaller than yours were sent a complimentary diving system. I can’t remember which brand off hand. Your Chanel is one of the best. Thank you for another wonderful episode
We like to choose what products we have on board so we make sure we keep the quality up. I do think it's good that some manufacturers want YT channels to test gear though, it shows they are confident in their product.

( 28:35 ) Cats are an essential part of daily life !😻 this one should have had an introduction 😸 / I also saw Ben & M.P from Sailing Yaba at the awards show , I hope I'll get to see the winning Cat clip on another Cruisers channel ? your videos are very enjoyable 👍
