@@RighteousnessWillPrevail Have you paid much attention over the last 20 years? Critical thinking doesn't work when the baseline for 95% of the population is imbecile.
Mankind is so horrendous to each other. This young woman was persecuted and tortured without good reason. Yet she clung to her faith and endured without betraying anyone or herself. How unique and strong she was. A historical recount that while disturbing is very notable.
Thank you for telling Anne Askew’s story. She was so incredibly brave, so much so that she redefines it. She was truly a one of a kind. R.I.P. Anne Askew
She does more than "rest in peace"...she rejoices in the arms of her precious Saviour ( which is the promise to anyone who trusts in the finished work of Jesus on the cross)!
This is why systems must be in place which prevent evil from perpetrating this kind of horror. When systems break down, evil will seize the opportunity to slither through the cracks and do these kinds of dreadful things.
She was a christian. When a person gives their life to Christ and believes on Him, then they are adopted into Gods family. They belong to Him and that person gets everything they need from the Lord, including strength and courage. There are many stories of Christians enduring terrible things, even in the last hundred years.
The horrendous torture of Anne Askew is unspeakable. How she stuck to her guns and would not give in is truly incredible. It's almost impossible to comprehend such courage in the face of such horror!. And she was not the only one. Many others of similar conviction were tortured in Britain but sadly their stories have been lost over the years. These unbelievably wicked acts should never be forgotten. There are very old books such as Foxe's Book Of Martyrs which contains many such accounts including the story of Anne Askew.
The reality is much darker for both sides. William of Orange literally waited for his opponents to ship all the women and children to an island for safekeeping. As soon and the Catholics were back on shore William’s men boarded boats and rowed to the island and slaughtered every infirm man, woman and child there. None were left alive. To this day it is celebrated by the Orange Order as they march.
@@Dr.Pepper001 of course it is! Wouldn't be a good story if she had talked and begged and screamed for mercy, as she almost surely did. No one survived the rack without breaking.
@@Dr.Pepper001 Foxe’s book of martyrs is true! Just bcz catholics say it is propaganda is hog wash! Martin Luther fought against those rascals just to give us all the chance to read the Bible for ourselves! Instead of the church trying to tell us their version. The early christians WERE indeed tortured for their faith much like this poor woman was. That is TRUTH! Not propaganda! I feel awful they suffered but now they are in the hands of the Lord & comforted forever more!!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼😬 🙏🏼 Ps. Wether they cried & screamed or told all. They WERE martyred & endured terrible torture. Truth!
Is she the reason we say things like "his limbs were askew?" Never heard this. Thank thee for learning me something new this day. As always ,great work, Mr Hicks.
Thanks for the video. My family is descended from Askew. Her story is very important to us so thanks for sharing it. She is an incredible woman no matter where you land on religious beliefs. She was a woman of strength and principle.
I have a genetic disorder called Ehlers Danslo Syndrome, basically my connective tissue doesn't function as it should. My joints are very prone to dislocating. You are absolutely spot on with your descriptions of what it would have been liked for Anne to have her tendons torn thus causing her joints to dislocate and the unbearable pain she would have been in. My joints are unstable because of the genetic defect of my tendons, ligaments and muscles which allows my joints to slide around uncontrollably. There are days that I can't function because of the pain I am in. Anne's hips and spine would have also been affected by the damage done to her tendons and ligaments as they stretched her by her wrists and ankles as they tortured her on the rack. This have been the reason the accounts described her as being in agony and in so much pain as she was jostled about on the chair she was chained to as she was carried to the stake. She was incredibly brave to not have confess under such conditions as she was tortured on the rack. Great research!!
This was extremely interesting to me. My father actually did our family's genealogy and discovered that we are related to Anne Askew. I thought she was executed because she was a witch. But a heretic is not exactly the same as a witch. Thank you for enlightening me.
She is incredible. The world knows nothing close to a woman's pure strength. Thank you for including women's history, we are often "left out" and forgotten on purpose in order to make us believe tht our ancestor's were not strong!
I love stories about brave and courageous women. Anne is a saint. And I will look to learn more about her. Thank you for telling this story. People who suffer for their faith deserve recognition.
I'm not in the least religious, but I do admire Ann for her devotion to her faith and incredible bravery. She is a woman whose sacrifice should never be forgotten.
I'd heard of her and her fate before but it lacked definition and detail! You drought color and personality to her, in a way, justice that she never got in life. Had she had latitude to continue her life, who knows what advancements she could have brought to English literature and culture. Thank you for that Kevin and History Squad!
What a woman. I wonder how she would have felt to know in life that so many people would still hear about her commitment and sacrifice all these years later?
I wonder how many of us Christians today would remain faithful unto death under similar circumstances.”Lord I want to be a Christian in my heart.” … Do we “Stand up, stand up for Jesus, we soldiers of the Lord!”? Every day?
Thank you very much for telling the Tragically cruel story of poor Anne Askew, what that young woman went through was truly barbaric. You told her story with great empathy and made listening to her story very interesting.
I've just stumbled upon your channel and I am HOOKED! Tudor history is a passion of mine and I know these stories well but how wonderful it is to listen to the way you tell them! You're a great storyteller and presenter. Lots of love from New Zealand.
My hats off to you. Such a dark topic and yet you found such an eloquent way to relive the tail without getting into the details that that would be fodder for nightmares tonight. I also appreciate that you presented all the relevant versions as each departure offers an interesting way to imagine the story going. Thank you as always and I really appreciate this channel as those that do not understand history are doomed to repeat it right?
If Hell were real, H8 and Hitler would be there patiently waiting for Donald Trump to join them. Alas, I fear the only Hell that is real is right here on Earth.

Man that was a tough one to hear, I could literally feel that description of her torture!!!! Incredible to think of how brutal those times actually were. Great story telling as always Kev!!!
@@thehistorysquad So People think Anne went through alot. They have alot to learn mate. The Catholic tortured and killed Tens of thousands of peoole in medieval Europe for interpretating Christianity in a slightly different way. The Catholics also burnt people at the stake for trying to translate the Bible into English. Research the various torture devices that the Catholics invented and your eyes will be opened mate as to the horrors of Catholic Church. People have alot to learn when it comes to medieval history. You could teach them geezer.
Henry was a dreadful hypocrite. Imagine a man who misapplied scripture to try to get a divorce, routinely committed adultery, probably used his power to coerce women into sex actually placing himself as the religious head/conscience of a nation. I know of Anne's story. Her story is inspirational to anyone of faith and just women generally. Thank you for sharing this
@@colinslant Maybe, but as King of England he could do as he pleases, and nobody can do anything about it. And nobody would dare to tell him he was an arse.
Several years ago, there was an exhibition going around Europe which featured medieval instruments of torture. My teen kids and wanted to see it so I took them. Big mistake! It was one of the most horrible things I ever saw. The thought that human beings spent so much time, effort and imagination on instruments to hurt, maim and torture their fellow humans is mind boggling. It preyed in my mind for months and I devoutly wished I had never seen it.
We all have that shadow in us. This is what malice humans are capable of and we all have that potential. It’s balanced by the light in all of us and is seen in those who win over the inner shadow. The only way to actively avoid being the worst of humanity is to recognize that you CAN be the worst of humanity.
Gory stuff, I have a tendon injury in my leg at the moment and in agony so what that poor lady went through is unimaginable. Our ancestors really were callous butchers.
Don't disparage your ancestors. You don't know what they've done, not good to forsake the people who've struggled to get you to where you are. I'm proud of my ancestors, and I thank them for their sacrifices. I don't think they had any doings like this.
@@thehistorysquad on that note of horrendous tortures, could you clarify if Edward 1st men when in Scotland, flayed the Scottish lairds and members of their families and tacked their skins to the doors of their castles. It seems such a truly gruesome sickening thing to do to someone
Not just Henry viii but England as a whole, with its colonialism , enslaving and murdering thousands. Don't just blame a king blame the whole evil empire.
Her story is quite similar to Saint Apollonia the young martyr who refused to renounce her faith and so they broke all her teeth with rocks or pulled them out (depending on accounts) and threatened to rape and torture her and so she jumped into a fire pit. She was just a teenager. Apollonia is now the saint of dentistry worldwide.
I actually let this video sit for a couple of weeks, because I knew you would tell us more than mere lurid events, because I knew that you would humanize this very real person. It was still painful to watch, not merely because of the suffering inflicted on this woman, but because of the sheer injustice of it. May Anne Askew rest in peace. =-[.]-=
Horrifying, astonishing, ghastly. This account brought tears to my eyes. What is wrong with our species?! I admire your presentation, Kevin. Thank you for your quiet sincerity. I have just subscribed. Regards, Colin.
@@spankyjeffro5320 Up to a point, but what about the atrocities committed by atheist regimes? I'm looking at you Josef Stalin, Mao Tse Tung and others.
When I toured the White Tower, we ventured to the basement to see the displays. I’m not really a believer in ghosts, but I had to leave in a hurry. I could feel the pain in that space. It was incredible to me. Crushing overwhelming fear and pain.
I only can imagine in my wildest, most horrific nightmares the insurmountable pain and cruel suffering this woman endured 😢 I got a ruptured disk in my L5 and S1 region located in the vertebrae-lumbar region- caused spinal stenosis and my spinal cord was pinched causing me so much pain that I writhed, screamed and groaned in unforgettable pain I even pleaded for God to take me: I bet that courageous woman Askew suffered much, much more…. Rest in peace beautiful Anne ❤
Had a similar injury to you. Except apparently I broke my back 10yrs before (no idea how!). Anyway, 10yrs later I had two abscesses grow out of my broken spine, which pinched my nerves. I remember screaming in agony and wishing to die. It was like being electrocuted. I'd twist and collapse... Almost killed by doctors because they misdiagnosed me with sciatica - for three months! Now my lower 3 lumbar are fused and am in pain often... And they won't give me disability benefits. Bastards!
I remember her from watching "The Tudors." Such a gruesome and painful experience! I can't imagine the agony she went through in her last moments of life.
I've dislocated my elbow and my tendons stretched and tore slightly. It was the most painful thing I have ever experienced and I've had an operation where they didn't give me enough local anaesthetic before they started cutting. This poor woman. Unbelievable.
She was a very well educated woman, and she held her own - despite horrific conditions - while being questioned directly by Stephen Gardiner (shudder) who wanted to use Anne to get to and execute Queen Katherine Parr who was a Protestant. I wrote a paper on Askew years ago, and I loved her courage and poise in her testimony. Fortunately for Katherine H8 was too ill and died too soon for Gardiner’s vile fantasies to be carried out, and young Prince Edward was a thorough Protestant and wanted none of Gardiner’s vicious Catholic persecutions of Protestants.
Well, I can’t say I enjoyed learning the history of Anne Askew, it certainly is heartbreaking that she was so persecuted and tortured, but I am very grateful for the example she demonstrated in refusing to surrender her faith in God. Her courage is is most inspiring. May she rest In Heavenly Peace.
What a sad story of treatment of her. I cannot help but believe that people who carried out these tortures, could not know that even if they got the result they desired, that the information would have been given under duress, simply as a means to get the torture to stop. Anne had to have been a very brave and forthright woman. I have to wonder if her torturers would have withstood what she did had they undergone "interrogation".
I really enjoyed hearing Anne's story. I agree that it is one that should be told, as horrible as it was, we must learn from it and from history. May God bless you and keep you, Anne Askew.
I would like to mention that the very same religion, which tells women to be obedient to their husbands, and that only men can be priests et c. was in the very beginning of this case.
Wow, I remembered going through a museum and seeing the torture pieces back then but not the stories. Amazing what this lady went through thank you for sharing.
This man deserves every view he gets.. I just found one of his videos and I loved it. I was recommend this video while watching videos on concrete lmao
I am very proud of her for her unwillingness to name names and bravery in defending her faith. I appreciated learning about her from you. May she be resting in eternal peace.
There is also the case of Margaret Clitherow a citizen of York, and a Catholic. She had heard Mass in her house and concealed Priests, an offence for which the punishment was death. When she was charged, she refused to plead, since if the matter came to trial, her family could be tortured to make them give evidence. Despite being pregnant with her fourth child, she was crushed to death beneath a door which was slowly loaded with heavy weights. It is said she lasted 15 minutes before she died. This was in 1586. In 1929 she was made a Saint, one of the Forty Martyrs of the Reformation.
Another reason to not enter a plea was so that your property could not be seized. That's why Giles Corey in Salem refused to enter a plea during the witch trials, if he had said guilty or not guilty his property would have been taken from him, while dying without entering a plea means his heirs keep his property So, according to the custom of the time, he was pressed to attempt to extract a plea from him. Several days he lay under an enormous pile of weight until he died, but his family kept his property due to his refusal
Love your vast knowledge of history. I've been following for about 6 months now, and the medieval period has always intrigued me. Thanks for posting videos.
My daughter has stumbled across your topic inside and thought I should comment. My grandmother had original paintings of Anne & her husband, one of just anne & other paintings 2 children playing in a field, I was told it was Anne's children. The painter was French, another was Italian. When I was a young man, I would go on these trips with my grandmother. As she was moving these paintings from place to place. My grandmother would guard these paintings with her life. There was only a select few that was allowed to see the paintings Along With security and trust, obviously. My grandmother has since passed and these paintings remain in my custody Along with the rules of my grandmother. I have heard alot of stories of anne & her family. My grandmother joined the Royal navy at 17. Then after that, she worked for Queen Elizabeth. 2 years before my grandmother's passing. She received a letter from the Queen asking about her Well-being the letter was hand delivered & he waited for a response letter. Both passed just months apart. Thank you for telling the history.
If you read history books pre women's movement and pre political correctness, you would know that she was very well recognised, particularly for being the only woman tortured in the Tower of London. But contemporary historians try to infer that those tortured most were women so they cannot mention Anne Askew without it being clear that nearly all those tortured were men.
@@thehistorysquad your channel is absolutely my new favorite, my mother is a genealogist and has traced our ancestors back from William Brewster of the Mayflower all the way to the Plantagenets giving me a love and interest in British history and the Monarch, so thank you again from New Hampshire 😀
I can't say this story made my day but it is an incredible story of courage. Damn! The sadistic horror people are willing to others thru is frightening. If this isn't evil then what is? And it at least for me raises the hope that it has a counterpart somewhere in the univirse.
Another great one. Just a side note, ligaments attach bone to bone, tendons attach muscles to bone. Muscles support the joints and help prevent them from being damaged (damage to ligament is sprain). Straining of muscles/rupture of tendons would definitely increase the likelihood of joints being dislocated.
@@thehistorysquad in this case, based on the mechanism of injury, there’s a high likelihood that her shoulders were dislocated. Usually get a ligamentous tear of the labrum and possible associated biceps tendon tear. Either one of those could cause a popping sound.
And once her shoulders were dislocated further stretching would just have further damaged them as there's then no way to transfer the force to other joints. Her arms would just have eventually have been ripped off ( not unusual in industrial accidents, unfortunately). So it's hard to understand why she couldn't walk to the stake unless her restraints had damaged her ankles, say. It's also not the least bit credible that she didn't talk! EVERYONE talks under torture. Eventually . But what kind of a story of a brave martyr would it be if that was stated? And we only have her own accounts that she didn't ( and how did she write them with dislocated shoulders ....).
@@rackmasterh three levels of racking: 1st degree -both knees and elbows ripped apart, 2nd degree both shoulders and hips. The 3rd degree was separation of the spine and fatal...hence the grim saying of 'giving someone the 3rd degree'. Any survivor of racking was left permanently damaged and likely disabled.
@@brendanoneil3489 nah. Shoulders are first to go, then there's no way to transfer force to other joints. It's like breaking a chain, once the weakest link is gone, You can't break any others. As I said, In industrial accidents, arms are pulled off fairly often, but there's never damage to other joints ( some people survive, amazingly, if they get help before they bleed out). Anything else is just sadoporn fiction.
I became familiar with her when I watched “ The Tudors” mini-series and I found her to be the most impressive human being in the entire series ( but I know that’s not saying much .)

I’ve got a family member I tracked who was executed for high treason around 1477, very similar fashion to all of these but he was drawn and quartered. He was a Yorkist serving the Duke of Clarence (Edward IV’s brother). I can fill you in more on it if you’re interested!
Beautifully and transversely horrendously told. Subbed. I just made a comment on another channel on a upload in the same vein, the medieval lot had human torment down to a fine art. Poor woman and people in general that endured such horror. I admire how staunch this woman was. Unbelievable heart. My kind of person if only my coconspirators had a per cent of the heart she had I'd probably never have gone to prison in my wayward days. I digress.
Sometimes I would agree with you, but in this case they knew it wasn't right even back then, and that is why they had to do it illegally. Although I would say even if it had been legally it would be immoral.
Thanks for telling this story, I never heard of her before. How gruesome, mankind is worse than any animal! Not only torturing our own kind but burning them alive. The Lady was incredibly brave to withstand this, most men would have told the interrogators what ever they wanted to hear.
I am amazed at this woman's determination, grit, gracefulness and resiliency - shown in the true human spirit. There are a lot of very brave and determined souls that came out of Great Britain during the Renaissance period,Anne Askew being one of them.
