Did you know that Cecil B. DeMille insisted on Anne Baxter being cast in The Ten Commandments as Queen Nefertari and that the actress felt that she wasn’t right for the part? By the time Anne Baxter was cast as Queen Nefertari in The Ten Commandments, the actress had already been working in the entertainment industry for over two decades. Anne got her start on the stage before an unfortunate incident that occurred while she was acting alongside Katharine Hepburn inspired her to head out to Hollywood. Katharine thought that Anne wasn’t a good enough actress for the stage, so Anne tried films instead.

Once in Hollywood, it didn’t take very long for Anne to be signed with a studio. The actress signed her first studio contract at the age of only 16. Anne was signed with 20th Century Fox, the studio wasn’t afraid to lend her out to other production companies. Anne made her big-screen debut with her fourth-billed part in 1940’s 20 Mule Team. Following this debut appearance, Anne could be seen in several other pictures over the next few years before finally becoming a breakout star during the mid-1940s. During the days of World War II, Anne claimed that she received almost as many fan letters from soldiers as Betty Grable did.
In 1946, Anne Baxter appeared in the film The Razor’s Edge. Thanks to her performance in the film, the actress won an Academy Award. Finally, Anne Baxter was as critically acclaimed as she was commercially successful. Anne entered into the 1950s with a bang thanks to her titular performance in the film All About Eve, though it would be her performance in Cecil B. DeMille’s 1956 biblical epic The Ten Commandments that would become the most iconic of her career. This comes in spite of the fact that Anne felt her turn in The Razor’s Edge was the most dramatically successful of her many performances. Join Facts Verse as we explore how Anne Baxter bared all for The Ten Commandments.

We bought our house from Anne Baxter back in the 1970's while I was entering High-School in Pacific Palisades California. I was always a big fan of the Ten Commandments and had an early crush on this beautiful actress from Hollywood's Golden age. She had impeccable tastes with a sunken living-room and a 16 foot built in couch. Her avocado tree was over 40 feet tall with lots of fruit and good climbing!

She was truly outstanding,as you say.Whever I think of TTC,I think of her as Nefertari - she owned the role, and while there were so many other great performances - hers stood out. Always felt she was a superb actress, but I think she will first and foremost,be remembered for this role. She did some other great work - "The Blue Gardenia",'All About Eve' and an underrated gem , "Chase A Crooked Shadow". I have them all in my collection, ofc:))

Anne Baxter may not have looked the part of an Egyptian queen, but she was an Egyptian queen in The Ten Commandments. She captured the spirit of the charactcter so well. Even though I've heard others describe her acting in The Ten Commandments as overly dramatic, I considered her acting passionate and full of genuine emotion. Nobody else could have done a better job in my opinion.

In New York, the Ten commandments was a movie that was played every year on tv around Easter time when I was growing up. Every year, I looked forward to watching the movie, with my family, on tv. My favorite role that Ann Baxter played was the role of Olga and her band of Besarovian Cossacks opposite Egghead in the 1960s show Batman. The role of Egghead was played by Vincent Price. Who knew she had great comedic chops, as well? 👍👏💯🍷

At 2:41 the photograph is of Eleanor Parker..... Not Anne Baxter. Though that photo of Eleanor Parker is on the Anne Baxter Wikipedia page. (I'm a huge fan of Eleanor Parker). And I think Anne Baxter was a very good actress in most of her films. The one thing that is very noticeable in The Ten Commandments is not her movie acting, but her stage acting. When Nefretiri meets Moses and he says he is bound to a shepherd girl. Instead of facing him, her back is to him a minute later, and she faces the camera. Whether they didn't put in another camera for the scene or the director wanted her to look away from Moses. Or she chose to keep her face always towards the one camera. It gave the scene a staged look, not a natural movie scene. DeMille had a way of filming that way, so it may have been his style. The lines were well written and the movie a huge success. One of my favorite movies. But many scenes seemed staged and not natural.

Thank you for this filmographical review of the gorgeous, talented Anne Baxter! I wasn't aware of the roles she'd played in classic movies prior to The Ten Commandments. Seeing her every year on TV as Nefertiti was always a treat because, in spite of the melodramatic style of the film, she brought a sensuality to that role that you couldn't deny. Her beauty and teasing SEXuality were enthralling to the normal American male.

Ann Baxter was one of my all times favorites. I saw the Ten Commandments in the 1950's ..I now have it on Blu-ray ..it is said that the 4K version is even better. I had read the studio Paramount wanted Audrey Hepburn for the part, but Cecil B DeMille felt her figure was to thin for the role & I agree. .for Ann Baxter had a more voluptuous figure along, with her deep smoky voice that could melt any man ..was perfect for Queen Nefertari..As far as her feeling she did not look Egyptian well no one in the cast really looked like a ancient Egyptian ..it was a all white cast ..so to bring that up was mute.. I noticed her nipples the very 1st time I saw the film as a young teen; blame it on my raging hormones of a male LOL

The Ten Commandments is one of my favorite of the biblical epics of the 50's. In addition to the grandeur of the sets and thousands of extras, the cast was impeccable. As gorgeous as Baxter is, it was Ivonne de Carlo the one who I was smitten by. I watched a heavily damaged copy of the movie at the Cinematheque Archives in Havana when I was a teenager. I've seen old pre Castro magazines with advertisements for all those epics, but after 1959 none were ever shown in theaters or TV. Even more egregious was the abandonment and carelessness of which these magnificent films were treated. Fortunately for a few, the storing facilities were state of the art and, though second and third printing reels showed fading damage, The Ten Commandments damage consisted of scratches, missing sound and film portions, there were at least 3 reels that were in almost mint condition. It was also a direct strike from negative thus the colors were beautiful. Even with all the modern digital technology and such, nothing beats seeing a projection against a big white screen by the light resulting from the 2 carbon sticks. By the way, the actress on the 2:40 mark is Elinor Parker, not Baxter. Cheers!

The original name of her character was Nefer-titi. Pretty apt but they had to change it. Audrey Hepburn was considered for that role but it seemed she didn't quite fill out the costumes too well.

I don’t know if you’re being tongue-in-cheek, but Nefertari (Nefretiri in the movie) was really the name of Rameses the Great’s wife. The producers couldn’t and wouldn’t have used Nefertiti who was the wife of Akhenaten.

Yes, it surely was an amazing one. I still remember that I had gone 4 times to this small movie hall in the seventies within a week just before my pre-university exams. To me she acted superbly and I was particularly totally taken aback with the casting of this film. Historical pictures always made a great impact on me and I never missed one. The last was "Troy".

This was a really well done and interesting bio pic of a great star. I was nine years old when I saw the Ten Commandments and I can say without contradiction that Ms. Baxter’s costumes were more than a nine year old boy could bare (pun intended). I would love to know the real reason for Katherine Hepburn’s dislike. Perhaps another Fact Verse on that subject would be appropriate.

I saw "The Ten Commandments" in 1956 at age 10 & was overwhelmed with the majesty of the film! The gorgeous color, acting performances, 'trick photography",i.e. parting of the Red Sea, turning water into blood, etc., was 'mind blowing', for the time! I liked Anne Baxter, but also thought that she was not right for the part & somewhat overacted R.I.P. & Love, Anne!

I never really thought about this Woman's, persona before this short tribute and clip about Her. Myself it was" The Ten Commandments" that I first saw her in. I may of been Six or Seven at the time. I do recall Her as Nefitteri, in that Movie? The evil Pharaohs Wife. Thinking back now? She nailed that character. After that, I always would remember Her for those scene's. I guess it was an imprint on my conception of Her, after that. Her later roles were also Great? But when I found out about Her age? I was probably a Teenager then? So I guess I payed attention too Her like it was My Mother on the TV, or Film Screen, I was watching. By your tribute, they were almost the same age. In retrospect She was very Bueatiful, in a Girl nextdoor, type of way. She had the build of a petite though full figured Bombshell. Also as I mentioned it was like seeing my Mom? Back in those "Days"? That was considered A Big fat "NO GDW"🙄🙄🤯🤯😱😱 Oh "Shit Boy ", clear that Filthy mind right Now. Do you realize what I'm telling you "all"? In a household of 3-5 people? With those 3 being My Mother, n Two Older Sister's!! Life was Kinda, Treacherous if You know what I'm getting at? Oh well that's enough from Me. Great Fact's, Verses, episode! It was very fulfilling, n insightful for me. Thanks Very Much. Wyoming, Robert, 🇨🇦🇺🇸🇨🇦🇺🇸🇨🇦🇺🇸👍👍👀👀🤔🤔🙄🤯😱🙏🙏🙏🙏

Her performance in THE RAZOR’S EDGE is by far the best in the film. Simply astoundingly good. Head and shoulder’s above the other actors - although Clifton Webb was magnificent as Elliot Templeton, and John Payne solid as the stolid husband, whereas Tyrone Power was pretty much awful. Tierney of course was hired for her stunning good looks.

Not that it bothers me in the least but, my take is that Katherine saw Ann as a goody-two-shoes -- both in front of the camera and in real life. And, for whatever psychological reason, THAT was what "rubbed her the wrong way" about Ann. Maybe she reminded Katherine of a girl back in her school days who dripped with saccharin and who also dripped with personality and with friends?
