Another SIX the Musical and Tudors mashup! This one's on Anne of Cleves, who was one heck of a woman. Got her own castle, survived all the wives, and didn't have to stay married to Henry. I'd say that's a win!
Anne of Cleves just seemed to be that person everyone got along with. Even Mary, who hated protestants, loved her. She was even at Mary's coronation as queen.
What I couldn't stand about the show is that they tried to gaslight the audience into believing that their Anne of Cleves was ugly. I know the historical Anne of Cleves was no great beauty, but in the show she was beautiful and fierce! The actress is lovely and fabulous! And she had way more body than poor little Katherine Howard, who looked like a wisp of air would blow her away. Every time Henry complained about her looks, I was like "Bitch, where?!"
@@alwaysgrowing Lol, she was too much woman for him and his fragile ego couldn't take it. Maybe that's why he preferred petite women; they gave him an added sense of superiority and control that he couldn't find in Anne of Cleves
There isn't really evidence that suggests the real anne was ugly. Its more of a case that Henry didn't like that she thought he was ugly. By the time they were married Henry was middle aged, morbidly obese and smelled horrible thanks to his ulcers. Think Donald Trump.
Yeah it was typical of a foreign wife, especially a queen, to assume an english version of her name when she moved there. I like referring to her as Anna sometimes to distinguish her from Anne Boleyn. 🙂
i only refer to her as Anne of Cleves because it’s disrespectful to say Anna of cleves and ik i would accidentally say anna of cleves or Anne von klee (which is also disrespectful) LMAOO IM DUMB
@@marblebloc1943 They're not. They're describing what he looked like in actual history, which is not what the show portrayed. I don't think the comments above yours are saying fat=disgusting (which it obviously doesn't), I think they're saying that he was supposed to be older, fatter, and more disgusting looking - they're probably referring to the disgusting sores on his leg(s).
The funny thing is that I could totally see Joss Stone (Anne of C in the Tudors)- who is an AMAZING SINGER in her own right singing this part very well. She has the voice for it.
Apparently cleves was “tricked” by henery befor they were supposed to meet he dressed like a peasant and tried to trick her or something and she got scared and yelled at him and that’s why he claimed “she was ugly”
Henry dressed up and went gallivanting with his men all of the time. They were games of courtly love that everyone in England knew about. Anne had no idea and thought a stranger was making a move
@@--Tia-- Exactly, the irony of paranoid Henry not getting that his future wife was loyal, (not one his traits though). Imagine his Narcissistic wound when she didn't swoon over him without his status. Quite revealing, that he would set himself up for a double bind and then have a potential "potency issue" (sexual disgust) over the shock of his "rejection" of his true self.
Anne of Cleves had the best time out of all the wives. Catherine of Aragon was divorced and she couldn’t see her daughter, Mary. Anne Boleyn was beheaded when Elizabeth was young. Jane Seymour died and she didn’t meet her child. Catherine Howard was beheaded of something she probably didn’t do (same with Anne Boleyn). Catherine Parr has to stay with that old man at the end of his life. She also became a widow. Anne didn’t have any kids, wasn’t beheaded but she was divorced after a bit of marriage.
She was always my fave! So my choices are to insist on our marriage and get killed or divorce and walk out with a fortune and your favor? Also, i don't have to marry again if I don't want to? Where do i sign my dear brother? 🤩
the musical is literally about how stupid it is to try to compare them, like, you shouldn't say `` she had a better time '' like she didn't go through pain and trauma too wtf
Anna of Cleves seemed like such a wonderful person she was so nice to his daughters 🥺 Henry should’ve had her stick around for a while longer he could’ve learned a thing for two from her 😂
Which is always something that amazes me. Mary is infamous for being anti-anything but Catholic, yet was good friends with Anne of Cleves, a German Protestant. I think that's super incredible and shows an awesome side to both these ladies!
I love how Anne of Cleves was such an indipendent woman. Women were powerless back then, she had so much confidence tbh. I always believed German women are indipendent and powerful, and I was right.
I love all these comments about her beauty, (although they aren't very historically accurate) but what we should be talking about their relationship. The show didn't mention that they were like brother and sister after the divorce. They were portrayed as much more hostile towards each other when in reality they regularly sent letters as a sister or companion or advisor and kept in touch until he died.
Tbh he didn't hate her cause she was ugly, in fact she was extremely beautiful but he snuck into her room and tried to kiss her she didn't know how he looked so she pushed him away and then he said that he didn't like her for the reason of her being ugly
Out of the six wives Anne of Cleves is the one whose video I keep replaying over and over again. I say she got the better end of the divorce: got a place of her own and was her own boss.
They became really good friends actually (allegedly) and he called her his sister. She was important in court for a lot of her life until some revolution drama later on (but she was reinstated). She became rich as hell and lived the best life out of all of them so really he did her a favor divorcing her lol
Henry treated her really well after their divorce, mainly because she cooperated with what he wanted. He gave her Anne Boleyn's old castle and continued to pay her a handsome allowance. And yes, she was nicknamed the king's beloved sister. She outlived all the other wives. She's awesome.
Well here's the thing. She was actually beautiful in real life according to her culture. But with Henry she wasn't because most of his queens were english and they have different beauty standards.
@@ethanant8325 I think there are accounts saying she was also beautiful according to English standards. He just didn’t like her because she rejected him when he kissed her without her knowing anything about him or who he was and believing him to be a random stranger.
Funny thing is the actress who plays Anne of Cleaves in the Tudors is actually a famous singer, one of these days, she might reprise her role of Anne, but for Six if asked.
I read that, by the time of his marriage to Anna, his leg ulcers were constantly oozing and smelled HORRIBLE. No doubt, this put Anna "off". As opposed to her being "smelly" (as Henry supposedly said) it was probably he who smelled worse. No doubt, all these smells helped contribute to their mutual aversion. Joss Stone is perfect for this role, combining warmth and curiosity (not to mention charming dimples) along with a clearly stony expression when Henry comes on to her. I love this video. Did she really own that palace??
It always made me curious as to why he offered her so much to get divorced. He didn't give any of the other so much of a chance. He divorced her based on the fact that she was already betrothed to someone else.
I think he, for once, didn't see it as her fault and wanted to make a clean cut of it all. Katherine Howard had a similar offer if she'd agreed she'd been previously betrothed, but she refused, ending in her execution. I think if Henry could find a simpler solution, he would, but in some cases, he felt like execution was the only solution. Luckily for Anne of Cleves, this was not the case.
Anne of Cleves may be or probably must be soaked in love for king Henry 8 because she did not remarry though she was young, rich and king permitted her. It was one sided love.
Kathryn Howard and Anne of Cleves are like besties ❤❤ And I do appreciate that Anne of Cleves made Mary and Elizabeth feel like they had someone to talk too Not me looking at the date of Anne of Cleves birthday it’s June 28th 😭😭and we are in the middle of July
well actually anne saved herself from things henry wouldve done to her if she stayed as we all know what other queens went through even if it was their or it wasnt their fault
What a hypocrisy. A woman who is married to a man by law,and religiously how can she became his sister after marriage annulled? Though the marriage was never consumeated according to records but who knows the truth. He did with her (if not also100percent). According to her grave inscriptions she is still Henry's wife(not sister) and Queen too. She probably had cancer and had very good relationships with stepchildren
